Chapter Two: Discovery

“So what’s this all about??”
“Come and read it and see for yourself…”
(Kaito sat next to Hideki and took the letter; read it and after some minutes of thinking over what it said, he spoke)
“Do you really think it is a clue??”
“Why wouldn’t I??”
“It looks more like a letter-like poem…it was very common between secret lovers on the XIX century…it doesn’t necessarily have to be something meant to give us a clue…”
“I know that! But…the symbolism is quite fitting…”
“How??”
(Hideki stood and turned on his laptop, opened a recently found database in Sendai that apparently had reliable information concerning the folk tales and legends involving shinigami in Japanese culture, scrolled down some pages and started explaining, Kaito standing behind him, watching the screen)
“About the part of the great clock and the last island I think I’ll explain until the end if it’s ok with you??”
“Yeah whatever…”
“As enthusiastic as always…well, do you remember what we know about this guy already??”
“We really don’t know that much but yeah…”
“That’ll do…well, the first part, the person to whom it was written and sent, the expression ’Dr’ shouldn’t really be of any importance but the K should, this guy was last seen living with some…merchant? Am I right?”
“Yeah…”
“Ok, called Sakano Eiji, he was a Japanese wealthy immigrant, next, the elements, the Legend of the Elemental Family says that there were 4 siblings that represented the 4 elements of creation, who were born from Day and Night, father and mother respectively, so, he makes reference here to two important facts of that legend…”
“Which are…?”
“First one: makes reference to the disappearance of the Fire God, known as Akito, and the second one: the reference to the Wind God’s son, a shinigami whose name would be if I’m not mistaken Shirou, and was supposed to be born in a human form, but still with shinigami nature inside the Heike clan, actually most of the legend revolves around the Heike clan, and, though this legend is not popular in Japan anymore, and maybe hasn’t been so during the last 600 or 700 years, so, that’s quite some time before this letter was written, so, whoever wrote this letter must know a lot of Eastern ancient history or actually have been part of it considering the kind of scenario we’re managing…and if the second possibility wasn’t exactly viable, then it should at least have some far, far, real far relative inside it…”
“Interesting up until now…”
“That’s not all of it…”
“Continue then…”
“Ok…this part would be the confirmation of the person to whom it was written being Sakano Eiji…when he speaks of the shadows, and says they’ll be ok without him for a while, he’s speaking of the person to whom he wrote the letter, it was rumoured that, Eiji was part of an organization that had something to do with demons, vampires are said to be the Children of the Darkness, and the name of the organization Eiji was part of was Kage no Ame, ’shadows’ rain’, ah, and the way in which it was signed, merely the initials, they fit with the name we’re looking for: K. M., ’Kidokawa Makoto’, now, saying all this might be going too far, but such a great amount of information in just one document is way too much to be a coincidence…”
(Kaito cut him off)
“Or…way to good to be real…”
“Who would bother?? We’ve kept this investigation as a secret from everyone besides you and me, haven’t we??”
“I know…but still I don’t trust it…I mean, yeah, it’s way too much information in just a single document, and that’s exactly what’s making me so uneasy, why don’t we send the letter to a laboratory and have it dated??”
“We can’t do that, we don’t have the original…but, let me finish!!”
“Ok ok…”
“The last thing to be explained is about the great clock, they were supposed to live in London, so the big clock would be the Big Ben, though I don’t know why is the reference made, maybe because he can’t stay in London any longer, and the last island, this actually is related to the Elemental Family legend too, the legend says that when the Fire God disappeared he was kidnapped by the Chaos God and taken to his castle in the outsides of Kushiro, in the Hokkaido island, so I think that might be the ’last island, all this references may have been made because it’s symbolic writing, it was quite popular at the time, and yes, it was mostly used between forbidden or secret lovers because of being imaginary…”
“And in case the letter fell into the wrong hands, it would be taken as just a mere poem and won’t rise any suspicion…however, if someone cared to look deeper into it…it would be a problem…but…this letter is still not proof enough, we don’t have the document, what are we going to do about it?”
“Alright…I’ll ask my cousin to investigate about the damn letter, I suppose you don’t want to have any strangers in this, do you??”
“Of course not…when will it be ready then??”
“Two or three days…you can take a little time off meanwhile…”
“So then I'll be going to Boston, I'll come back maybe...tomorrow, though, if the data arrives before or if something pops up call me...see ya..."
"Are you leaving already??"
"Of course!! I don't want to waste time!!"
"Ok then...have fun!! Hahahahahaha...."
(Kaito left the building in which they were carrying on the investigation and went to the airport, bought the ticket and left for Boston, he didn't even pack anything because he didn't expect to remain for too much there anyway, meanwhile, Hideki called his cousin on Leipzig...)
"Damn international calls...too many numbers..."
'Hallo?'
"Is Fritz home??"
'Who's calling?'
"His cousin, Hideki..."
'Oh, I'll go for him..."
"Thanks..."
'Hallo?'
"I suppose you haven't forgotten me, have you??"
'Hideki...nope, I haven't...it's been a long time since the last time I heard of you, what's up??'
"Do you remember the investigation I am carrying on along with a friend of mine??"
'Yeah I think I remember...the one to find a shinigami, isn't it?'
"Yeah...did anyone hear you saying it??"
'I'm well aware that it's a secret...so, does this have anything to do with said investigation??'
"Yes...you own a lab isn't it?? The kind of which dating procedures can be made in, don't you, without mentioning research, am I wrong??"
'No, I do have a lab with that kind of facilities...how can I help you then?'
"I found a document...and we have doubts of its age, could you date it for us, please??'
'Sure...is it urgent??'
"Yeah...but that’s not all"
'Ok, what else might be??'
"We don’t actually HAVE the copy, so I’m asking you to find the document, the original one, if you can that is, I’m not forcing you, you know it…"
'Oh my…I understand...that’ll take a bit of time, maybe a week or such…’
“No problem…”
“Ok…then I’ll send you the details in said time, just, send me a copy of the document and that’s all…”
“Ok…well, I’m leaving then…bye Fritz!”
"Bye..."
(Hideki sat heavily on the chair again and thought that maybe he should continue looking for more data bases and clues that could help them get somewhere in case this letter wasn't really any kind of important thing, though he still thought that the symbolism and time were perfectly fitting...but yeah, as Kaito'd said...TOO perfect indeed...)
"Oh well...I won't give this a lot of thought anymore...mmm, maybe I should go somewhere myself...I need some air...but first, I have to send the paper Fritz..."
(He opened his mail and attached the file and then sent it to Fritz, afterwards, he decided he'll go for a walk through Shinjuku, it's kind of dangerous at night, but still he liked it, besides there was an excellent sushi bar he knew of there...)

