chapter three
“One, two, three, four, five,” Alys hung from a low branch and pulled her head up to her knees by her abdominal muscles. Emily watched and counted for her sister. “Ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, Al?”
Alys grabbed the branch to steady her body and looked at her sister. “Yea Em?”
“Why do you have to train every day? I want to go sand running”
“Emily I have to be strong to protect us and Brandon. And if I keep getting stronger I can go faster when we ride.” She smiled at her sister. “I’ll finish up the counting and then we can go sand running. You go get it k?”
Emily ran to the house and Alys continued her workout until Em came back lying on a long board that floated over the sand. Her face had a huge smile. Alys stood on the branch and did a flip off.
“Ready?” Alys walked over and Emily got into a sitting position. Alys stood behind her and kicked a switch and off the two of them went flying over dunes.
Brandon stood at the front door smiling at the two girls laughter. “The two of them love that thing.” He thought of the hours when Alys wasn’t training she was in the crash sight where two satellites crashed into the earth. She spent the time creating the sand runner. It was her pride and joy. She created it at first to make carrying water from the lake to the house easier. Then Emily stole it and rode on it when it was not in use. He remembered how happy Emily’s laughter was and how angry Alys was when she found her sister riding her invention like a toy. He sat back in his chair and looked at the small dot that popped up from the dunes. ‘Alys one day your skills of riding will help you live.’
“WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!” a call of happiness emitted from Alys’ mouth. She always felt so free when she rode. Not even gravity could tell her not you fly. She was alive. Emily giggled happily at her twin’s call. She tilted her head back and smiled at her sister. Alys’ eyes were dead ahead but a smile was forever on her face when she rode.
Alys steered to the satellite crash sight. She stopped onto of a dune when Emily’s eyes widened. She saw it for the first time in 15 years. “Alys? Is that home?” She pointed to the city not 30 miles away.
“Our home is with Brandon. That is no longer our home Em.” Alys turned and went to the pile of metal. She dug threw the parts and Emily kept staring at the small crumbling city.
“Do you think she is still alive?” Emily looked at her sister.
“Who?”
“Mom…” Alys froze. She remembered the day so well. “Al?” should she tell her sister the one thing she kept a secret? She promised herself that she would never let Emily find out that their mother sent them to their death.
“I don’t know Em.”
“Lets go find her then!” Emily smiled at her sister. “Let’s find mom” Alys looked at her sister.
“We can’t. We are not allowed in the city.”
“Why not?”
“We are no longer citizens.” She could not look her sister in the eye.
“You know… You could just tell me the real reason you don’t want go home and find mom.” Alys looked her sister in the eye.
“Let’s get back to Brandon…” She climbed onto the sand runner and waited for Emily to join her. They rode back to the house in silence. As they drew close smoke was billowing up and two men running from the house. “Em, get off now!!” Emily jumped off and Alys kicked the sand runner to go faster. She flew to the house and inside. “BRANDON? BRANDON, ANSWER ME!!!” she looked left and right and over the crackle of the flames she heard coughing. It was Brandon. She rode to him and pulled onto the sand runner and they got out of there, as the house collapsed into it’s self.
