Chapter 3

A/N: I used this story as entry for NaNoWriMo 2009 starting from Chapter 3. So I basically have around 56K words in, not including the first 2 chapters posted already. I will need to do a lot of editing though since I just mindlessly typed during the NaNoWriMo period. So I'll probably be able to post regularly, hopefully every week. That is if I get done with all the writing challenges I signed up for. I hope everyone enjoys this chapter. This time, it's written in Josh's POV.

I would like to thank the lovely people who had left reviews on the previous part: Erica, kylee, Paradox13, Anise, and Takumi Fujiwara. The awesome Paradox13, by the way, had started an update mailing list for this story. So if anyone wants to be included in the mailing list, please send a request to mccupdates@gmail.com. Thanks Paradox13 for doing this!!!

Chapter 3

Life could certainly be full of surprises. Things happen in the least way anyone would expect. In all the four years Josh had been with Carnelitech IT Solutions, he never thought that he and Brent Ambreigh would end up being friends.

From the first day he laid eyes on Brent, he’d seen more of his arrogance rather than his talents. But as years went by, he had learned to respect Brent because he had proven himself worth the pride he carried on his shoulders when it came to getting the company on its feet.

But there was something on Brent’s cool, calm and collected manner that often got under his skin. And Josh had never been able to place his finger on it until one time, during a staff meeting, Brent had showered him with praises for leading his team in accomplishing two major projects before the deadline.

Barely an hour had passed after the said meeting was over and Josh was still on cloud nine when Brent came up to him and uttered, “I’m glad you decided to listen to my advice. I told you my systematic approach in project completion would work.” And he went off with his head high above his shoulders.

Josh still regretted not kicking Brent’s butt, literally, that time.

Anyway…

It hadn’t been all hell with Brent though. There were times when he was sincere with the compliments he offered without having it reflected back on him. And Josh would be a hypocrite if he didn’t admit that those were the times he saw Brent in a different light.

There were some things that Josh would have preferred to keep his nose out of. But his workmates couldn’t seem to find any other topic of discussion during coffee breaks. So Josh had to endure hearing tales about whom Brent had been dating, how long he was in a relationship with so and so, comparison between the number of girlfriends he’d had for the past year and the year before that, how long it took for him to start a new relationship after a recent break up, among other personal things.

Josh couldn’t help but think, for fuck’s sake! He’s not Brad fucking Pitt!

The huddles that Josh constantly (and unwillingly) found himself in the middle of seemed to be a key to open up another part of him. And this part had driven him into watching Brent more frequently than he normally would have liked. It had nudged him into paying closer attention to Brent’s physique hence, he’d unintentionally discovered that Brent’s shoulders were a bit broader than his, his chest seemed taut and defined, his arms looked buffed and the globes on his backside were well-rounded that Josh often found himself wondering how it would feel against his palms.

Then things happened.

And it led to the point wherein Brent had called him every night to either rant about the fact that his cheating girlfriend didn’t want a total break up but was opting for an open relationship. Sometimes he’d call just to teach Josh how to marinate a steak properly.

What the fuck?

It had been almost two weeks of trying to get used to the new pattern in his life. If this served as punishment for his sins, then he deeply regretted having sinned. The unnerving part of the routine that this newfound, somehow bizarre (in his opinion, at least, but don’t ask why) friendship was that he was falling for Brent.

What drove Josh even crazier was the fact that Brent had rather started feeling comfortable leaning into his personal space. Sometimes… No, make that all the time, he wondered whether Brent’s advances were merely his casual way of making Josh feel that they were indeed friends now. Or if it meant something else.

Of course, Josh knew how delusional he was to even think that Brent would be interested in him. The guy’s as straight as a pole holding up the flag right outside their building. Or maybe not, in Josh’s opinion. But Brent probably wasn’t aware of that part of himself yet and the last thing Josh would want was to deal with a self-centered closet case.

Nevertheless, the advantage of this little change was there had been less animosity between them. The sarcasm they normally threw at each other had turned into good-natured teasing.

Josh sighed as he went back to the presentation he had been working on. He had to get it done for the meeting set late noon. It was a pretty tough project plan to work on since this would be for a large-scale company. He just hoped he wouldn’t screw it up because he certainly didn’t want to disappoint Dwight, who entrusted him with this responsibility. And he didn’t want Brent to be upset. He was just glad he hadn’t seen Brent lose his temper these days.

