Zombie Sweetheart by Send More Paramedics

“Why would James want to court me?” The words slipped out of her lips before she considered how rude that sounded. Sighing, Sammy tried to rephrase, “I mean I'm new, non-important, I am just curious as to what he sees in me.”

James just smiled, and although he was missing a few teeth it made him look even more delicious, in a non-devouring kind of way, “I like you Samantha, to put it simply, you're different and any zombie would be honored if you accepted his hand.”

“If this is true, then why is it that nobody has tried courting me before now?”

“Out of respect, or fear, of me I presume.” He offered out his hand, “Would you please go for a walk with me?”

Smiling Sammy took his hand, ignoring the sly wink Matilda gave her, and they set out to walk around their territory. “Do you mind if I ask you something?”

“Anything you wish to ask I will answer.”

“I have always wondered about us. How is it that some of us change into what we are now while others become our food?”

James pondered the question thoughtfully and rubbed his hand through his hair, “I'm unsure of the complete reason and honestly I never really thought about it too much. I think it's because of what makes a person. Have you ever noticed that our kind is full of people who are generous, thoughtful, and were upstanding citizens before we became what we are. We do not worry about murder, rape, stealing, or anything like that. I honestly believe it has to do with a persons character.”

Sammy had noticed these things before but never really thought about it that way, “So if I were a bad person I may have been food when my father bit me instead of his adopted daughter?”

“Most likely, I'm not completely positive, it's just a guess.”

“When is the next hunt?”

He eyed her warily knowing her nature too well for someone he barely knew, “It's in a few days, but I really would wish for you to not go on it.”

“Oh but please let me go, I really want to go on the hunt, it'll be my first.”

If James had still had his nose he would of pinched the bridge in frustration, but instead he just sighed, “I won't stop you but I want you to stay next to me the whole time, the others do fight back and we can be hurt. We are not alive and therefore won't age, but they can still hurt us to the point where we are just a shell, no longer moving nor thinking. All it takes is a shot to the head or to sever our heads.”

“I've always wondered, do we rot?”

James grinned again, “Most certainly not, I don't know why but something in our genes preserves us, that is why even though we lose limbs we can still function. Our nerve systems work, as does our thinking and the like; but whatever chemical is in us keeps our dead cells working properly and from decomposing.”

“Sounds complicated.”

“True, but I have a feeling that what I feel for you isn't.”

She looked him in the eyes in shock, “What do you mean?”
