There's No Way
Chapter 3: There’s No Way
The one leading them Zack didn’t want to believe that the one guy that put him in the hospital without a chance to walk again was coming to towards him with a big smile on his face.
“Please don’t tell me that’s Harrison,” Zack said under his breath as the short curly haired boy with sunglasses on came up to them and stopped still having that smile on his face. It was no doubt that he knew Zack and from the look on Zack’s face he recognized the other boy. Zack decided not to look at him but at all the rest and can only pick a few that would be able to make the team. From what he remembered Harrison was a one man team, and to say he’s changed is an understatement. Zack thought that Harrison moved after he put him in the hospital and was in a correction center for the most part he didn’t think that this boy would be back. Pretending not to know him he took the clip board from Erin who handed it to him and looked down the list seeing who would be with him for the drills. He picked out his fifteen making sure Harrison Jonathan Williams was in his group. He gave the clip board back to Erin and nodded then after the two went over the groups with Coach Boone he nodded in agreement and looked at the boys that were trying out, “Alright ladies gear up and get warmed up today we start conditioning and if you can’t take it then you’re more than welcome to leave,” After he said that the boys picked a spot on the side line and began to gear up.
“Hey Zack isn’t that Harrison?” Jon asked as Zack was walking on to the field.
“The one and only,”
“What’s he doing here I thought he was still at that center for what he did to you,”
“I guess he got out you know his dad is the Governor, how would it look on his dad’s social profile knowing that he has a son that goes to a dentition center,” Zack told him as he kicked a ball up with his foot and began to bounce it.
“Yeah, they probably told they press that they sent him to boarding school or something,”
“That’s what I’m guess and then daddy paid big bucks to get him out,” he told his friend as he switched the ball to his other foot.
“Do you think he still plays like a one man team?” Jon asked as Zack passed him the ball.
“There’s only one way to find out, if he does the coach will see it and then tell me but you know coach, he’s known my mom for years and he’s been to my soccer games, so you know that he knows Harrison look at him,” The two boys looked at Coach Boone and saw that he does remember Harrison. But he didn’t want to show it, he treated every new person just like everybody else, sure he was dating Zack’s mom on and off but he still treated Zack like everyone else.
Zack got captain because he’s a good player and everyone loves him and Erin and it was the team’s vote to elect him captain along with Erin. But Zack knew that Harrison was also back for Shawn, and he would do what ever it took to keep them apart.
Boone blew his whistle and everyone jogged over to him taking a knee, Zack and Erin took their places on either side of Boone, “Alright, this is a week of try outs and if you feel like you want to drop out at any time be my guest. We have won two state championships in a row and we didn’t get there by being lazy,” Boone continued his speech to the boys as Shawn and her friend Ashton walked up to the field and heard some the coach’s speech, they smiled at each other as they found a spot in the stands.
Shawn scanned the team and the new guys look for Zack and there he stood next to Boone with a white wife beater on and his black shorts along with his white socks covering his shin guards. She’ couldn’t help but smile at her best friend as he listened intently to his coach’s speech. If there’s one thing she learned to love about Zack is his passion for soccer, and that she was never to disturb him while he was training. She scanned the boys on the field and couldn’t help but notice a boy that looked all too familiar, she took a closer glance and saw that the curly haired boy with bright brown eyes was Harrison.
“There’s no way,” she said under her breath as she saw the boys break up and went into different groups and she saw that Harrison was in Zack’s group all she could do was watch as Harrison followed his group that followed Zack and he had that smirk on his face. She just couldn’t believe that her old crush was back and hopefully he’ll notice her this year.
Zack led his group over to the far side of the field and told them to spread out he looked at the group of boys and wanted to smile, some looked scared while others looked determined. He looked at one boy that had dirty blonde hair and brown eyes, his skin was a white as a ghost, and he walked up to him and asked, “What’s your name?”
“Jack Johnston,”
“Why do you look so scared?”
“Because I wanna make my dad proud of me,”
“Why isn’t he proud of you?”
“Because I’d rather be at home doing homework and playing video games,”
“And by joining the soccer team you want to make him proud?”
“Yes he’s into sports and I’m not I figure this way he will be proud of me since he looks down on me as if I’m a waste of his time,”
“I understand well Jack just do your best and we’ll see where this week takes you just hang in there,” Zack told him with a smile. He looked at the boys again and back up a bit to get a good look at them, “Alright we’re gonna start with some stretches then do some running drills,” Zack told them as he began to lead the stretches.