“Do you mind telling me why you took my reservation for conference room A?” Or so he thought. Brent had stormed into his office, looking rather murderous. And Josh nearly jumped off his seat because he didn’t see him coming and… what the fuck did he just say?

Josh resorted to alternating between raising an eyebrow and creasing his forehead before he found the right sense to speak up. “Excuse me?”

It was easy enough to distinguish that Brent was trying to control his temper because of the clenched fists he kept at his sides and when he spoke… oh my, when he spoke, it was through gritted teeth. “My reservation? Conference room A? Why did you grab it right under my nose?”

Now, what on earth...? Is this guy on drugs or had he hit his head on something hard? Josh thought.

“Brent,” he started and his chair squeaked when he leaned back on it. “I asked Bridge to make the reservation a week ago.” There was a chirping sound on his desk and he got distracted. He reached out for his phone and pressed a button to check whom the text message was from. Oh fuck.

“But…” Josh had to look up and the first thing he noticed was the look of utter confusion that hung on Brent’s face. “I also asked Bridge to…” Brent’s forehead creased. Then a faint gleam went past his face and Josh presumed, thank goodness, Brent finally remembered what they talked about. “Wait a minute. What do you need the room for?”

Duh. Josh was half tempted to hurl his laptop toward Brent. “The Kramier meeting? I was gonna say I reserved the room not just for me but for us. Since you said I should be there and represent the programming team or have you forgotten all that speech you gave about me needing to step into the management role and such and such?”

Judging from the change in Brent’s expression, realization seemed to be dawning on him. “Fuck.” Brent sank on the chair in front of Josh’s table, his face reflected defeat. He pressed his fingers against the bridge of his nose, something, Josh had noticed, Brent often did to relieve tension. “I’m sorry. It totally slipped my mind.”

Now that was a first, sarcastically speaking. But Josh actually felt pity.

“I could totally understand. You have a lot of things going on.” The air around them shifted and it was quite comforting to feel the casual ambiance that they both had gotten used to for the past couple of weeks. “It’s not easy trying to go through a break up with a girl who wanted to keep you on her right side while she had her gym instructor on her left.” Josh felt compelled to tease to make light of the situation.

Brent seemed to be holding back the annoyance that Josh could bet was milling about him. “Did you have to rub it in?” he said, thrusting his lower lip out in obvious pretense that he was upset. But it only made Josh snigger.

“You know,” Josh started, leaning over his table and he noticed the movement on Brent’s throat like he had to swallow or something. And Brent suddenly seemed uneasy from the way he kept shifting on his seat. “I think you’re beating yourself up. You shouldn’t try to carry everything on your shoulders.”

“Yeah. Maybe you’re right” was Brent’s uncertain response.

“Josh.” Bridget was standing by the doorway, her gaze switched from Josh to Brent and back. “Is… Is there anything else you’ll need for the Kramier meeting?”

“No Bridge, thanks. I’m good,” Josh said a little too soon so Bridget had moved away before he suddenly remembered the materials. “Oh.” The Sector One’s secretary retreated and leaned back, her eyebrow raised in question. “If you could just make sure that the proposals and other information necessary are on the meeting packets?”

“No problem.”

When Bridget was out of earshot, Brent said, “You should keep her in Sector One. I think she’ll make an effective assistant.”

One corner of Josh’s mouth twitched. “Right. So you could keep Cam when she gets back.”

“Hey, I’m gonna need a secretary” was Brent’s quick defense. “By the way, were you able to find Kramier’s company profile in Cam’s computer?”

“Yeah I have it.” Josh tugged at the corner of his lips, arching it up to give Brent a reassuring smile. “Relax okay? We’ll nail this one just like you have with our other major accounts.”

There was no trace of doubt anywhere on Brent’s semblance this time. “So…” Brent said in a singsong tone. “Do I have to join the meeting later, or can you handle it all on your own?”

Josh had to lift an eyebrow. “You’re kidding right? I may have everything under control, but I’m still relying on your guidance.” Okay. That sounded a bit desperate. But it was the truth. And it’s not that Josh wasn’t that confident to face a potential client, but he had been in the position for merely two weeks at least. Not the appropriate amount of time to gain experience in closing a new deal.

