"Where ya headin', Hunny?"

An eighteen wheeler had responded to her message, her thumb in the moist air.

Kate responded, "Anywhere..."

She was tired, she had been walking on the same highway for nine hours. Not a single person had tried to pick her up.

The trucker motioned for her to get in. She threw her back pack in, and followed behind it. It was warm and smelt of cigars and sweat. The man was much older than herself, at least 40. He was balding in all the wrong spots, but she had been with older men before, she could handle it again.

"So, where you from..?" He asked hesitantly.

"Derry, New Hampshire."

Kate didn't want to talk, she wanted to sleep. She wasn't afraid of the man next to her, she was calm. There was no such thing as rape when you would deny no one.

The man, glanced at her as she fell asleep in the passenger seat...

Les woke up before the sun had come up. He could see a hint of it, though, it would be light soon. He didn't have a watch, he assumed it was about six thirty in the morning. He saw now what had awoken him, a few trucks were pulling into the stop.

He sat up and looked around at his surroundings. He noticed that the building he had been in last night was much more crowded now. He wasn't in the mood for that. He continued looking around and noticed the way the back of the building ended and colossal bushes stood. The bushes seemed to provide a hiding spot, from what he could see.

He stood up off the picnic table and looked around.

"Nobody's looking..."

He ran for the back of the building, about twenty feet away. He got onto his knees and climbed under the hanging bush in the front. He made a discovery to his benefit, the bushes were surrounding a little clearing that didn't look as if it had been disturbed for a long time. There was beer bottles strewn about, the color fading away from being here, untouched.

He stood up, he still wouldn't be visible. Perfect. The large leaves on the top would block out the weather for the most part, too.

Les looked down at his feet and noticed something. He bent down and picked up what was a roach from a joint. It was old, but dry.

"Score!" He said, excited.

He threw the bottles outside of his temporary home, and put his bag down in the corner. He could finish sleeping now...

Kate was being shook awake. Sh opened her eyes and saw the man. She had to remember that she had been picked up. She looked around and noticed that they were at a rest stop. It wasn't raining, either.

She looked at the man who had so generously picked her up. She realized that she hadn't spoken to him almost at all before falling asleep in his truck.

She suck out her hand, "I'm Kate."

"Larry! Nice to meet you!" He chuckled at his own sense of humor. Kate always used to think if you had to laugh at your own jokes, you probably weren't funny.

She smile as her stomach grumbled, loudly.

"OH! Thats why I woke ya up! I thought'cha might be hungry." He smiled at her.

"Oh, I'm all set... Thank you though..."

"I insist! C'mon kiddo, I'm payin'!" He was beaming as he stepped out of his truck, and ran around to open the door for her. She was hungry. She had been for days.

They walked together in silence into the rest stop. The was a fast food place here, her stomach growled again at the smell. They ordered, and it being very nice out, they choose a picnic table outside. Kate observed the carvings on the table as she unwrapped her breakfast sandwich.

Larry, looking a little parched in the sun, asked her, "So, what'cha doin running away from home, Kate?"

"I just needed to leave." She left it at that, he was a stranger, as everyone around her was. The details of her life were no ones business unless she felt like telling them.

He pulled a joint from his pocket after practically inhaling his sandwich and hash browns. He puffed on it and handed it to Kate. She took it willingly and smoked it, failing to mention the two of her own she had in her bag.

Thinking to herself, she had decided not to travel any further with the man. He had been kind enough and she didn't want to stay with him any longer. He motioned for her to head towards the truck.

Kate would thank him for picking her up and stay here to wait for another ride...
