Chapter 2
Edward stumbled to the ground as he walked. He caught himself on his hands to keep his face from smacking the concrete. It almost felt like he was going to throw up. It was that girl again. She had to be close. Picking himself back up, Edward tried to focus on her. Instead, he could only feel Jaicyn. Something was wrong, she was too nervous.
He began to run where she was. It didn't take too long. Vampires were one of the fastest things on the planet, but there were some exceptions. Edward came to a stop a few feet from his sister. She was locking arms with a girl in a red cloak. Off to the side he could see Seth and another man in a low crouch. Both of them were lightly growling.
Edward walked forward cautiously, moving behind Jaicyn so he could see the other girls face. "Jaicyn, what are you doing? Let her go." he told her. When Jaicyn didn't move he grabbed her arm and the arm of the other girl. He finally caught a glimpse of her face. A wave crashed over him as he looked over her. It almost made him stumble again. He had seen her many times before.
Randi jerked her arm away from under his touch. There was no way this could be happening. She had to be dreaming. But everything seemed more real and less distant. Her eyes tried to focus on the man in front of her, to shut out everything but his face.
Edward reached out a hand and touched Randi's face but she held up her hand to him instead. The palm of their hands rested on each other. Her hand was so hot against his freezing skin. It felt so wonderful to Edward to feel such warmth again.
Behind then, cat screams filled the silence that had taken over them. Randi and Edward didn't hear them.
"Edward, we have to go, now!" Jaicyn said, tugging on his arm.
"No, not yet." he told her. The screams were getting closer.
Phillip ran up behind Randi and smacked her arm away from Edwards. He wrapped an arm around her chest and waist, pinning her arms to her sides.
"Let me go! Phillip let go of me!" Randi yelled at him, trying to break free of his grip.
"Randi, stop it! We have to go!" he yelled back at her. He could over power her easily enough, but to do that would be admitting to her what he was. And he wasn't going to do that. Not now.
Seth had moved up and was helping Jaicyn pull Edward back. Phillip tightened his grip on Randi and took off running.
"No, wait!" Edward called after them, but it was too late. They were already gone. "Why did you pull me back? That was her!" he shouted and jerked free from Set and Jaicyn.
"Yes, I know it was her! But that man's pard was on their way to defend her. We cannot fight all of them.! Besides, you smelled her, she's human! She can mean nothing to you. Do you understand me?" Jaicyn shouted. Edward moved away from them and began to run. He wanted to find this girl. Randi, that animal had called her. But now was not the time. Jaicyn was right on one thing. They couldn't fight his pard, not and live. At least not yet.
Phillip didn't stop running until he reached Miranda's apartment building. Three other people were standing outside. Randi recognized Daniel among them but not the other two.
Knowing Randi was going to be furious with him, Phillip let her go. Her legs gave out from under her and she fell to the ground. She pushed her hood back from her face and threw up onto the sidewalk. Phillip beant down to help her but she jerked away from her.
"Don't touch me." she said coldly. Her words stung him but he stood back up and left her on the ground.
"What happened?" Daniel asked.
"She met Edward and Jaicyn Matthews." Phillip told them. A guy with purple hair hissed as their names were mentioned.
"You let her get near them? What were you thinking?" Daniel growled.
"Jaicyn ran into us. Literally. It was an accident." On the ground Randi threw up again.
"Why is she throwing up?" a girl with pink hair asked.
"She has a weak stomach when it comes to running with one of us." he paused "And she touched Edwards bare skin." He added quietly.
"Oh, well that's just great, Phillip. Get her inside." the girl said. Daniel reached down and picked her up. He kept her head tilted to the side so she wouldn't choke on her own vomit. Phillip pulled the cloak closed around her. Daniel turned from him and took her inside the building followed by the other three.
Phillip unlocked the door to her apartment and Daniel pushed through the door and took her straight to the bedroom.
"Faye, get the blankets." Daniel instructed the pink haired woman. She didn't hesitate. Faye pulled back the covers and Daniel lay Randi down. Faye covered her back up and added a few more. "Stephan, Phillip, get in the bed." Daniel said. Both of them nodded and climbed into it. Phillip moved behind her and spooned the back of her body. He slid an arm around her and pulled her against his body. Stephan, with the purple hair, pressed his back into the front of her body. They kept her tight against each other so that she take in the heat that her own body was loosing. "What happened when she touched him, Phillip." he asked.
"It was...different. More different than any other time I've seen a vampire touch a human. It was like they knew each other. Neither of them wanted to be separated. They both fought to touch each other again. I do not believe he took control of her or that he was hunting. Jaicyn and Edward didn't try to fight us either."
"Could it be possible that they weren't the bad guys? They don't even drink human blood anymore." Faye interjected. Randi jerked on the bed between the two men.
She'd fallen unconscious shortly after Daniel had laid her on the bed. Her face was dripping with sweat. Her mind was showing her thousands of images. All with Edward and Jaicyn in them. Randi's mind tried shoving the images away but couldn't. They were being burned into her brain and she couldn't free herself from them.
A whimper escaped her lips as Phillip held her from jerking on the bed. Her body wasn't liking it. It wanted to move, to fight back the images soaring across her vision."