“And I thought you were independent.” Josh knew from Brent’s tone that he was only teasing. Josh would have to get back at him later.

Instead, Josh said in a thought-provoking tone, “Not when I’m dealing with a two-million-dollar contract.”

What Josh’s said must’ve struck some sense into Brent, because he said, “If that’s the case, then I’ll see you later.”

*****

The meeting turned out well, of course, and the client’s representatives actually found the proposals interesting.

Josh had been nervous before doing the presentation but Brent had been there to reassure him by squeezing his arm and his shoulder occasionally. And since he had been sitting beside Brent, the other man’s hand somehow landed on his knee and gave it a supposedly reassuring squeeze, oh my fuck, before Josh had to stand at the end of the table and face everyone.

As if that was suppose to help him gain confidence. Hell no. The gesture, instead, sent a thrill straight down to Josh’s crotch. It was a good thing he was nervous enough that his mind managed to drift off to other thoughts.

The rest of their company’s representatives did their part really well to sell their services. And Brent… Brent was exceptional

It was almost like Brent had these buttons that he could press to switch from a rattled, disoriented individual to someone who was in full control of himself and made it seem that the world revolved around him.

Josh was certain that he matched the colors of the cherry red upholstery of the conference room chairs when Brent laid out laudatory remarks about him that led the client to regard him with high appraisals. “With Josh, you’re in perfectly good hands,” Brent had said, and the way his eyes fluttered over to Josh made Josh feel weak in the knees.

Relief flowed through Josh as soon as the meeting had adjourned and he had just gotten back at his office when Brent appeared on his doorway.

“Great job back there, kiddo,” Brent said in a tone Josh knew was meant to pull his strings and test his patience. And Josh couldn’t help but roll his eyes thinking that Brent just wouldn’t give up trying to push him to the edge.

“I don’t see why you need to call me kiddo seeing as you’re only a year older than I am,” Josh pointed out and he was half-tempted to return the favor. He nibbled on his lower lip for a while then shrugged. “Unless you’re too keen on stressing that you’re old.” He couldn’t help but inwardly yell ‘yes, yes, yes!’ when Brent leered at him. “But thanks for the compliment.”

Retaliation seemed to be hanging on the tip of Brent’s tongue and had just opened his mouth when Lee, from marketing, ambled in with a smile that was as freakishly wide as the Panama Canal.

“Well congratulations boys. You’ve got the Kramier account,” Lee blurted out in a voice loud enough that made it seem like he had a subwoofer between his abdominal and thoracic cavities. “We should all celebrate. How ‘bout hitting ‘The Paradigm’ tonight?”

“Uh, can’t,” Brent said, rubbing on the back of his neck. “I kinda have a date tonight.”

Lee stared at Brent like he just said something in an unknown foreign dialect and quite frankly, so did Josh. But before Josh could ask, Lee beat him to the punch. “I thought you’d broken up with your girlfriend?”

“I have,” Brent replied matter-of-factly, slipping his hands into his pant pockets. “I’m going out with an old friend from high school.”

With Brent’s reputation in relationships and dating, this no longer came as a surprise. Even if Josh had to endure several nights of listening to him vow to all the saints known to men that he would not rush into a relationship anymore, only one thought came to Josh: He doubted Brent even believed in saints.

And just as Lee was saying, “Oh well, perhaps next time,” Josh’s cell phone rang.

His eyes widened the moment he saw who the caller was. “Excuse me, I have to take this,” Josh told Lee and Brent. He brought the phone against his ear the moment the two men sauntered out. “Stefan?”

“Hey babe, how are you? Did you get my text message?” His ex-boyfriend and occasional... well, fuck buddy’s voice came loudly over the earpiece.

“I’m well and yes, I got it. And yes, we’re still on for dinner. We’re trying out the new Italian place, right? Rubio Pizzeria?” Stefan was the distraction Josh needed to get his mind off Brent. And he just loved the man’s timing. When Josh leaned back on his chair, he caught a glimpse of someone’s shadow standing right outside his doorway but he chose to ignore it and went on to clarify the time he would need to pick up Stefan at his hotel.

*****

The ambiance was cozy but not extremely classy, which Josh actually preferred. It was a typical Italian place, with round wooden tables and chairs set in the middle of the open area, square tables sat by the window and booths lined the inner walls. Red and white-checkered tablecloths adorned every table.

