Treasures

Reaching into Naruin’s left pocket, Reinos pulled the key out. It was made of steel, and was attached to a gold chain. Examining its odd, triangular shape, Reinos noticed some words carved into it, even though he could not read them. He took note of this, and put the golden chain around his neck. Remembering his new mission, he set out to retrieve the chest, and find Ariena. As he got up, he saw the tracks of the wolf leading towards where the chest lay, and, fearing it was stolen, rushed to the counter, hoping that the wolf hadn’t taken it.
Reaching the counter, Reinos spotted the chest almost immediately. It was different than he had expected. It was not very wide or tall, but it was long, five times longer than its width. It was made of a dark wood, ornately decorated with gold and silver at its corners, and a dragon carved onto the lid. The lock was made of steel, and had a triangular keyhole. It looked like the key should fit. It also had the same words carved onto it. Reinos lifted the chest onto the counter, and removed the key from his neck.
He slid the key into the lock, and turned it. With a click, the lock slid open. Removing the lock, he set it aside. Reinos slowly opened the chest, and was shocked by what he saw. Inside was a short sword made of an unknown metal, and a golden sheath.
The sheath was adorned with a silver dragon that stretched from one end of the sheath to the other. The sword had a strange dimly glowing metal on the edges that made it sharper than any other known blade. A round ruby was held by what looked like a dragon claw, decorating the hilt. It was a weapon to both admire and fear.
Reinos stood in awe, admiring the blade that he promised to protect. He picked up the blade, and upon touching it, the ruby glowed brightly. The sword was warm to the touch. Reinos was amazed at how light the blade was. He swung it through the air, and it made a strange humming noise. Setting the blade down, Reinos lifted the sheath out of the chest, and discovered a small envelope lying underneath. Curious, he attached the sheath to his belt, put the sword inside, and picked up the envelope. Inside, he found a note and a golden ring that was similar, if not identical to the ring that Ariena had. Reinos pulled out the note, and began to read it.

“I trust you, the finder of this chest, with its contents. The sword is an heirloom that was passed down for many generations. It was said to have driven the forces of darkness away many years ago. The ring was worn by the wielder of the sword, whose name has been lost in the sands of time. With both of these, you will be able to destroy the darkness that is returning to the world. Take them, and prevent them from falling into the hands of evil, or they will be misused, and lead to the destruction of the world. I leave you with a final warning. Do not let the power of evil take control of you, or it will be at your hands that the world will be destroyed.
Naruin Milunas

Amazed at the significance of the items he had been trusted with, Reinos picked up the sword and carefully placed it into the sheath at his side. He then picked up the ring, and slid it onto the golden necklace that the key used to be on. He placed it around his neck, and opened the door to the back room, hoping to find Ariena.
As the door creaked open, Reinos watched as a small bird flew out and landed on one of the high rafters above him. He realized it must be a pet of Ariena’s, and continued opening the door. When the door was fully opened, he was confused when he didn’t see Ariena in the small, cluttered room. Entering, he saw an area of the floor was removed, revealing a hole large enough for him to fit through, and, undoubtedly, Ariena. He immediately went to the area of the room with the hole in it, and peered down. He saw an old, wooden ladder attached to one side of the downward tunnel that must lead to an old tunnel that would likely lead him out of the city, and to Ariena.
“It’s too dark,” he muttered to himself. “There has to be a candle or something around here.” He began to search the room, and saw a strange wooden staff leaning in a dark corner of the room. It was decorated with a large emerald on its tip, held on by a thick golden wire wrapped around it. Noting it, he looked to Ariena’s desk, and found a lit candle, and took it.
Returning to the staff, Reinos picked it up, and felt a strange energy flow through him. Afraid, he dropped the staff and backed away. Regaining his courage, he reached out and picked it up again. Once again he felt the energy flow through him, but held on to it. Assuming it was important, he took it as he began his descent.
