Sliding the last of her sweaters onto a hanger, Tara McCall let out a contented sigh. “There we go…” the redhead mused, surveying the rest of the clean and now folded clothes on her bed with a smile and grabbing everything already on a hanger before making her way to her dorm room’s closet.

The laundry was the last thing she’d needed to finish before JoBeth got back for homework, and once it was out of the way, there wouldn’t be anything stopping them from just hang out and finding something to do until it was time to get ready to go to the party over at Amy’s later that evening.

Walking back over to the bed, Tara sat back down on it and leaned back on her hands, taking a moment in the peace and quiet to relax. Last night, she’d been stuck in her bi-weekly chemistry lab pretty late when she’d gotten a text from JoBeth saying that she’d gone over to Amy’s, something that was far from unheard of lately. While Tara did miss having her around, she certainly couldn’t blame JoBeth for wanting to be around her girlfriend. Amy was really nice, and despite how she’d expected the blossoming relationship to be a distraction, Tara had been impressed to see JoBeth’s grades actually improve thanks to Amy’s caring vigilance and encouragement, helping her push past the academic insecurity that had caused JoBeth to give up on a few papers in the past.

Since they’d started seeing each other, JoBeth had spent more than a few weekend nights over at Amy’s, and Amy had snuck into the dorms to hang out with them just as often for movies and board games that had been a lot of fun, so far as Tara was concerned. It had been at the most recent of those game nights that Amy had mentioned the party tonight, and that she and JoBeth wanted her to come. Amy had described it as a simple gathering of their friends for food, games and maybe a movie, and since they counted her as a friend, they hoped she’d join them.

Nice as it sounded, Tara hated imposing on anyone, as JoBeth had found out pretty quickly after they’d first met. For as long as she could remember, she’d always felt a little awkward and uncomfortable in unfamiliar places. If she wasn’t sure she was wanted or if she didn’t know the hosts well, Tara couldn’t help feeling like she shouldn’t be there, but having her best friend in tow had been helping with that lately, and this time, both JoBeth and Amy would be there, and they had insisted repeatedly that she would more than welcome at this party.

With a small smile spreading across her features, Tara remembered how it had taken the determined JoBeth less than a day to talk her into it, pointing out that she’d have two people there that would be more than happy to talk to her at any time at the very least, and a bunch more cool, friendly people to boot. She’d also implied that she was going to be introduced to someone there, and that particular mystery alone was proving to be nearly enough to get her to go.

She’d exhausted every way she could think of to get JoBeth to tell her more than that, but despite her insistence, Tara hadn’t been able to get anything else identity-related out of her so far. Usually JoBeth was pretty easy to convince to let go of details, but this time she wasn’t giving more than a knowing smile and it had her curiosity in high gear.

Trying not to sink into a recursive loop of wondering what all of Amy and JoBeth’s little smirks and chuckles that week meant, Tara was at least looking forward to meeting Amy’s best friend that JoBeth kept talking about. From what she’d heard and even from the few times she’d overheard her on the phone, Tara thought that Lauren sounded really nice.

Smiling to herself, Tara let out a small sigh and turned her attention to the rest of the folded clothes on the bed beside her. Grabbing the small pile of socks, she hopped up off the bed and walked over to the dresser to put them away. She had to admit that JoBeth’s energy and enthusiasm as she’d tried to convince her to come along had been amusing and in the end, Tara decided it was pointless to resist the inevitable. After entertaining the thought that the two of them would make her come along if she didn’t agree to on her own, Tara figured that it would be easier just to tag along, even if the alternative sounded more funny than terrible.

Hanging out with JoBeth and Amy had never once been boring or lonely and neither of them had ever made her feel like a third wheel. They were two of her best friends, and Tara liked when they were around. Tucking the last of the clothes back in their drawers, she thought that if those two had found someone they wanted her to meet, she wouldn’t turn the opportunity down or walk away from the chance to find something that might be as nice as what Amy and JoBeth had found in each other.