The music that filled the restaurant wasn’t the typical folk music though, but rather a mix of techno, trance, and electronica of the mid-nineties and early two thousandths from the likes of Molella, Gabry Ponte, Gigi D`Agostino and more.

Josh and Stefan were seated in a booth across each other. The benches were upholstered with black and white plush chenille. The ceramic centerpiece was a horse carriage but instead of a horse, candleholders were intricately molded at the end of the reins. The carriage itself served as condiments holder.

Their food were being served when Josh thought he saw someone who looked fairly familiar walk in and he had to blink twice to make sure that his eyes weren’t playing tricks on him. Before his brain could register who it was, Brent had already met his gaze.

“Oh. Mother. Fucking. Beast,” Josh mumbled under his breath before he plastered a forced smile when Brent, and apparently his date lagging behind him, strode over to their booth.

Through his eyes’ periphery, he noticed Stefan had followed his gaze. “Friend of yours?” he asked in a low voice.

“Worse,” Josh muttered through gritted teeth. “He’s my boss.”

“Josh! This is quite a surprise.” Each corner of Brent’s mouth was nearly reaching both his ears but Josh could still see the hidden sneer behind it, especially when Brent turned to Stefan.

Damn it. Now Josh was obliged to introduce them, otherwise he would be bordering on rudeness. Not that he cared. “Hi Brent. Uhm, this is my ex, Stefan Tagarelli.” And he found no need to introduce Brent in return because after Brent parroted ‘your ex, huh’, he had offered his hand and made the introduction himself. Jerk.

He didn’t think his day could get any worse, but he was proven wrong when Stefan asked Brent, “Would you care to join us?” after Brent had introduced his date, Germaine.

His fingers nearly had cramps when he crossed it too tightly, hoping that Brent would decline. But he could feel his world crumbling down when Brent accepted.

At least Stefan was still in his right mind to slide out of his seat and transfer over to Josh’s side to give the other bench to Brent and the girl – or Germaine.

The waiter came soon after and Brent requested for a separate order. Josh felt rather uncomfortable starting with his meal and it seemed Stefan had the same sentiments because he kept his hands clasped on the table.

After Brent and his date had placed their orders, Brent glanced at them and he seemed to realize what they were doing. “Oh you don’t have to wait for us, you guys could go ahead and start with your dinner.”

With a shrug, Josh dug into his baked penne ziti while Stefan went through his chicken balsamico. They started a casual conversation about the earlier traffic jam. It evolved into a heightened discussion about football, which was verging on a heated debate between Brent and Stefan.

Thankfully, Germaine had the wits to start a topic about some reality TV show involving amateur fashion designing challenges that got Josh into a perfervid discourse. It was enough to leave Brent and Stefan nonplussed.

“Germaine designs clothes that’s why she’s so into that show,” Brent had managed to butt in since Stefan had jumped into their conversation when they started talking about modeling.

“Oh, that’s awesome!” Josh exclaimed and casually added, “Stefan is actually a photographer. He normally does fashion shoots and occasionally do outdoors as a hobby.” And he rambled on about Stefan’s outdoor photos making it to the top galleries in Italy, France and New York.

Josh watched as the fork filled with grilled scampi slipped between Brent’s lips and he chewed it with an undeniable scowl on his face while Germaine asked Stefan about his latest projects. Brent flipped his eyes momentarily towards Josh, perhaps not expecting that Josh was studying him. Something unreadable went past Brent’s face and Josh wondered what he was up to.

“Mmm… This is good,” Stefan uttered as he shoved a forkful of ravioli into his mouth. “Herebabe, trythis.” Stefan’s words tumbled over each other while he gently pushed a forkful of the dish into Josh’s mouth. It was a good thing Josh’s lips were parted; otherwise, the sauce would’ve smeared on his face. He had no idea what Stefan was doing but he thought he ought to lean into his touch when Stefan swiped his thumb along his lower lip.

“Taste it. It’s good, I promise.” Josh heard Brent saying and when he faced the couple across their table, he saw Germaine wrapping her lips around the tip of the spoon that Brent was holding up. And Brent seemed to be mirroring Stefan’s gesture when he pressed a napkin on Germaine’s chin. But Germaine swatted his hand away.