Shawn and Ashton watched as the boys started stretching then they went right into doing suicides as a whole group including Zack and Erin and of course Zack was ahead of everybody. Shawn couldn’t help but smile at Zack when it came to running he was always ahead of everyone he held the school record for fastest mile which no one has come to beat yet. They did the whole field and Zack didn’t even break a sweat after running the whole field twice. Once they were done with that the Erin announced that they were to do six sprints only instead of going the length of the field they would go the width. Also Boone would be timing them and to see how fast they could go and of course Zack was ahead by at least two sprints.
Most the boys were already getting tired but to Zack’s surprised he saw that Jack was doing better than he expected. Boone warned everyone that today they would be running and running only then tomorrow they would do some more leg work then next day they would work on passing, then the two days left they would try every one out on different positions on the field and see who makes the team and who doesn’t.
After the sprints Boone looked around and decided to give everyone a thirty minute water break. Everyone jogged over to the side lines and got their water bottles out and some laid down some we’re trying to catch their breaths all Zack and the rest of the team could do was smile. He took of his wife beater because he was getting hot then poured some water over his head and the water dripped down cooling his hot body he closed his eyes and sighed. When he opened them back up he looked up at the bleachers and saw Shawn he smiled and waved at his best friend she smiled and gave a wolf whistle like always and waved back laughing, he laughed as well.
“So have you told Shawn how you feel about her yet?” Erin asked as he took another swig of his water.
“No I haven’t I don’t know how she feels about me so I don’t want to rush into anything I don’t want to scare her you know,” He told him as he poured more water down his body.
“Come man, she’s in love with you as much as you are with her, all you have to do is say, ‘Hey Shawn I’m in love with you how about a date?’ That’s it man and you have her,”
“Yeah tell her I love her before I ask her out on date that’s always the right way to go,” He said with a smile as he picked up a ball with his foot and passed to his friend.
They passed the ball around for a few more minutes until Boone blew his whistle and told the boys to spilt up into their groups on either side of the field and that they were going to end the day with Indian Suicides. This was Zack’s favorite running exercise there would start off and the person in the back had to sprint up to the front and once that person was in the front the back person would follow and it would go on and on until the coach would say stop. Zack stood last in line waiting for the whistle with a big grin on his face, when the whistle started his group began to run and he jogged a few steps behind them then sprinted to the front.
Shawn didn’t like how hard Zack was running she knew he does it all the time but he never thought about how much his heart could take the doctors told him to take it easy and not to put too much strain on it. She knew that doctors couldn’t stop him from playing soccer or running but she kept reminding him to take his medicine every night for the past four years. She watched as they did his favorite running exercise with his group way ahead of the other. There were three things Zack loved most in the world running, soccer, and his writing, and she loved him for his passion for all three. She’s never seen his writing, but she knew that what ever he writes he was great at it.
When Boone blew his whistle after five Indian Suicides the boys came over and took a knee, “Alright that’s it for today good job for hanging in there and for those of you who wish to continue see you tomorrow, alright hit the showers,” Everyone got up and walked over to the side line. Shawn came down from the stands with Ashton who rushed over to Jon and jumped into his arms. Shawn laughed at her two friends as she walked over to Zack who was taking off his gear still shirtless.
“There he is the man of the hour,” She said coming up to him giving him a hug as he stood up. She never minded him being all sweaty she gotten used to it over the years.
“Hey you,” he said hugging her back pulling her in tight, after few more moments he let go of her.
“So are we still going to Jake’s?” she asked as he sat back down taking off his shin guards and cleats and putting them in his bag.
“Don’t we always after the first day of school, we’ve been going since we were in Kindergarten,” he said with a smile folding up his socks and putting them in his back followed by his guards and cleats. Then he pulled out a white t-shirt and a pair of socks and his shoes he wore earlier.
“True true, you’re still the fastest out here too,” she said with a smile as she zipped up his bag for him as he put his socks on then his shoes.
“Yeah well running five miles a day helps,” he said with a smile as he stood up and put on his shirt, after getting it on she handed him his soccer bag and he put his arm around her and they began walking off the field.
Harrison saw the two of them and smirked he was back and this time he would really fuck up Zack’s world. First he would take control of the soccer team, and then he would take Shawn away from him and turn her against him. He would get his revenge against Zack even if it meant that he would put him back in the hospital.
Zack and Shawn finally got to his car and he opened the door for her with a smile she got in and closed the door then leaned over to unlock his door. He smiled and climbed in tossing his bag in the back along with Shawn’s. He started the car and they put on their seat belts and drove out of the school’s parking lot on their way to their favorite after school hang out. Little did they know that their world would come crashing down within just weeks.