Sliding the dresser drawers closed, Tara grabbed the pairs of pants off the bed and folded them over again. Tucking them up on their shelf above her hanging clothes, she was finally finished putting things away, outside of her favorite sweater and the cute pair of jeans put over on the futon to wear for the party later. Getting ready for that could wait, as right now, she was perfectly happy to stay comfortable in her sweatshirt and pajama pants and just enjoy the start of the day.

Grabbing her backpack from where it was propped up by the foot of her bed, Tara sat down at her desk. Fishing out the math assignment she planned on finishing up with JoBeth later, Tara gave it a quick glance-over before the sound of JoBeth’s door opening and closing pulled her attention away. Within seconds, Tara heard the bathroom door open up and a smile found its way to her lips as JoBeth poked her head through the doorway.

“Tara!” JoBeth said, donning a bright grin and coming fully into the room.

As JoBeth crossed the room to wrap her up in a hug, Tara couldn’t help a small chuckle as she noticed that over her own pair of pajama pants, JoBeth had managed to borrow one of Amy’s sweatshirts for the day once again. Returning the hug, Tara felt like the room had gotten a little warmer now that familiar and welcome company was around. “Hey, Jo,” Tara said, letting JoBeth out of the hug and letting her sit down on the foot of her bed. “How are you?”

“Good,” JoBeth started, kicking her legs gently over the side of Tara’s bed. “Really good. How about you? Chem-lab go okay last night?” she asked.

Nodding, Tara turned to sit side-saddle in the chair and face JoBeth. “Yup,” Tara said, leaning against the back of the chair. “It was fine. I mean, it ran long, but at least we got everything done before the lab closed, unlike a few other groups!”

“Awesome!” JoBeth said cheerfully. “No weekend lab time for you then,” she added with a pleased smile, having heard from Tara about just how crazy hard some of the labs had gotten lately, and glad that her friend was still kicking ass with it.

“Nope! What about you though?” Tara asked in return, her curiosity about what she and Amy had gotten up to last night becoming too hard to resist. “Everything go well last night?” she added with a smirk, already knowing what JoBeth’s answer would be.

While it was certainly naughty and it was definitely something that she would’ve thought strange just a few weeks ago, Tara loved hearing JoBeth’s stories about all the different toys and gear that Amy had introduced her to, her reactions to them, and the many surprisingly funny things that resulted. JoBeth had even showed her some of the pictures Amy had taken recently, and Tara couldn’t deny that they got her heart beating a little faster with curiosity and something close to excitement to imagine what it might be like to be in them herself, and what it would feel like to be both powerful and helpless and sexy, held so completely by someone that loved and wanted her.

The few times that Tara had spent time around the two using some of their gear, where JoBeth nestled into Amy’s arms while bound up in the dorm rooms during a movie, she’d thought it was clear that while Amy was physically in charge of whatever happened to JoBeth, JoBeth still held an alluring and playful control over Amy as the object of her love and desire, no matter how restrained she was. It was sweet and kind of cute to see the push and pull between the two, where the bonds had been a gateway to a deeper connection between them, one of trust, desire and love that seemed wonderful and it only made Tara more curious about what it would be like to feel that way with someone herself.

JoBeth caught the rosy blush surfacing on Tara’s cheeks and she knew just what Tara was thinking of. Quiet and innocent as she looked, she knew that Tara had just as much of a naughty imagination as she did and it was adorable. “Oh yeah,” JoBeth said, a corner of her lips turning up in smirk. “All kinds of good…” she chuckled.

She knew from both talking to her and seeing some of her work that Lauren was just as into bondage as Amy was. JoBeth was glad to see that Tara was more than a little curious about and interested in the subject. It would be just one more thing on the list that she would have in common with Lauren, if they hit it off, even if it took a while for it to come up.

“But we can talk about that later,” JoBeth said, a slightly teasing ring in her tone as Tara gave her a pout. She was starting to get used to resisting Tara’s looks, but JoBeth knew she wouldn’t be able to hold out against the inevitable interrogation for too long. “We’ve got homework to finish up first, right?” she asked, bringing up the one thing that would keep her at bay, if only to get rid of any remaining excuse not to talk details.

