Chapter Three

*Chapter Three*

“Lisette and Jo are partners,” Mrs. Nite said.

I perked up and grinned. Lisette smiled at me and gathered up her things. When Mrs. Nite let us work on our projects, she came over to my desk and sat across from me.

“Our character is Jane, right?” I asked her.

She nodded. “Yes.”

“What are your thoughts on her?” I asked curiously.

“I like her. She’s a very brave girl,” Lisette said with a smile.

I nodded. “So, how do you want to do the poster?”

“Hmm. Well, I was thinking that we could draw Jane and then write her personality traits and some quotes that prove it around her,” she told me.

I smiled. “Great idea. Do you want me to draw her?”

She shrugged. “If you want. You’re a better artist than me anyway. I’ll look up the quotes and write her traits down.”

I nodded and went to work. Lisette worked quietly, occasionally asking questions. We finished with twenty minutes left to spare. We turned in our poster to the teacher, who gave us glowing praises. After she wandered off to another group, Lisette and I started talking to each other.

“You are a really amazing artist,” Lisette said softly. “Are you going to do something involving art as a career?”

I nodded. “Yes. I want to go into graphic design. I write and draw manga too, so I’m hoping to do that on the side. What about you?”

A sad look crossed Lisette’s face and then disappeared. “Mother and father think I would be best suited as a lawyer.”

I frowned and tilted my head. “Is that what you want to do?”

She bit her lip and cleared her throat. “Y-yes. It’s a practical, respectable career for my station.”

“Hmm.” My brows knitted together. “You hate the idea of becoming a lawyer. What do you really want to do, Lisette? I’m not one of the social elite you have to impress for your family. You can tell me.”

Her emerald eyes glittered for an instant and then she smiled shyly. “I...I like to cook. I want to have a small café.”

I smiled, getting a brief image of a very cute Lisette dashing around a kitchen in an apron. “Why isn’t that good enough for your family?”

The sad look came upon her face and this time it stayed. “It’s not ambitious enough and it doesn’t make enough money. And they won’t be able to brag about me and use my successes as an example of how brilliant our family is. Besides, I’m not going to hook a good husband who will bring honor to the family if I aim for something so low.”

My jaw dropped. I closed it and then opened it again. I scowled, furious. “Are you serious? What a load of bullshit! What the fuck?! Your family sounds horrible! It’s like they’re stuck in ye olden days!” Lisette flinched and hung her head. I sighed and crossed my arms over my chest. “Why don’t you refuse?”

Her eyes dropped to the desk and her voice became hollow. “My family has lived like this for centuries. We cannot change our ways. If I tried to refuse, I would be cast out without a penny to my name. I’ve already learned my lessons when it comes to defiance. It brings nothing but trouble.”

My eyes widened and then narrowed. “What kind of trouble?”

Her head shot up, her beautiful eyes wide and panicked. “N-never mind. Forget I said anything. It’s not important.”

“But-” I started.

She shook her head furiously. “It doesn’t matter.” She cleared her throat and then said lightly, “Are you ready for the winter break?”

I stared at her for a moment and then sighed, deciding I wouldn’t get anywhere if I tried to press on. “Yes, I am. I’m tired of school. I want to be able to relax for a while. What about you?”

Lisette nodded. “I’m ready. I have a lot of projects that need to be completed. AP likes to cut into my free time.”

I nodded and moaned. “I know what you mean! It’s driving me crazy! But, don’t you take more than this AP class?”

“Yes. All my classes except for my electives are AP,” she told me.

I let out a low whistle. “Damn.”

She frowned. “They’re not that bad. AP Physics is probably the worst one.”

I shuddered. “Bleh. Physics. AP Physics.”

Lisette smacked a hand to her forehead. “Damn. I forgot my binder.”

I gasped and then laughed.

“What?” she asked, an adorably confused look on her face.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever heard you cuss. It was cute,” I told her.

Lisette blushed and I laughed again. The teacher wrapped on the board and we turned to look at her.

“Okay, I’ve got an assignment to replace the essay. You’re going to work with your partners that I assigned you today. You will research the god or goddess that is associated with your character and write a combined essay that shows how the character aptly represents the god or goddess,” Mrs. Nite announced. “It’s due on January sixteenth.”

“The sixteenth,” Lisette muttered. “That gives us a month. But most of that is Christmas break...we’ll have to work on the essay over it.” She turned to me. “Are you going anywhere over the break?”

I shook my head. “What about you?”

“I’m going to New York on the twenty-sixth and coming back on the thirtieth,” she told me.

“Wow. New York.” I sighed wistfully. “When do you want to start?”

“I don’t care when we start,” she said.

I bit my lip and started thinking. “Hmm. We can work on it this weekend. You want to come over Friday?”

“Sure.” She smiled.

“Cool. You can just come home with me after school,” I said with a grin. “I usually just catch a ride with Luke though. Will that be okay?”

The bell rang and she smiled at me. She took her cell phone out. “Yeah, that’s fine. What’s your number? I’ll probably need it.”

I told her it and she put it in her phone and then nodded. She said good bye and then left the room. I walked out of the room and to Luke’s car in a daze. I sat in the passenger’s seat quietly and then grinned and started laughing.

“What’s with you?” Luke demanded, staring at me.

“Lisette and I have a project together in AP English. She’s coming over to my house tomorrow,” I said dreamily.

“Oh Lord,” Luke groaned.

I sighed happily and laughed. “Oooh, you know that it’s supposed to snow on Friday? Maybe she’ll get snowed in with me!”

Luke rolled his eyes and ruffled my hair. “Keep dreaming, kid.”
