The shivering novitiate from the end of the line grumbled at the man in front of her, “Naked? Why do we have to be naked?”
“Tradition, child. Tradition,” he whispered, eyes never leaving the tableau before him. “We enter the circle as we are born -- with nothing.”
“Cold. Did anyone ever think about it being too damned cold for such tradition?” the novitiate complained bitterly.
“Child, be still!” the man barked. “If you were not prepared to honor the old ways, to keep tradition, then perhaps, you should have stayed home!”
The young woman bowed her head, ashamed.