A resigned sigh escaped her lips and Tara nodded, consenting to wait until after work was done before getting JoBeth to spill about anything new or fun that happened last night, despite the insistent knot of curiosity bundled up inside her. “Alright,” Tara started, shaking off some of the dirtier thoughts that had jumped to mind. Clearing her throat gently, Tara couldn’t help a small, slightly embarrassed chuckle. Out of anyone, she was okay with JoBeth knowing that those kinkier kinds of thoughts got her flustered. “It’s just the last math worksheet left, right?” she asked, glad for the change in subject.

“Yup,” JoBeth agreed. “That’s all I had,” she said with a smile, running through her own mental to-do list. “I did the reading for history last night while I was waiting for Amy to pick me up,” she added a moment later, getting another nod from her best friend.

Tara had finished that reading herself before going to bed, making it one thing off their collective list. “Nice,” she said with a smile. “This shouldn’t take long at all then.”

“Nope!” JoBeth seconded. “There’ll be plenty of time to get ready for later,” she continued, the cheerful energy and anticipation in her voice drawing a laugh out of Tara.

“Yep,” Tara said, stealing a glance over at the clock. “What time is Amy coming by?”

“Around 4:30ish,” JoBeth answered. “We’ll swing by a grocery store on the way there, too,” she continued relaying the plan that she, Amy and Lauren had decided on just a little while ago. “There are still a few things we need to pick up.”

“Sounds good to me,” Tara said, pausing to think back to what JoBeth had been telling her about the party a few nights ago. “You said we’re ordering pizza for dinner too, right?”

Nodding, JoBeth smiled. “Yup, from Romano’s.”

Tara’s brow rose at the confirmation, now even more interested in this party than before. “Ooh, they’re good…” she mused.

Romano’s had become their local pizzeria of choice after sampling the many that delivered to the dorms, and JoBeth had guessed that she wouldn’t get any arguments from Tara about that particular detail of the party. “Yup, and Amy’s making her antipasto salad for us…” JoBeth added. “Trust me; you’re going to love it.”

While she’d only had breakfast a few hours ago, Tara could almost taste the pizza already and she’d heard nothing but rave reviews about Amy’s antipasto from JoBeth over the last few weeks. “Sounds great!” she said with a grin, very much looking forward to it all as her thoughts turned to what might be worth snacking on after, depending on how late the evening might go. “Any chance we can pick up some vanilla wafers at the store too?” she asked, doubting anyone would have much of a problem with her bringing them along before JoBeth chuckled.

“We’ve already got ‘em for you,” JoBeth said, bringing an amused grin to Tara’s lips. They were the redhead’s favorite snack food and they were never without them in the dorms. JoBeth had made sure to put them on the top of the shopping list as yet another way she hoped to help Tara feel at ease and welcome at the party.

“Thanks,” Tara laughed, feeling more than a little grateful that JoBeth knew her so well.

“Of course,” JoBeth said with a smile, patting Tara’s knee. “Thought you might want some, just in case,” she added with a chuckle.

“Alright, then 4:30 it is,” Tara said, turning around in the chair to face her desk, figuring that JoBeth would be perfectly happy setting up in her usual homework-doing position spread out on the bed beside her. “Want to get started?” Tara asked, tapping her finger on the stapled sheets of paper.

“Sure,” JoBeth said, hopping up off the bed. “Let me go grab my stuff,” she added, making her way back into her room, encouraged to hear Tara sounding like she was looking forward to the party and ready to kill the time they’d have to wait until it would start.

Opening her messenger bag that had served as last night’s over-night bag with Amy, JoBeth took out her laundry and tossed it into the hamper. “Let’s see here…” she said to herself, taking the math folder, her calculator and a pencil out of the bag. Leaving it in its usual spot near her dresser, JoBeth headed back through the connecting bathroom.

“If we finish in time, I was going to head down to the gym for a while,” JoBeth said as she came back into Tara’s room to see that Tara had already gotten the worksheet out herself. “No reason we can’t get an hour in there before getting ready, if you want to come with,” she added, plopping down on Tara’s bed while her friend watched her with a smile.

