Sneaking: Erynh- 0001
Chapter One
-Sneaking-
~Erynh~
“Where are you?!”
My sister snarling in my brain made me stumble as I loped up the stairs leading to the fifth floor of the Syllvyr Den. My yelp of alarm was loud enough that when I paused to regain my balance and my breath, I heard the soft tread of leather boots and realized a patrolling guard must have heard my cry. Stifling a gasp, I ducked through one of the archways and hid behind the tall, ivory pillar, squeezing myself tightly into the shadowy corner. My charcoal gray tunic and trews helped to hide me, and my bare feet padded softly upon the icy, stone floor.
“Where are you?!”
“Hang on a second!”
I didn’t hold my breath- any forest beast would hear the speeding thud of a breath-deprived heart- but kept myself as still as possible. My scent was all over the corridors of the Den, but the guards wouldn’t be alerted by something so insignificant. It wasn’t the scent, it was the air. The guards would feel the shifts in the air currents, know I hid behind the pillar… unless I could still the thundering of my pulse.
“What’s going on?”
“Give me a second,” I told my sister, and forced my body to relax. I was predator, I would not quake and tremble like a frightened rabbit hunted by the hounds. Scruffing my dark brown hair, I closed my eyes and waited with silent prayers as the Den guards’ footsteps padded on by my hiding place and turned a corner- luckily not the corner I needed to turn myself.
“Coming now?”
“Aye-yuh,” I replied silently, and slipped on down the corridor towards the Hall of the Silver Orb.
