Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Stepping out of the taxi that had taken me the rest of the way from the train station to my house, I paid the driver and watched him drive away before turning and making my way towards the front door. As I reached for the door knob the door was yanked open and I was caught up in fierce bear hug. "Hi Mom," I wheezed out.
"Honey, I got your message, what happened?" she asked as she released me.
"How'd you know?"
"What, that something's wrong?" Mom smiled, "Alex, you're my little boy, I'll always be able to tell when you're upset about something."
I started to smile but a cold chill ran down my spine and I suddenly felt like I was being watched, I glanced around but I didn't see anyone nearby. "Mom, um, let's go inside and I'll explain everything to you," I said, ushering her back into the house before closing and locking the door behind us.

"I think he sensed us."
"Nonsense, we're cloaked so the humans can't see us."
"Maybe, but he's special, he's one of the -"
"Silence you fool, you know we are not allowed to speak of them!"
"I am sorry, I spoke out of turn."
"Now, back to the mission, since none of the humans we sent could do it we will have to kill this one ourselves."
"When do we strike?"
"Tonight, while he sleeps."

I'd just finished telling Mom everything, how I'd been unknowingly having premonitions since I was a kid, about how I saw Jason die in a vision before it even happened and even about the vision that showed me being killed. Now she was just sitting there staring blankly into her tea cup, hoping it would tell her if I was insane or not, I guess.
"Mom, please say something," I begged.
She was silent for a beat and then, "Your Father was the same way, he'd known I was pregnant with your brother before I even found out, he knew when you were coming too."
I was shocked, to say the least, "So, is this some kind of genetic thing or something?"
"Your Father told me that he only got his powers after your Grandfather passed away and he figured it would be passed down to his son once he died."
"But Kevin was born first, shouldn't he be the one with the visions?" I asked.
"Well, you do look just like your Father and he looked just like his Father, so maybe you got the powers because you look like your Father." she shrugged.
"Well if that's the case then it's a really stupid fucking way to hand out powers."
"Alex, language," Mom scolded.
"Mom, I'm twenty one and besides you don't know what it's like having what feels like a million white hot pokers stabbing into your brain and spine."
She stood with a sigh and leaned over to give me a hug, as she pulled back she looked me up and down with a frown, "Honey, you look like you haven't eaten in ages, let me fix you some dinner."
I glanced over at the clock on the wall and saw that it was almost 8:30pm, so much had happened in such a small amount of time. I laid my head down on the kitchen table and closed my eyes, just listening to Mom bustle around the kitchen. She started humming a song that was vaguely familiar and before I knew it I was dozing lightly, only waking up when she set a plate of fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes and cornbread down in front of me.
"The cobbler's cooling so we'll have some after dinner, Mr. Fredricks from next door brought me a basket of gorgeous peaches yesterday and I was just wondering what I was going to do with them all." Mom said as she sat to eat.
As we ate we talked about multiple topics like how Kevin and his wife, Joanna, were expecting twins and how Mom's latest line of pottery was selling like hot cakes on her online store, she even asked me if I enjoyed the college I'd been going to in Atlanta.
"Yeah, the college was great and the classes were really interesting but I can't go back, not after what happened," I explained, staring at my plate as I played with what was left of my food.
She gave me a soft sad smile before getting up to grab the mostly cooled cobbler, "How about something sweet to make you feel better?"
"No thanks Mom, I'm stuffed, I think I'll just head up to my room and try to get some sleep," I stood and gave her a small goodnight peck on the cheek before grabbing my duffel bag and heading upstairs.

Author's Note: Blargh, boring chapter. I promise it gets a bit more interesting in the next chapter.
