Worth the Wait
Chapter Two
Logan smiled as he said goodnight to his friends and they went into their rooms for the rest of the night. Logan waited till all their doors had clicked shut and ran into his room shutting and locking the door behind him. Finally he would get his first chance to scout Las Vegas for clues on his present case for the FBI. Of course solving the case tonight was out of the question; he just needed to keep his cover his job in this case under wraps. Going to his closet he opened it and pulled down the ironing board to reveal a black bag. He was going to really have to thank Max for this one.
Max was his best friend in training. He was the only one that knew about him being on this case and wanted to get in on a piece of the action since he was a partner for the case before he got injured. That didn’t mean he couldn’t handle the technical stuff such as booking plane tickets, getting his equipment from place to place, and being support when Logan needed it. He found it a lot of fun helping his friend out. Attaching his headpiece to his ear and making sure the microphone was positioned correctly he tapped on it and said in a deep voice, “Duty calls.” He expected Max to answer back in at least 10- 15 minutes. So while he waited he stripped out of his civilian clothing and donned the skin of the black body suit with its equipment. With his suit was a mask to keep his face hidden in case he ran into trouble and needed to do hand to hand combat without anyone seeing his face.
“Logan, I’m glad you were able to find all of your stuff.” Max said as Logan began climb out the window and scale the building to get to the roof. “I can’t do this without you.” He answered back. As he scaled the building he had little difficulty. The building was glass so the using the heavy suction cups was all Logan really needed. When he got to the top he over looked the area making small measurements in his head.
“So which building do you think they’ll hit first?” Max asked as he listened to Logan’s breathing through his earpiece. Max Farerra was sitting in his office. He had become a private airline pilot, as well as FBI personnel on the injured list, and was a stand by pilot of the Air Force in case things got out of hand. Logan was in the same league as Max but didn’t feel it was necessary to tell everyone that he was also an Air Force pilot but only on stand by. They’d think he was a work freak or just looking for some way to get killed.
“I don’t know. It could be any casino. I don’t know if it will be all at once if it will be a chain. I just don’t know but, I am keeping my eyes peeled and my ears open. One thing I am curious about is how they’re going to get out of Dodge with all that money. I mean each casino has to have at least 50 million inside each vault. Plus my guess is that they’ll hit the Big 10 casino’s and well that’s just a lot of money to be hauling around.” Logan had a lot to figure out in a week. At least he knew what day everything was going to happen. Saturday night was going to be the night he had to be prepared for. He some how had to plant camera’s in all 10 casino’s he deemed as targets and plant mic's as well. How he was going to do that was complicated but not impossible.
“Hey Max, are you able to tap into the surveillance camera’s in the casino’s.” Logan hoped so but he most likely knew what the answer would be.
“Nope, they don’t use internet and it’s too many firewalls even for me. Just use those nano cameras that you have. You just throw them into the corner of a wall and it sticks. Why can’t you just do that?” Max shook his head. Logan knew what the options were all ready. For some odd reason he didn’t trust the newer nano gadgets that he had at his disposal.
Logan didn’t answer right away. He jumped down from his hotel and spread his arms letting his flying squirrel glider catch the wind and he glided to the closest casino. Upon reaching it he finally answered, “I don’t trust some of the nano stuff. The smaller things are, the more fragile they are, and thus easier to brake.” Max just rolled his eyes.
“Just set the magnets you big baby so I can get the position of the safe. I need sleep.” One would think locating the safe would be easy but with a casino that was supposedly a vault to those who intended to rob it that could prove a problem. That was really the only thing Logan need to have all the info he needed. They had gotten the blueprints a long time ago but a casino could put a safe anywhere; the Presidents office, the treasury room, behind the decoy vault…there were many places. Casinos’ don’t have its safe in the open. For example when someone hits the jackpot and wins a large sum of money they don’t take you to the same place where they cash out people with small amounts of money. They take you to a room. Thus the room that leads to the vault. It’s the closest someone without intentions or knowledge of why they were brought to a room besides obvious reasons can get to the vault. While Logan’s poker skills were flawless he couldn’t win at every casino to be able to get a chance to snoop around. It would raise too much suspicion. So what they did was use magnets to detect the biggest mass of steel in the casino. Each vault contains an amount of steel, so whenever you get a block of steel the size of a cave you have a vault. Logan finished placing the magnets around the first building and glided to the next building.
“Uh oh, Logan I have two huge masses in that building. What do you think it is?” Max said. Logan could hear clicking in the background knowing that it was just a computer keyboard. Thinking for a second he rolled his eyes.
“What does each casino have Max?” Logan asked
“I dunno what?” Logan groaned. In each casino there were two safes one for small timers one for the big winners. Bigger heavier safe’s offered more protection so they usually were made the big safe while smaller safe was for smaller cash out purposes.
“Are the dimensions for each mass different?” Logan growled
“Yea.”
Then the one with the bigger mass is the safe.” Logan said and went about planting the second set of magnets. Logan would get the measurements when he got back to the hotel on his laptop and be able to look over blue prints to determine the exact location of the safe.
Logan continued setting the magnets on each building checking different details of each roof. Some had weird doors into the casino such as a trap door type or a hull type covering that would be on a tank. Logan made sure to make a mental note and then moved on. When he was finally finished he rappelled down to the ground and put on civilian clothing. Calling a taxi he rode back to his hotel. As he got out of the cab he felt his phone vibrate and frowned. Who would be calling him at this hour? He pulled out the phone to see Max’s name on the caller ID. Rolling his eyes he answered it.
“What now? I thought you went to bed.” Logan said.
“Well you only gave me 9 buildings and I thought you said they were going to hit the Big 10. Did you miss one or is it just me?” Max asked. This was a good chance to tease Logan since he never once made a mistake.
“No I didn’t miss one. I’m staying at that casino or did you forget? Anyway did you get everything I need to my laptop?” Logan asked as he got into elevator and shifted his bag to the other shoulder.
“Yes you ass, I did. It’s encrypted and it’s got a password only you can figure out unless you have someone who has stalked you since you were born. Call me tomorrow when you get the chance and tell me what you figured out. See ya.” Max hung up the phone. He didn’t get a chance to tease Logan like he thought he would but it should have been expected. Logan hadn’t made a mistake since a mission 3 years ago when he lost his two partners. It was a mistake on his part that anyone could have made but Logan had been hard on himself and didn’t allow mistakes. What Logan needed was a companion but with the problem that was giving him Max knew that wouldn’t happen anytime soon.
An hour and a half later Logan was lying on his bed with a towel around his waist and was booting up his laptop. He accessed the file Max had sent him. The password application came up and the hint was: The giver of the ring around your neck… Logan knew who it was. The hint meant his deceased fiancée, Angel. She was the only woman he was able to forget about Rachel with. She was truly his everything. She had died giving birth to their son 3 years ago around the same time he lost both his partners. He didn’t talk about her much or the accident because that was when he lost a huge chunk of his world. The only thing he had left was his friends and his job. Max said he worked too much and that it wasn’t going to fill the void. Logan knew he was probably right but never acknowledged it. The only thing he knew was that if he lost Rachel he would lose his reason for life.
Typing in the password the screen uploaded the coordinates of the mass that Max found and matched it with the blue prints of each building. Recording each building’s safe location in his palm pilot he finished up his work and turned off his laptop. Putting it back in its’ bag he changed into some night pants he climbed into bed, turned off the lamp, and went to sleep.
