CHAPTER 3:
(11 years later)
“Alright girls, that’s it! Keep up the pace!”
The place was a training ranch for girls wishing to go professional in horse riding. Travel in the future was by electric car. Horses were only ridden as sport, and nothing more. However, the horses were still loved; especially by one particular girl riding amongst the many others.
The girl’s height was difficult to determine as she rode atop a beautiful chestnut mare, though she didn’t look to be any higher then 5’5.” She was a fairly slim girl with peach skin. Her curly brown hair was protected underneath a black helmet, though some of it stuck out in a long pony that reached just a little past her shoulders. Her sparkling blue eyes shined brightly, making them visible to any eye.
As she rode by the constructor lady, the constructor shouted, “Looking good Michelle, keep it up!”
Michelle smiled as she patted her horse’s side. They were coming to their next jump; a three barred fence. Michelle gave her horse the correct notions, and the horse easily jumped the fence as if it were child’s play.
“Alright ladies,” the constructor smiles, “That’s it for today. Let the horses have a rest.”
“Whoa,” Michelle pulls on her horse’s reins softly, “Easy boy.”
Once she got her horse to slow down, Michelle walked it towards a large barn. She slowly pushes herself off the horse, and easily steps to the ground. She pats the horse’s neck and whispers, “Good boy, Milky.”
Milky gave off a sharp neigh, as if knowing he had done a job well done.
As Michelle guided Milky into the barn, and moved him into his own protective den, another girl came hopping towards Michelle. She wore a similar riding outfit, but hers looked more fancy, “Hey Michelle, great riding today.”
“Oh,” Michelle turned to the blonde girl, “Thanks Claire.”
“Of course,” Claire pushes back her bangs, “My riding was absolute perfection today. I think I did an outstanding job!”
“Um sure,” Michelle nods, “You were good too.”
“Oh don’t listen to her Michelle,” comes up another girl with dark bluish hair, “She’s just jealous of you’re amazing riding skills!”
“Humph,” Claire crosses her arms and raises her nose, “I don’t know if you should be talking, Robin. You’re horse-riding skills suck!”
“Hell even I knew that,” Robin laughs, “But Michelle here kicks ass on a horse. So, if I were you, I’d stop acting all high and mighty, for even you need practice, Princess.”
With this said, Claire turned and stormed off.
Michelle joined Robin in a short laugh. “Thanks Robin.”
“No problem Michelle,” Robin hugs her friend, “But you gotta start fighting for yourself. I wont’ always be there to save your butt.”
“I know, I know,” Michelle giggles, “You won’t let me forget.”
“So anyway,” Robin brushes back her blue bangs, “I was wondering if you’d like to do anything fun today? I have nothing to do and well…”
“I’d love to Robin,” Michelle smiles, “But my parents come home today.”
“Oh that’s right,” Robin snickers, “From their special anniversary. Well then, I guess I’ll head on home.”
Michelle heads out of the barn with Robin. She felt sorry, but her parents had been gone for a few days now. She couldn’t wait for them to get home.
“Oh Michelle,” the conductor slowly walks up; a frown is upon her face, “Michelle I must have a word with you.”
Michelle stood confused. She only nods as she follows her conductor towards the main office at the ranch.
--
Once the two are inside the office, Michelle removes her racing hat before taking a seat. She stares worriedly up at her conductor. “What’s going on, Ms. Ledford?”
“Michelle,” Ms. Ledford takes a seat next to Michelle, “This is hard for me to say. You’re—parents were—they were in an accident, Michelle.”
Her eyes widened; her fears were rising. “What?”
“They were in a car accident, and were taken to Purple County Hospital, Michelle. I’ve been asked to take you there.”
--
Michelle cried the whole way to the hospital. The news was grim, and Michelle let her tears flow wildly. “How—how could this happen? Why did this have to happen, God, why?”
Once Michelle was driven to the hospital, she and Ms. Ledford entered in search of Chief Dagwood, who had been on the scene. They soon found him.