“Sure,” Tara replied cheerfully, confident that they would have plenty of time and she was always glad to have the company down in the dorm’s windowless gym. She liked using the treadmills, especially now that it was cold outside, and having JoBeth around to talk to in the echo-prone basement made it a lot less lonely and a lot less likely that she’d have to put up with any other awkward conversations or attempted flirting. “We’ve only got, what, five problems here?”

“Yup,” JoBeth said, leaning back against Tara’s body pillow. “Shouldn’t take us too long,” she added a moment later. “The last assignment didn’t, and this is the same section.”

“Yeah, it was kind of easy, wasn’t it?” Tara agreed. They’d managed to get lucky and have a TA running the section that was able to communicate the material and make it understandable, and it had proven to be a big help both for her and for JoBeth. “I’m not complaining though. I’ve got enough to worry about in chemistry to need to re-learn calculus!”

“Ugh, don’t even say that word around me…” JoBeth said with a shudder. “Worst high school class ever…”

“You liked it that much, huh?” Tara asked through a teasing laugh.

A wry smirk found its way to her lips and JoBeth rested her head back against the top of the pillow. “If ‘wanting to throw things at the teacher’ constitutes liking it, then sure…” she said, getting another laugh out of Tara. “Calculus with Doctor Martin...” JoBeth trailed off, thinking back to her least-favorite senior year class. “That guy was a goofball, too, Tara. You should’ve seen him.”

An eyebrow perking up, Tara liked hearing about JoBeth’s high school years and all the amusing things she’d gotten up to before she knew her. “Oh?” Tara asked leadingly. “What do you mean?”

“Well, he must’ve been about two hundred and fifty pounds,” JoBeth started. “And he always wore a sweater vest, no matter how hot it was,” she continued with a chuckle, having been mystified as to why he never took a day off from it more than once.

“Oh, geez,” Tara chuckled. “I had a few teachers like that too…”

“Ridiculous, right?” JoBeth asked, sharing a laugh with Tara. “It’d be ninety degrees outside in the spring and he still had one on!”

The class sounded like it had its hilarious moments at least, and Tara could only shake her head. “Seems like a smooth guy. I hope he could at least teach a little,” she said, already wondering just what he must’ve looked like on those worst days.

“More like impossible,” JoBeth laughed. “I had to teach myself the material, ‘cause the sweater vests were only the start. Whenever he wrote, he always got so close to the chalkboard that his stomach would wipe against it!” she continued, coming to one of her and her friends’ favorite reasons to laugh on their way out of the room. “By the end of class, we might have our notes down and he’d have this giant white smudge on his shirt!”

“Wow,” Tara said, sharing a laugh with JoBeth. “Maybe that’s why he wore it – he wanted to keep it all secret!” she posited.

“That’s the thing!” JoBeth exclaimed. “He never seemed to notice! It was great when he’d go looking for something he’d just written and it was gone!” she explained with a laugh as Tara did the same, shaking her head. “At least it was something funny to look at in class, because the only thing I learned in there was that I never wanted to study calculus again!”

Nodding, Tara couldn’t blame JoBeth. She was okay with the subject, but it was far from her favorite and she only cared for it as long as it helped in her other classes. “No wonder you’re not a math major,” Tara said with a smile, getting a nod out of JoBeth in response.

“You’ve got that right,” JoBeth said, letting out a deep, relaxing sigh. “If I can keep my 3.5, this’ll be the last math class I ever take…” she trailed off with a smile. “When I walk out of that final, I’ll never care about what ‘x’ equals ever again!” JoBeth said, breaking into a smirk and looking over at Tara, who was much better at this than she was. “I’ll leave those questions to you!”

“Deal,” Tara said with a chuckle. “And if I make a big discovery, I’ll come find you to report about it,” she added, getting another laugh out of JoBeth.

“Deal,” JoBeth echoed, reaching over to playfully shake Tara’s hand. “But I think that’s enough goofy high school stories…”

“But I like goofy high school stories,” Tara said in mock protest.