(A shadow passed by the window in a certain flat, in a certain area of a certain city, the department was quite spacious, the door opened and the inhabitant came in, left the keys on the nearby table, took off his shoes, routine things, but still it was dark, he didn’t bother to turn on the lights, he changed clothes quickly in his bedroom and he stepped out into the darkness of the terrace, and leaned on the hand-rail, it was a tall building, so you could see the urban spot very well, beautiful view indeed, he closed his eyes and smiled)
“Keep on looking…you might actually find me…”

“Damn, it’s beginning to rain…I better get back to the hotel…”
(Kaito ran quickly and took a taxi to his hotel, as soon as he was on his room, he took off all his clothes that were soaked, it hadn’t been a long way to his hotel but it was pouring outside, so he quickly took a hot shower and then put on his pyjamas, he wasn’t even sleepy so he went through the Internet for a while and, ironically, found Hideki on the Messenger
’Hey great detective!’
’Shut up…I thought you wouldn’t be on the ’office’, I actually thought you’d take some time off…’
’Who says I’m not doing it??’
’….it’s you…I’m pretty sure you’re NOT!!’
’C’mon don’t be so damn mean to me…I am home, I’m just in my laptop, that’s all….actually I was checking my mail for the details of the tests that my cousin ran on the letter…’
’….that’s interesting, and??’
’It IS from 1800’s…so; I suppose that your vacations are over…’
’…should’ve seen it coming…oh well, I’ll be back tomorrow at night…’
’Ok, see ya, I’m going to sleep, I suppose we’re starting early the day after tomorrow so I better get some rest before you’re back…’
’Hahahahahhaa…ok, see ya tomorrow then…’
’Bye…’
After that he signed out and ordered some room service…he was watching TV when there was a black out on the hotel, some people actually screamed, but the hotel was pretty silent, or at least the floor he was in was, so he decided to stay on his room, the black out was long, so he fell asleep...near one a.m. the door opened and someone came into Kaito’s room, silently placed something upon the night table and left just as silently as it’d come…the black out lasted all night, but as people went to sleep, they didn’t notice when the lights came back either, early in the morning, Kaito took a shower, dressed up and packed up the little luggage that, after better consideration, told Hideki to send him, when he was about to leave, he noticed a little letter upon his night table, something he didn’t remember it being there last night, so he took it, but didn’t open it and went to the airport to return to Tokyo…)
