A New Friend and an Useful Ally

Chapter 3 – A new Friend and an useful ally

Sewenna knew better than to ask how her mentor knew whatever she knew. It was a fact, she was used to it by now.

“See you later Ash.”

“Bye bye sweetie!”

Sewenna was wearing a simple but beautiful mid-night blue velvet dress with short sleeves, her hands were dressed in black satin mittens and she had the black cloak around her shoulders which would make her blend in with the shadows. She’d be just a passive spie, for now. She didn’t even know why she was going to do this, but on the other hand, it wasn’t everyday that a new person moved to this small town, so there was no reason why she should not take a look at the girl.

So off she went, hair fluttering around her shoulders in the soft cool breeze, cloak flapping softly about her legs. She started walking faster, her black shoes clicking on the paved path that led to the gate. As she opened it quietly and got out of the garden, she broke into a run down the road, so that she could gain some speed to start her flight. As she hit the desired speed, she pranced and there she went, plummeting upwards towards the stars. Higher and higher she flew, the small city below looked like a doll-sized place. She breath deeply, scenting and feeling the auras of the people, the single scent of each single person, every single construction of an aura, some more transparent than others, the darker ones meant their persons were either older and wiser and more experienced in life or darker in spirit and mind. Emotions could be perceived through the colours an aura presented, sometimes the colours were quite distinct, in distinct layers, and that was called a transparent aura. Not because it was transparent, but because its components were very clear and easy to identify. When it was darker, it meant the colours were in fragmented and mixed pieces, in various hues of the same colour, like a sort of strange kaleidoscope.

Sewenna was good at seeing and understanding auras. She liked to feel, examine and explore each one in particular, to know what the people from the city felt. She knew every aura in that town, it was easy for her to identify people through them, she might not know their faces because she could only wander at night, but an aura was like a person’s second face, a second fingerprint, a second name. She could tell the baker’s wife felt tired and angry about her husband’s lack of sexual interest towards her, the little girl, the clock-maker’s daughter – yes, because that town was so provincial that it even had a clock-maker – was warm and content tucked snugly into her little bed, knowing she was safe in her house, listening to the little bird’s cuckoos as it came out of the clock, her aura painted in soft shades of pink and light-blue. Even the dog slumbering in his little doghouse in someone’s garden, she could feel his happiness because he was well fed and cared for by his owners.

She landed softly on the roof of the school. She then started fluttering from roof to roof, feeling every aura, looking for some she had never felt before. Those would be the newcomers’ auras. She smiled to herself as she found a small gray cat following her curiously, trying to sniff at her, for cats could understand when a creature was strange, not belonging to the normal nature pattern. Dogs did not like those creatures, they always barked and snarled at them as they felt that if they were from some supernatural world they’d certainly present some sort of danger to their owners or even to them. But cats were more curious. They weren’t so linked to human kind, so they did not fear those things humans feared. She knelt down on the roof, extended her mittened hand and called softly.

“Psss-psss-psss… Come on, don’t be shy, little one!”, she said sweetly. The cat approached carefully, its little cushioned paws not making a sound as they padded towards her. It rubbed against her hand and purred softly. “What a sweet little thing you are… And pretty too! Yes, you are, aren’t you? Such beautiful eyes… Come by the mansion, I might have a treat for you!”

The cat meowed softly.

“Yes, I know… I’d like to be your friend as well. What is your name little one?”

The cat’s mind projected the picture of a purple-skyed dawn, the gardens’ flowers were damp with dew, the air slightly misty and the earth smelling of coming rain.

“Hmmm. Dawn?”

The cat showed her the picture again, but this time the mist was clearer, she noticed it more.

“Misty Dawn?”

The cat meowed and rubbed again against her hand.

“Beautiful name! Now I have to keep going, there’s someone I want to find.”

She got up and flew to another roof, the cat sat down and stood watching her from the distance.

It was the only block of apartments in town. It wasn’t one of those ugly, cement-built things, but a beautiful four-story house that had been converted into four separate dwellings. It was there, on the highest floor, that Sewenna found what she was looking for. Two different auras. Yet… Yet there was something strange. They were fragmented auras, as if belonging to adults, suffering people, auras full of rage, pain, dark deep feelings that the vampire girl did not associate with a teenage girl. She analysed them separately. One of them was dominated by hues of sickly yellowish green, dark purple, blood red and black. That felt like uncoordinated feelings, wrong wants, rage, and greed, need to dominate, uncontrolled lust. The other aura was painted in shades of gray. It was almost all gray, greenish corpse gray, purplish gray, dark gray that was almost black. There was black as well, an entire layer of black actually. However, while she was examining it, she saw, very little, very shy, some fragments of pink, blue, and even white. White was almost absent. It was very hard even for an experienced aura examiner like Sewenna to find it, but it was there. This person was afraid. Fear, almost inexistent self-esteem, distrust, shame, revoltion and… Desire for friendship? Desire for safety, hope? It was difficult to interpret so small a piece of colour that was hardly visible. Sewenna only knew one thing: there was something terribly wrong with these two people. Red alert signs flashed in her mind as she started to take her own conclusions. She covered her face with her hands. She had been curious, only curious… And now she had been presented with such a desperate situation. But this was a time when, unfortunately, examining auras wouldn’t tell her all she needed and wanted to know. She could understand the feelings, but not the reasons behind them, at least not in this case, the pieces of colours were too confused, too fragmented, and too mixed for her to be able to make a coherent line of thought out of them. This case, she decided, needed to be approached to with more practical methods. But she couldn’t do much now. She couldn’t look through the windows, for they were shuttered. She could not break in a house to where she had not been invited beforehand. And obviously, she could not go knock at the door and ask «hey, what the hell is wrong with your auras? You have dark feelings, explain why.»