"Anyone who would do this isn't a good person. No matter what you think." Daniel snapped at her.
"Actually, leopard girl here is right." A womans voice said. Daniel and Faye both whirled around. Both lowered into a couch and hissed at her. On the bed, Phillip came up to his knees facing the new comer, Stephan rolled over on top of Randi, making sure there was only enough room between them for her to breathe.
"What are you doing here, Savannah?" Daniel asked with a hiss. "You know vampires are not welcomed in this house." Savannah threw her head back and laughed. The movement made her long blond hair fall across her face.
"Oh, Daniel, you do have a way with words. But I am not here for any of you. Except her." She pointed to Randi.
"That's the one person you cannot have." Phillip told her from the bed. Savannah gave an annoyed sigh.
"Don't any of you fur balls get it yet? Not all of us are evil. My family has sworn off human blood. As well as Edward and his sister. I'm not here to eat her. I'm here to take her and prepare her."
"Prepare her for what?" Fayed asked.
"To become the Other Half." she said with a little awe in her voice.
"No. No, you stop this now. She has no idea what that means or what any of you are. She is not going to become a vampires other half." Daniel almost yelled at her.
"Once it has started it cannot be stopped. Only death can put it to an end. She was chosen the day she was born to become the other half. It is her destiny. Not even the vampire had a say. It is just the way that it is." Savannah explained. She took a cautious step into the room. When none of them leaped at her, she moved closer.
"You already know who he is." Savannah said.
"Edward." Phillip said through gritted teeth. "Why him?" Savannah shrugged.
"I do not know. But I do know that she is Edward's other half. And if she does not get to him, she will die." she paused a moment. "Let me take her to him, please, Daniel. One last favor for a lost friend." Savannah said with a small smile. A long time, Savannah had meant something to Daniel. Things had changed since then. Things that neither of them could change. Daniel hated her for it, Savannah knew that, and she hated herself for allowing it to happen. She could see in his eyes that he was remembering. For an instant a flash of regret passed through them and she knew there might be some small chance for a renewal between them. Even if it was only a small amount.
"How long does she have, Savannah?"
"A few days at most. Not much longer after that." Stephan let out a surprised yelp from the bed. Randi had jerked again in her sleep. She used so much force that she threw Stephan off her and into Phillip. Both of them fell of the side of the bed. Randi's body started jerking and twitching rapidly in what seemed like a mild seizure. Daniel and Savannah were suddenly on the bed, holding her arms and legs.
"Let me do it." Savannah said to Daniel. He shook his head sharply.
"No, you can't do it." Randi jerked again, this time coming off the bed.
"Damn it, Daniel. Get your head out of your ass and let me help her. I'm not going to drink her, I don't feed off humans." Daniel just looked at her, not knowing whether to believe her or not.
"Faye, hold her legs for Savannah."
"You can't be serious!" Phillip yelled, finally coming to his feet. "She's a vampire. You can't trust her."
"This one I can. Faye, get her legs." Savannah looked at Daniel a little surprised. He still trust her, after everything, he still did. If there had been more time she would have said something about it.
Leaving Randi's legs for Faye, she moved farther up the bed, getting behind Randi's head. With Daniel's help, she was able to cradle Randi's jerking body against her chest. She gently moved Randi's hair to one side, leaving the other exposed. It had been many years since she had held a human in such a way. It was vaugley intimate. One of the most intimate ways you could hold the vessel carrying your life.
Savannah opened her mouth the smallest of amounts and leaned in towards Randi's neck. She could smell the blood just under the surface. It was intoxicating. She wanted nothing more than to bit down and feed until Randi was completely dry. But she wouldn't, couldn't allow herself to that.
Barring her teeth, Savannah bit down into the pale, cool flesh of Randi's neck. Almost at once Randi's body relaxed in the arms that held her. Blood was dripping down that flesh, filling Savannah's mouth. It took all her strength not to swallow, to let that blood spill out of her mouth and flow down Randi's neck. She clamped her eyes shut. Not drinking was actually causing her pain, but she couldn't let up yet, it wasn't finished. After a few moments, Randi's eyes barely fluttered open. That was enough.
As carefully as she could, Savannah pulled her teeth free of Randi, leaving her mouth open to help her not swallow. The blood poured out of her mouth and onto the bed. She closed her mouth enough to gather the remaining blood and spit it on the floor. She ran her sleeve over her mouth, wiping her lips clean.
When she looked up, all four of them were staring at her. It wasn't every day that they got to witness a vampire not drinking when the opportunity was so profound.
"You really meant it. You don't drink from humans." Stephan said in a whisper.
"No, I don't." She replied, but her eyes were on Daniel. He gave her a faint nod. It was enough for her. They had taken their first step to fixing what went wrong between them.
"Daniel..." Randi whispered.
"I'm right here, Miranda. I'm not going anywhere." he told her, taking her from Savannah and holding her gently. When he looked back, Savannah was gone. None of them had seen her leave. One of the many things a vampire was notorious for. Moving very fast.
"Did someone save me?" Randi asked.
"Yeah. Someone did, kid." he told her, looking where Savannah had been. He was shocked to realized he missed her presence.
