Dirty. Filthy. Unclean.
The boys all watched Carmen tentatively as he pulled up his shirt and exposed the blue and purple chaos that covered most of his abdomen and continued up to his chest.
"Some of these are from last night." Carmen breathed out slowly, "And I took a few pills before leaving this evening."
None of the boys said anything. They knew Carmen didn't want their sympathy or their sorrowful words because those words wouldn't change anything. They wouldn't make Carmen feel better or stop his father from knocking him into next week.
They studied each bruise silently until Carmen let his shirt fall down over his stomach. "I want to stop, but I can't go on like this without them. I can't take my father pummeling the living crap out of me and telling me how I disgust him! But I'm scared…I'm scared that I might really die!" He was becoming hysterical. He wrapped his arms around himself and let his head hang down.
Silence crept over the others as Carmen tried to compose himself. The stillness lasted until Carmen rose and nodded that he was okay and the others could go on.
Emil's trembling voice shattered the silence.
"I—I guess I'll…go next…" He shuttered as everyone turned their attention to him. "My father died three years ago and my mother found it really hard to move on. When she finally met someone and told me she was getting married I was excited for her. The guy was really good to her and me, I really liked him. After they got married mom and I moved in with him and his son…" Emil trailed off and started trembling. His eyes began to glisten as tears force their way out and his hands balled themselves into tight fists.
Ban placed his hand on Emil's shoulder and reassured him it was okay to tell them. It was okay to be scared. It was okay to cry.
"M…my step brother, he…he molests me and…he makes me feel so dirty! I can always feel his fingers against my skin even when he's not touching me and it makes me feel filthy and unclean. And no matter how many times I shower and scrub my skin I can feel him." The tears were freely flowing now but his fists unclenched and a small amount of blood coated the tips of his finger nails informing the boys he'd clenched his hands so tight he broke the skin of his palm. "So I started burning my skin so I wouldn't feel him anymore…so I would feel clean."
