The House That Rae Built
"Ya'll better get to the house." Rachel said to Renee as she descended the ladder from the hay loft. She wore her traditional "Boss Hogg" outfit minus the hat. Rachel hated hats. She was followed by James and Roger. Rachel lit a cigar. The cigar's strong peach scent filtered through the barn.
"Can't I stay?" Renee asked. She hated leaving. She wanted to be in on all the jokes and stories that Rachel, James and Roger told.
"No. If the police show up and you're here, they'll take you with us. They won't be afraid to. I'm not about to drag you down with me." Rachel said after taking a long draw from her cigar and slowly blowing a line smoke from her mouth.
"But we're family. We're supposed to stick together." Renee said.
"Family means looking out for each other. If you get caught with us, it'll go straight on your permanent record. I don't want that happening." Rachel raised her voice.
"What's the difference if you, RoRo and Jam get caught with 'shine and if I get caught with you guys?" Renee asked, heatedly.
"The difference is, we're 23, 58 and 59! We've lived our lives! You're 16! You've got your entire life ahead of you!" Rachel said.
"Well, you're only seven years older than me! We so close to the same age!" Renee cried.
"Renee, for the love of God, I run moonshine! I deal with lowlifes! I deal with these people who seem to have it all but they're out doing things that they shouldn't! I don't want you leading the same life as me and dealing with the same people I deal with!" Rachel responded.
"You're one of those people that you're talking about." Renee stated.
"What is THAT suppose to mean?" Rachel asked with an eyebrow raised.
"You drive a 1970 Cadillac De Ville, you've got your fancy suits with your fancy shoes, you've got a good home and you've got two men that are crazy about you!! You've gotten those things by doing something illegal!!" Renee cried.
"Believe me; I'm not proud of what I do! It's all came with a price! I have practically sold my soul to obtain everything I own! To be blunt, I am emotionally dead! I don't want my little sister to do the same thing!" Rachel said. Renee knew that Rachel was right. A tear raced down Renee's cheek as she left the barn.
"Don't you think you were a bit harsh?" James asked.
"No. I don't want her to take the same road I've taken." Rachel said.
"Rae, you're the most admirable young woman we know. There is no doubt in my mind that Rene will follow in you're footsteps as far as morals go." Roger said.
"I just don't want her to earn things the way I've earned what I have. I've earned everything I have by running 'shine. That's not something proper for a 16 year old to be doing." Rachel told them.
James and Roger had never seen or heard Rachel raise her voice to Renee. They had never heard the two sisters fight.