She needed help. But whose help? She needed to know what was happening, and therefore she needed to watch the girl during the day, and she obviously couldn’t just follow her around and watch what she was doing. There were many myths around vampires, which, unfortunately, weren’t true, such as the myth about them being able to turn invisible. How wonderful that would be. On the other hand, she was grateful about one thing: vampires, on the contrary of what myths affirmed, could walk under sunlight, since they be very careful for their skin was very delicate and sensitive and could easily get burns.

Now, how in the world would she get to...

«Wait a minute!», she thought to herself. «There might actually be a way. If only I could find the cat again...»

She sighed and prepared to fly again, in order to go look for the cat. But precisely when she was going to jump down from the roof, the feline appeared right beside her, quiet as a shadow.

“Oh, there you are!”, she exclaimed. “How did you know it was you I needed?”

The cat meowed low and rubbed against her legs. She sat down on one of the apartment’s balconies and the animal came to cuddle into her lap.

“Such a clever cat you are, aren’t you? I’d bet you can understand everything I say.”

The cat made a gesture with its head, which seemed too much like a nod not to be one.

“You can, can’t you?”

The cat made the same gesture once again.

“How? Are you a common cat?”

The cat nodded once again.

“So how is it possible that you can understand me? I mean, you don’t understand humans, do you?”

The cat nodded and after shook its head.

“Err... What does that mean? Is it that you only understand some humans?”

The cat nodded.

“Does it have anything to do with the sensitiveness each person possesses?”

The cat nodded again.

“Admirable... Wonderful indeed! I’d never known animals could... I mean... I didn’t know this was possible!”

The cat stared her in the eye. Then a sort of sequence of events invaded her mind. The events, however, seemed to be observed by eyes that were not her own, they focused things in a different way. And this was accompanied by thoughts, though strange, almost child-like ones.

The vampiress was open-mouthed. Well, the cat being able to understand humans, it was strange but didn\'t seem totally impossible. Now showing them pictures and almost movies through a mind link, now that was different. She had been a vampire for three centuries now and not once had she experienced anything like this!

“Bloody hell!”, she exclaimed, amazed at her own language. “How... How come? Do you do this many times?”

The gray cat shook her head.

“Well I should feel honoured then! Thank you!”

The cat purred softly.

“Cats are such special creatures... Always so beautiful, always so mysterious and clever... I like one thing about your kind, little one... You don’t trust easily. I really feel honoured for the fact that you trusted me, little one.”

The cat kept purring, her head rubbing against her hand.

“Would you help me sweet one? Would you spie on these humans for me?”

The cat nodded and licked her snout.

“Yes, there will be a nice boal of warm milk for you any time you want it. And you may come over when you need a... A nice den to sleep in, away from cold or rain.”

The cat looked her in the eyes once again and she saw herself, being looked at by the cat, and the thought was «this is a nice human.»

“Oh, thank you little one... Now I must go. Come along, do you want to? And tomorrow start spying as soon as you notice movement in the house. Follow the girl wherever she goes. Well, you know what to do, you don’t need me to instruct you, isn’t it?”

The cat looked at her with beautiful green eyes. Then nodded.

“Well... Would you show me what you think is important for me to know everyday? Why she smells of fear, what is wrong... I trust you know what I mean. Come now, I’ll get you something to eat.”

Both the vampire girl and the cat flew towards the mansion, the cat comfortably snuggled in her arms. As they arrived, Sewenna placed her softly on the floor and headed towards the kitchen. They didn’t usually eat, but sometimes they liked to remember how human food tasted like, so conveniently there was a carton of milk inside the fridge, from which she poured some into a boal and heated a little. Then she gave it to the gray cat who started to lap it up greedily.

“Well dearie I’m going to the library to read a little bit. My bedroom’s balcony is opened, through which we came in, in case you want to go. If you want to stay, that’s all right too. Well, good-night!”
