Chapter 3 - Fruition

Chapter 3 - Fruition

For Luke, these last two months had been the hardest two months of his life. He felt so excited that he might burst, but he had to keep calm and cool. At last, everything at the new guest house was finally wrapping up. The interior designer that he had picked was putting the finishing touches on the place, he had hired lock smiths to put locks both on the inside and outside of all of the windows, and electricians that wired a security system that would sense if one of the windows or doors were so much as open a hair.

Marni’s new clothes were all hanging up in her closet, and some of his hanging in its twin. He had made sure that every touch, every tiniest detail in the house was as she would have made it herself and he was quite pleased with his effort. The last, of course, was to get her into the house. This would be a trickier plan but he had already thought of how it would work.

Marni was accustomed, especially now that her husband was away so often, to take long walks in the evening around the neighborhood. Sometimes, he had noticed, rather than walking she would swing on the swing-set in her back yard. On one of these evenings, he would take her. Luke would walk up to her, in plain daylight, greet her, sit down, then push a towel soaked with chloroform up against her nose until she passed out. Getting her into the back of his SUV would be trickier, he noted to himself, but his neighbors were known for not being nosey. It will work, he thought to himself, it must.

Marni had been making plans, at long last, to leave her husband. She would stay with her Aunt in Rhode Island for a while, until she had enough money to find her own place. Hannah was young enough to be able to adapt to a new school without much difficulty, and it would be good to get away from the stress of being around a father who was supposed to be there but never was. All that was left to do was pack her bags, have her lawyer draw up some divorce papers, and leave. Hannah would be unhappy at first, but she would grow to understand. Marni hoped she would, anyway.

For whatever reason, she had started to feel a nagging sense of unease in her daily life. It was like someone was looking over her shoulder. For the most part she accounted this feeling to what was going on with Greg, but even as she finalized her plans to get away the feeling seemed only to increase. It was troubling.

Her neighbors had stopped being friendly with her once she had started having loud arguments with her husband, and she couldn’t help feeling like a sort of pariah. She sometimes thought that her community had more in common with Stepford than she thought was entirely necessary, and she never did fit in with all of that monotony.

It will all be for the best, she told herself firmly, Hannah and I will make a better life, away from here, somewhere better for both of us.

She sat outside, on one of the swings, crying softly. Luke’s heart went out to her, but he thrilled at it at the same time. All of his preparations were complete. Now would come the conclusion of all of his careful plans…

Marni looked up from her tissue to notice her neighbor, Luke (she thought that was his name) standing in front of her looking awkward and hesitant. He had the grimy look of one who has spent all day in a garden, complete with a damp towel hanging out the back of his pants. She quickly dabbed away the last of her tears and stood up, the swing set jingling behind her as she lifted her weight away. “Can I help you with something?” she asked him, when he did not speak first.

“W-w-ell,” he started, as if finally realizing that he was speaking to her, “well, ma’am, to tell you the truth, I saw you sitting there by yourself and felt the need to come over. I heard about the problems you’ve been having with your husband and I wanted to say that he’s a fool. Please, please pardon the interruption but I’m a sucker for a crying woman… couldn’t just leave you there alone,” he finished finally.

Marni was stunned. She had no idea that her problems were so transparent. She couldn’t remember exchanging more than a few words with this man, never the less speaking of such things with him before. The neighborhood must be having a field-day with my marriage, she thought sadly and wryly at the same time. “Thanks,” she said, sniffing away some last remnants of tears. “It’s been hard, of course, but it’s getting easier to deal with now that I’ve made my decision to leave here.” Marni paused for a few seconds. “Heck, I don’t even know why I’m telling you this. Thank you for your concern, really, but I should be getting inside. Hannah is going to bed soon and she’ll miss me when I’m not there to tuck her in.”

“I understand,” he said, “I certainly don’t want to keep you from her. It’s a shame I didn’t know you better.” He paused, as if uncertain; then he continued. “May I give you a goodbye hug, then?”

Marni laughed, “Of course. What woman would begrudge a hug?” She stepped into his arms and wrapped herself around him. She felt him fumble with something at the back of his pants and then he pressed a foul smelling piece of cloth against her nose and mouth, crushing her against him. Then she fainted.

Luke’s adrenaline level was about to shoot through the roof. What an exhilarating thing this was! She had struggled at first, of course, but once she had gotten a few whiffs of the towel she was out, flopping into him like a giant, beautiful doll. He scooped her up and walked quickly toward his car—

“Mommy?” he heard from somewhere. He froze. “Mommy? Where are you? Are you alright?” Luke heard a screen door open and close, then creaking footsteps leading into his line of sight. It was Hannah, Marni had said that she would come looking for her. Oh God oh God oh God oh God… was echoing through his head like a litany. He made a split decision and turned, facing the child, her limp mother in his arms.

“Hi,” he said, lamely, “your mom and I were chatting and she fainted. I didn’t realize you were in the house so I was going to take her to the hospital myself…” he trailed off, studying her reaction.

“You’re the neighbor from across the street, right?” she said, finally. “I’ve seen you watching the house sometimes.”

“Well, hey, I’m still going to take your mom to the hospital, so do you want to come with me? We can leave a note for your dad and take some stuff with us in case your mom needs to stay over. How does that sound?”

“Well…” she said, considering, “I suppose that would be alright. You’re not exactly a stranger, are you? And if my mom knows you… Well, I’d better go inside and grab some things. You’d better put her in your car, I’ll be down in a minute.”

“You know what you’re going to write to your dad?”

“I’ll just let him know where we’re going.”

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, I mean, he might get worried otherwise. Just let him know that you two had to leave and that you’ll call him later. I promise I’ll get you to a phone so you can do that, okay?” Luke smiled at her, hoping she would take his suggestion.

Hannah smiled back, “Good idea! I wouldn’t want him to run around like crazy, worrying about her, I mean it’s probably nothing anyway, right?”

“Right,” he said. “I’ll meet you over by the car, k? Oh! And don’t forget to pack some stuff for your mom!”

***

Luke carefully carried the limp woman in his arms over to his open car. Putting her inside the backseat he strapped her in with the middle seatbelt and took out the loaded syringe in his pocket. Moving the sleeve of her short sleeved shirt he inserted the needle and pressed in the plunger, then after removing the needle hit the injected spot a couple times. The valium would keep her calm and sleepy for the car ride and that way she wouldn’t give him much trouble and worry Hannah too much.

He got into the car and waited for Hannah to come back. During that time he contemplated what he should do with her. He thought that if he put her in the back seat with her mother that she would be alright once Marni started to rouse, but he didn’t want to take any chances. No, he would have to sedate her and then bind and gag her. Luckily he had more such needles in his pocket and in his glove compartment. He would put her in the back seat with her mother and then as he was buckling her in he would slide the chloroform cloth out of his pocket and knock her out the same way he did her mother. He would drive a little ways and then move her into the trunk, giving her a smaller dose of the valium and then tie her up.

As he saw Hannah returning in his rearview mirror, he realized with some glee that he would have to pick out some little girl’s clothing as well. This really will be fun, he thought to himself, fighting the adrenaline and anticipation. Yes, yes it would be.