He stared down at poor Michelle, and shook his head. “Michelle, I’m terribly sorry, but…”
“Where are they,” Michelle cuts Chief Dagwood off, “Where’s my mom, and my dad?”
Chief Dagwood stares sadly at young Michelle. She was only seventeen; the poor thing. “Your mother,” Chief Dagwood began, “Is in a coma. The doctor’s are unsure if she’ll make it,” Chief Dagwood went on, even though Michelle was loudly crying, and sniffling, “And your father is—is…” Chief Dagwood could see fear rising in Michelle’s blue eyes. “I’m sorry Michelle, but your father did not make it.”
She broke out. Michelle let her cries grow as she sank to the floor. She curled up; gave her body a hug, and she even began to shiver. She was heaving as her warm tears dripped to the floor. A nurse ran over to bend beside her, and give her comfort. Some of the ill people in the hospital gave her displeased looks. Others felt sorry for the girl.
How—how can one day that began as splendor end in such sorrow? How could anybody have such rotten luck? Poor Michelle; she now felt empty.
--
“Well,” spoke an officer at Chief Dagwood, “How’s the poor darling doing?”
Chief Dagwood wipes his brow with a tissue before tossing it into a trash bin. “How the hell do you think she’s feeling? The poor girl is miserable and heartbroken.”
The other officer gave his bottom lip a bite. He tried hard not to displease the chief, but another question came to his mind. “Chief,” the officer began, “What’s going to happen to her now? Who is she going to stay with? We don’t know if the parents have any living family…”
Rubbing his eyes, Chief Dagwood slowly raises his head at the officer. The officer freezes, hoping he had not angered Chief Dagwood, but Chief Dagwood nodded his head at the officer, understanding the situation completely. “Well,” Chief Dagwood slowly stands to his feet, “There may be one person who just might take her in. It’ll be risky asking the man, but it’s the only choice we’ve got.”
--
Entering his office back at the station, Chief Dagwood rushed over to his desk and plopped down in his comfy chair. He quickly pulls open his desk, and hurriedly searches through it. He grumbles at how messy his desk, and drawers were. He promised to get them clean one of these days, but today wasn’t that day. After a while, Chief Dagwood came across what he was looking for. It was a business card with the words OOP of Japan on it. Chief Dagwood gives the card a nod before picking up his gray telephone. He begins to dial a number on the card, and sets the receiver to his ear.
After a few rings, the ringing finally ceases and a voice picks up. “OOP. This is Officer Sashirou speaking.”
“Hello, this is Officer Dagwood of the American patrol officers,” Chief Dagwood speaks.
“Hello Officer Dagwood,” speaks this Officer Sashirou, “What can I do for you?”
“I am calling in search for an Officer Wakehiko,” Chief Dagwood speaks, “Is he available?”
There was a long pause before someone Officer Sashirou speaks again, “I’m terribly sorry, but Officer Wakehiko is dead.”
Chief Dagwood nearly drops his phone, but he manages not to. He is a tad shaky at hearing his good friend was dead. “Oh, I’m terribly sorry to hear that,” Officer Dagwood frowns, “Well then, you wouldn’t happen to know an officer by the name of Endo, would you?”
“As a matter of fact yes,” spoke Officer Sashirou, “He’s one of my top officers.”
Chief Dagwood sighed in relief. The boy was still alive. He was working as an officer, just like Chief’s friend, Officer Wakehiko, had hoped for. “Perfect! Is he available to chat? I have some news that might just interest him.”
“Yes sir, please hold a moment and I’ll fetch him for you.”
Chief Dagwood waited patiently to hear the voice of the boy. He waited, and waited until finally a handsome voice was heard. “Officer Endo speaking. Who’s this?”
“Officer Endo,” Chief Dagwood speaks slowly, “I am Officer Dagwood, Chief of the American patrol officers in Connecticut. I have some news that might just interest you.”