Before Josh realized that he had been going through a childish notion of trying to prove who had a better date with Brent, he had let the fact slip that Stefan used to be part of his college’s varsity team in tennis. This led Brent to challenge Stefan on a two-on-two game and to Josh’s dismay, Stefan accepted.

“Cool,” Brent said as they were paying for their dinner. “Saturday morning, then? At the country club.”

*****

“Aw, aw, aw,” Stefan cried out when Josh kept smacking him on his arm. “What was that for?” He practically lost his smooth, very practiced American accent and his natural Italian drawl swirled with on tongue.

“You jerk! Why did you agree to play that silly game with Brent? You shouldn’t have given him the satisfaction!” Josh ranted, still fuming at the thought that Brent had gone competitive again.

Stefan had both his hands raised, ready to block any more blows that Josh might send his way. “But babe, you didn’t warn me about him.”

That was a valid point. But Josh had an excuse. “How the heck was I supposed to warn you? First, I didn’t know he was going to be at the same restaurant. Then when I saw him, he immediately made his way to our table and he was right there in front of us all evening.”

“Well, that was quite a strange coincidence for him to walk in on the same place,” Stefan said thoughtfully. “There are, after all, a lot of restaurants in the area, if not in the entire city alone.”

The parking lot at the side of the hotel was starting to empty as some vehicles had drove out. Josh watched an obviously gay couple pass by. The taller man had his arm around the shorter man’s waist and was leaning in as if he was whispering something to his partner. But his mind wasn’t entirely on the couple. What Stefan said made him remember made him wonder if Brent knew where he’d be that night.

“Fuck,” he muttered while lost in his own thoughts.

“Would love to,” Stefan growled in a deep, sultry voice. He turned to Stefan with an eyebrow pushed all the way up to the middle of his forehead. And the man had his head resting against the back of his seat, slightly tilted so he was peering through his lashes, his gray eyes had turned dark.

It was a sight enough to make Josh’s cock stir. “Uhm…” Where his coherency had gone to, he had no idea.

“You wanna go up to my room?” Josh knew he shouldn’t. He mustn’t. But Stefan always had this certain pull he couldn’t resist. So Josh found himself stepping out of the car and following Stefan inside the hotel.

They were inside the elevator when hesitancy hit Josh once more. Two sides of his conscience played an intensive game of tug-o-war during the entire elevator ride.

Half of him wanted to do this. His body craved for it. Ached for it. It had been three months since he broke up with Blane and hence, last had sex. Well, not counting the one he and Brent uhm… the fact neither nor one of them could remember what happened probably didn’t make it count. Probably.

This was nothing new. He ought to be used to this, to what he and Stefan had. Casual sex. No strings attached. No bullshit drama or anything complicated. Just the plain idea of releasing their body’s strong desires. And besides, how could he change his mind when Stefan had him pressed up against the wall and sucking on his clavicle.

It took three tries for Stefan to slip his keycard through the slot because his lips were locked with Josh’s. And Josh could feel him grinding his bulge against Josh’s own. The thin fabric of their pants provided a delicious friction that sent shivers all throughout Josh’s body.

They stumbled into the dimly lit room. The door was still halfway open when Stefan started removing Josh’s shirt. Once Josh had been rid off his top garment, he in turn struggled to unbutton Stefan’s shirt. Growling in frustration when his fingers started trembling halfway through, Josh clutched at the middle of Stefan’s shirt and pulled it open.

Stefan dove for his lips, and Josh could sense the other man’s hunger, feel the other man’s tongue invade his mouth. Josh had one arm coiled around Stefan’s neck and his other hand was gripping on Stefan’s arm, his nails digging into the other man’s flesh. Their tongues battled for dominance as their lips glided sloppily, desperately.

When the back of Josh’s legs bumped against the edge of the bed, they both toppled over the mattress with their mouths still fused together. Then Stefan pulled away. Josh could feel the cool, wet surface of Stefan’s lips move along his jaw, sucking at a spot and soothing the skin with the warm tip of his tongue. The slightly rough hands glided along his sides, mapping every bump of his muscles and when Stefan’s hand moved towards his chest, Josh felt a thumb paused to rub on his nipples.

