But He's My Brother
*Author's Note* K, if you're still reading I know there's a lot of music lyrics in this story. That's because music is such apart of me, and so is writing, that I wanted to have a collaboration of the two. So most of the songs are songs I liked when I started writing this about a year ago.
Chapter 3
But He's My Brother
...oh and yes I know "ho-osity" is not a word.
The stale air jolts once more as he takes a step towards her and looks away. Bethany looks up at him, looking away at her, looking up at him. She can hear the slow steady pace of her heart pounding silently in her ear. "What are you doing-."
"I wanted to come talk to you. I said I still wanted to be friends."
Bethany fingers him to come closer to her; he does, until her mouth is at his ear. "You can take your so-called friendship and shove it up your ass." She stands up and tugs her favorite skirt down with the patch emblem that says: Life is like a dick. When it gets hard, fuck it.
Dana is actually surprised by the outburst. "You're gonna act like a child now and run away?" His hand rests softly on top of hers.
Bethany snorts remembering not to long ago Dana had walked away from their relationship for no reason at all. "You're such a coward." She snatches her hand back as if she suddenly found out his hand had herpes. "You don't even exist to me anymore."
"Ay yo, Bethany!" Darion pokes his head back into the kitchen. "Get out here! The crowds getting restless."
"Restless? I never thought you could use a word over five letters long." She bumps pass Dana realizing that she is being somewhat childish now. She follows Darion out of the kitchen and out into the backyard. Most of the party is crowded around the stage, which is not doing much for her nervousness.
She walks over to the stage and stands in front of the band; Jesse included. A thousand butterflies are in her stomach. She can feel her brother's breath on the back of her neck; he is so close. She thinks of the almost moment they had in the kitchen and what it would have been like if they did...She shakes the last minute thoughts away. "But he's my brother." She whispers to herself when she feels a hand gently touch her shoulder.
"It's okay. Just breathe."
Breathe. Right. How can she breathe when she had just lost the function to do so with him just standing next to her. On top of it, Dana is looking straight at her, causing a double case of the Julian Effect. Only in this case it is in a gouge his eyes out and put them in Storm's bed kind of way.
Gene is on the drums, Price is on the keyboard, Jason is on the guitar, Darion is on the bass guiter, and Jesse as lead guitarist all begin an hard rock rift behind her as Bethany opens her mouth to sing:
Love is running you down with my car
Still I can never get to you
As you tumble beneath the wheel
I see the best looking at you
Love is getting the chance to see the knife go through
You're gone from my life
But still here you are
It's all right
It's okay
I never mattered anyway
Bethany can feel her palms sweating and her heart is racing like a hummingbird's. After a drunk ovation and a few lit lighters the band takes a break, but are quickly rushed to do their next and last set before they mingle in with the party and the dj takes over. The first song, of which was recently written by Jesse over the fifteen minute break; who was left thinking of his unsettled thoughts about what happened in the kitchen and his girlfriend going with his little sisters ex-boyfriend. The band reviews the beat only once before the actual performance of the song. Bethany still has the lyrics in front of her.
I loved you,
But you kept driving the knife through.
I love you!
Have a nice day,
And fuck you too!
I'm loving you!
Yes her,
Something that's not easy to do.
Take the pain away.
Drowning in her eyes;
Baby Blue.
Yes, I'm loving again,
Because of her not you.
I died!
Loved you too hard is what they say.
I die!
My fucking attachments drove me insane.
I'm dying,
With her!
Without her yellow sunrise washing over me,
Because the girl in white has no clue.
Yes, I'm dying again,
Because of her not you.
Jesse ends with an unbelievable guitar solo that has the crowd roaring for more. They breakdown their equipment and slowly begin to mingle in with the party. Bethany stands over by the beer keg looking for Jesse. When she sees him engulfed in a crowd of groupies she fills her cup to the brim. She stands their silently not knowing what to do when an, "Ay yo!" comes from the bubbling crowd. Darion is sloshed from the crowd in front of her.
Bethany can feel her eyes rolling to the back of her head. Where was Jesse when you need him? Darion advances towards her. "Aw, come on. Don't be shy."
"I am so sick of this." She turns to walks away, but Darion grabs her arm.
"Ay yo, Bethany! It's like that yo."
Bethany swings around and "accidently" hits Darion in the throat, where his adam's apple is, cutting off his air supply for moments that seem like enternity to him. Bethany only continues to walk away in the direction of the pool.
Dario crouches over the almost empty beer can. "I see how you are! It's alright!"
"It's called karma." She smiles and turns around, bumping into Storm and Dana.
"Watch it!"
Bethany does not even look up. "It's not my fault you're five feet tall and six feet wide."
Storm's face turns crimson red. She grabs Bethany and pushes her back into the freezing water. Storm keels over with laughter. Dana only stands their silently beside her trying to avoid her gaze more than anything. She can feel the entire party turn to look at her not sure if the whole incident was an accident or not. She swims to the ladder at the side of the pool and slowly climbs out. Her clothes are clinging onto her skin and she looks identical to some kind of wet rodent.