“I know,” JoBeth replied, smiling over at the redhead as she propped her math folder up against her knees. “But we’ve got lunch and the gym for those!”

Nodding, Tara conceded JoBeth’s point. “That’s true,” she said with a smile.

“And after that, getting ready and Amy’ll be here,” JoBeth mused, already thinking about what she would need to pack for tonight, and when she might be able to grab that change of clothes for Tara along with her toothbrush, just in case.

“Ahh, so that’s why you want to focus,” Tara teased, earning a playful flash of JoBeth’s tongue in retort. “Alright, six hours left?” Tara asked rhetorically. “I think we got this,” she finished with a smirk and JoBeth chirped her agreement. Like JoBeth had said, the questions on this weekend’s assignment weren’t terribly hard and between them, she was confident that they’d figure them out without any trouble. “Just as long as you tell me about last night later…” Tara added with a suggestive smirk.

JoBeth laughed, feeling her cheeks warming slightly with a blush. “Maybe,” she allowed, having no intention to not talk to Tara. “But not in public,” JoBeth added after a moment, breaking into a bright grin of her own.

“It was that much fun, huh?” Tara asked, watching JoBeth’s blush grow a few shades darker.

“More,” JoBeth replied, biting her lower lip and letting out a small chuckle. Resting her head back against the pillow for a moment, she let out a longing sigh. “I miss her already…” she trailed off with a dreamy smile, looking over at Tara. “She’s got a comfy bed.”

Chuckling with JoBeth and still wearing her playful smirk, Tara could only imagine just how true that sentiment was. “That and you don’t mind when she ties you up in it either,” she teased, getting a laugh out of JoBeth.

“Not at all,” JoBeth confessed, agreeing with Tara’s observation whole-heartedly. “But waking up and cuddling with her is so much better,” she added with a sweet, happy smile as the fond memories of Amy’s arms wrapped around her just this morning bubbled back to the surface.

“Aww, Jo…” Tara cooed, trailing off into a chuckle. “You two are too cute together, you know that?” she asked, glad to see her best friend this happy.

“I can’t help it,” JoBeth said simply. “I like her a lot, Tar…”

A sweet smile danced across her lips and Tara nodded. “I know,” she said, glad that the target of JoBeth’s affection was someone as nice and fun as Amy. “And for what it’s worth, I think she likes you just as much, Jo.”

Wrapped up in the wonderful feelings that Amy incited in her, JoBeth couldn’t wait to be back together with her again later that night. “I think so too,” JoBeth said with a happy smile sparkling in her eyes, glad that Tara saw it in Amy as well. “And who knows?” she started, fixing Tara with a suggestive and caring smile. “Maybe later, you’ll find someone too…”

Tara laughed, trying to imagine what it would be like to find someone that she’d fall for that fast. She wouldn’t say she was against the idea, as it did sound more than a little fun and appealing, no matter how unlikely it seemed. “Well, we’ll see…” Tara said with a demure smile, looking forward to at least meeting Lauren later and wondering just who she was supposed to be introduced to at this party. “But homework first!” she proclaimed, patting the page of homework on the desk and opening the math book beside her.

“Yes!” JoBeth agreed with a nod, her ponytails gently shaking behind her. “Alright, homework… What page were we on again?” she asked.

“Uhmm…” Tara said, glancing over at the page she’d bookmarked in class. “Page two ninety-three,” she answered, meeting JoBeth’s smile, ready to dive in and get this assignment finished.

Flipping through the pages of her textbook to the one Tara specified, JoBeth felt ready to focus up and get this assignment out of the way. “Thanks,” she said, looking back to the worksheet. “Okay, first question…” JoBeth started and within a few minutes, the two of them had the answer and were well on their way into the next one.

Soon, they’d hit the gym, and after that, it would be time for lunch. With the rest of the afternoon ahead, she and Tara could just relaxed, play a game or two and get ready before Amy arrived, starting off what JoBeth knew would be a fun night ahead.