The room seemed to spin as Stefan continued to devour him, sucking and licking at Josh’s exposed skin. A warm, wet and velvety flesh was pressed against Josh’s neck, lapping at every inch and licking a trail down his torso. Josh arched his body when he felt the tip of Stefan’s warm tongue gliding around his nipples. Then Stefan had captured the hardened nub between his lips, sucking on it before nibbling lightly with his teeth. Stefan gave the other nipple the same treatment and Josh couldn’t help but squirm wildly underneath.

Josh’s erection was struggling within its confines and he was glad that Stefan seemed to have decided not to waste time. Stefan had already slid down further, nipping on the exposed skin of his abs and swirling his tongue deep within his navel. Josh couldn’t help but plea. “Oh gawd, please.”

Too dazed with arousal, Josh didn’t notice how Stefan undid his pants with such speed that the next thing he knew, it was pulled down at his knees with his boxers and the cool air within the room had hit his hardened cock.

Every muscle in his body screamed with desire. He wanted this. He convinced himself he needed this to extinguish the flame within his core. His hesitation cracked as soon as he felt strong fingers coil around the base of his erection.

Then Josh felt the tip of Stefan’s tongue tracing the sensitive nerves that angrily stretched across the surface of his cock. A shudder surged through him, eliciting what sounded like a low, carnal sound from the back of his throat.

Josh’s eyes shot open when he felt the tip of Stefan’s tongue press into the slit of his cock’s head, flicking through it and licking off his precum hungrily. His mouth fell open in a silent scream, when his shaft was engulfed in the warmth of Stefan’s mouth.

The pressure that settled on Josh’s lower abdomen and his balls tightened when Stefan’s lips glided up and down his shaft rapidly then paused at the head, lips clinging against the underside as Stefan began to suck in earnest. Josh thought his brain was going to explode.

The bells rang within the back of Josh’s ears when he felt the edge of Stefan’s teeth lightly and ever-so-gently scraping through the surface of his member then lifting back with his teeth grazing against the frenulum.

Josh hadn’t realized that he was the one who had been making keening noises that resounded through the hollow of his ears. Beads of sweat trickled down his temple and a few clung on his eyebrows. Stefan’s hand was clinging roughly against his hip. But that wasn’t enough to stop him from bucking up when he felt Stefan take his entire length deep into his throat.

The sac of his scrotum stretched to the limit as the pressure became too much to bear. The feel of the warm and wet hollow hungrily sucking his cock, the tongue lapping and swirling at the head, the gliding of the hardened lips across the slightly loose skin were the only sensation that his body was capable of acknowledging at the moment.

Nearly incoherent pleading continued to spill out of Josh’s lips. He was close. The sight of Stefan’s head bobbing between his legs was somehow mesmerizing. And for a split instant, the image of Brent naked flashed through his dazed mind.

A flame ignited within him. Brent. Josh’s thoughts suddenly swirled around the scene that happened weeks before and he could almost feel Brent’s breath burning through his skin, could almost smell Brent’s heady scent. It was Brent’s warm mouth that he now imagined swallowing his cock whole, urging his release. He could feel his balls tightening, his belly about to explode. One last tug. One last suck, then his release erupted in a steady stream.

Mild shudders coursed throughout his body for a moment before it settled down and made him feel like floating. White spots danced over his closed eyelids. When Josh finally settled back down from his ecstasy, he could feel the tingling sensation wane and his breathing slowly falling into normal pace.

When Josh’s eyes finally lifted open, he saw Stefan sitting on his knees beside Josh’s hips. Traces of semen were still visible on the corner of his mouth. His chin glistened with spit. His forehead creased to a frown. His somewhat scrutinizing gaze locked on Josh’s face.

“Stefan? What’s wrong?” Josh asked when he finally found his voice.

Stefan wiped his chin with the back of his hand before clearing his throat. “When you came… well, when you,” he said, shifting to lie on his side beside Josh and then propped on his elbow. “When you reached your orgasm, you called out someone else’s name. Not that I expected you to call out mine, but…”

Nothing else was uttered. Stefan trailed off as if he was prompting Josh to ask. What the heck? “Who’s name did I call out?” Josh tugged at his boxers and pants and quickly pulled it up his waist.

A knowing grin spread across Stefan’s face and there was a shimmer on his eyes as he uttered, “It was Brent’s.”