"What the fuck is wrong with you!" A crowd around the small group forms quickly. Bethany is still in disbelief that even when you're a senior in high school you can still not be completely mature.
"I already said you didn't know who you were fucking with." The enormous smile plastered across Storm's somehow seems to grow bigger with each passing second.
Bethany's anger boils over into one enormous smack into Storm's face, sending her flying into the pool. "And I said girls like you need to be talk a lesson! Now stay down there and think about what I've said!"
The crowd has been silent up until now. The quiet is broken by the sound of someone puking in the pool before everyone shrugs and the party returns to normal, like nothing ever happened. Dana is still standing in front of her. She looks up at him, wondering if she should throw him into the pool along with his tramp.
"Bethany I-"
Bethany raises her hand to his face. "Stop. Trust me. I'm over it and you."
"I'm sorry I hurt you."
Bethany only rolls her eyes in reply as she watches Storm doggy paddle her way to the side of the wall of the pool. Her thoughts wonder to how you can just change your mind and stop having feelings for someone, when Jason walks up behind her and puts his arm around her shoulder.
"Can I talk to you alone, Bethany?"
"Yeah." They both walk through the back door and through the kitchen. They rest on the couch in the living room. "So, what did you want to talk about?" Bethany's body is shaking from the warm air suddnely pressing against her freezing body. Her hair is plastered against her cheeks.
Jason takes his jacket and wraps it around her shoulders. "I heard you broke up with your boyfriend."
Bethany shakes her head. "No. He broke up with me."
"That's good."
"What?"
"I don't mean good. I mean-."
"What?" Bethany is on the verge of standing up and leaving the conversation before he digs an even deeper canyon.
"Are you busy this Friday?"
Bethany bites her lower lip and tugs at her ear. "No. Why?"
"You want go out with me?"
"Maybe."
"Maybe? What is that supposed to mean?"
"Jesse told me to stay away from you. I've never not listened to him." He only stares back at her before kissing softly on the lips. "Was that supposed to convince me?"
"I guess not."
"What time are you picking me up?"
Bethany asks when Jesse comes drunkenly clamouring down the stairs with a red head attached to his arm. Jason nor Bethany do not move from their positions. Bethany looks at the drunken couple walking down the stairs. " Amirah?" The girl looks up to Bethany. "What the fuck are you doing?" Bethany has known Amirah as long as she has known Dana. She is fifteen years old with long red hair down hair back. Bethany has always defended her despite her obvious ho-osity and want of her brother. Well, tonight she finally got him.
"What do you mean?" Her and Jesse start rolling with laughter as if she has just told a joke only they understand. With every breath of laughter her head finds it's way onto Jesse's chest.
"Is that my brother standing next to you?"
"Yes."
"What the fuck are you doing?" Bethany jumps up from her seat. "You're my best friend. You can not fuck my brother!"
Jesse wobbles over beside Bethany. He reeks of beer. "It's cool Bethany. Once you get drunk enough and turn out the light all of you look the same anyway. Even you're wet for me."
"Ugh!" Bethany pushes pass both of them and up to her room, locking the door behind her. After all that has happened tonight there is still just one person she can think about, but that was something that is due to change quickly.
She throws in Fefe Dobson's "Revolution Song" into her stereo and cranks up the volume, as she flops backward on the bed and softly sings along.
In my dream
I break the chains that hold this place together
But in my dream
The consequences would be so much better
Than they are
Cause beyond the walls that hold us here
Are skies that stretch across the atmosphere
Oh a revolution is near!
In my room
I hear the echoes of a recent battle
Lost and Wounded
As defeated cries begin to settle
For the night
But the words you used to hurt me now
Only seem to make me strong somehow
Oh a revolution is now!
And the days will get warmer
And I'll lay down my armor
Together we can fight this feeling!
And the demons that stalk us
Will eventually turn to dust
Together we can start this healing.
Together we can start this healing
Together we can fight this feeling!
A revolution is here.
The song fades, but the thoughts still linger in Bethany's head. Dana dumping her and hurting her had only made her stronger. And Jesse...Jesse was her brother. Bethany has barely gotten her last thought completely out when a brash knock sounds at the door. She walks over to the door and opens it a crack. "What?"
Jesse manages to poke his head through. "Can I come in?"
Bethany walks back over to her bed and Jesse comes into sit beside her. "What is it?"
"Can't I come and talk with my baby sister?"
Bethany's eyebrow raises. "No. You want me out of your life, remember?" Bethany racks her brain. Jesse was getting kind of close and he is known for getting touchy and *cough* when he gets this way. She just did not want him, or her for that matter, regretting the now, tomorrow.
"Oh Bethany. Bethany. You know how that old saying goes." He swats at her face with his hand.
"No, I don't. How does it go?"
Jesse leans into her and kisses her tenderly on the mouth. "If you can't beat it. Fuck it."
