Chapter 3
It was almost noon before Evan got off the overfilled city bus in front of the main gate of EMU. He managed to get on the wrong bus at the bus transit station, have a panic attack, get off the bus at the random stop and find his way to the uni hopping from the trolley to another bus. He was hungry and worn out.
Evan approached the arch of the open gate on trembling legs. The dark stone wall was bigger than on the pictures, the gate taller. The
old security guard sat in the little glass booth by the gate. Should he just walk in or talk to the guard? Evan stalled, touching the roughly hewn stone of the ancient wall.
"ID."
The guard did not move, like a still doll in the uniform, but his eyes regarded Evan with annoyance.
Evan came to the booth and fumbled to get his uPen out of the backpack. He held it up, looking at the guard.
"Insert the pen into the penhole."
The guard's eyes were cold like shiny metal buttons on his olive uniform. He watched the skinny, rumpled boy in front of him jabbing the pen into the small round opening on the front of the booth. The beep and the golden glow signaled the end of transfer.
...
"You may remove the uPen."
...
"Should I go in?"
"It's up to you. Your arrival has been recorded and the helpful info uploaded. The dorm allocation and directions are in your pen."
"Thank you..."
The boy picked up his backpack and walked through the gate, clutching the uPen in his hand.
The guard pressed the button on his coffeemaker and called out to his colleague at the other gate:
"Hey, old boy. I got my first arrival this year. It's a guy."
"Oh, grimes, I owe you twenty."
"Naw, you owe me fifty."
"Fifty! He can't be all that bad!"
"Oh yes, it's bad. The kid is a total bumpkin from the swamp. Came on the city bus and wearing the best shirt the Clothes Swaps can offer. I can't believe the riffraff they admit to the uni these days. This place is going to the dogs."
"He won't last anyway. They all drop out after the first semester. Too much drinking and screwing around. Young people these days can't be bothered with education, even if it's for free."
"You still owe me fifty."
The guard lifted a freshly brewed cup of coffee to his face and inhaled the heavenly scent. The students will start coming in droves soon.
---
Evan walked through the gate, the stone pavement uneven under his feet. The path took him straight to the main administrative building. Evan sat on the wide wooden bench in front of him and pulled the tablet out of his backpack. He touched the surface with his pen and saw the map and the dorm info.
"Welcome to the Empire Mills University!
You are due to secure your dorm accommodations before Saturday of this week. Failure to secure accommodations may result in losing them. You are currently assigned to the Malcolm Shitz building, dorm 217A. Check the map we included for directions.
You are due to report to the Starters Lead before Tuesday of the next week. Check the map we included for directions.
All students are required to have their ID at all times. Failure to produce an ID on the school grounds may result in detention until proving identity. Some buildings and amenities will be inaccessible without your ID.
The standard form of ID in the EMU is a uPen.
Sincerely,
The EMU enrollment committee."
Evan checked the map. A thick red line connected his current location with the Malcolm Shitz building. He picked up his staff and started walking, staring at the amazing old structures. Most of them were only three stories high and well-kept. There were no people in site and Evan could easily imagine himself in the ancient times.
The Malcolm Shitz building turned out to be a bit disappointing. It seemed to be built in this century, even though the architect tried to give it medieval look. Evan used his uPen to get inside. There were no people and the place smelled of glue and moldy parquet flooring. He found his way to the second floor, stabbed the uPen into the penhole by the door 217A and finally entered his dorm room.
