Chapter 3
Flashes flickered across the walls of the crime scene. The local cops were rummaging around the room, dusting for prints, looking for clues, or anything that could lead them to their suspects. Weary detectives leaned against the desk, staring blankly at the spot on the floor where the undercover cop’s body had been found.
“They knew.”
“Hm?” Detective Aspen was brought back to reality by the voice of his female partner, Detective Shaw.
“They knew Mr. Beck had called on us.”
“How could they have known? We let them do the exchange without getting involved.”
“Not because of the exchange. We’ve been tracking them for several months now, they’re professionals. Always done with precision. As soon as one thing is off, one tiny little blip shows up on their radar, they take off. This is the closest we’ve ever gotten to them. So hopefully we can find something in this room that will lead us to them.”
Discouraged by the endless hunt for the ruthless criminals, Detective Aspen sighed, “Not bloody likely. They’re all over the place; you never know which city they’ll end up in next. And if the family decides to obey them, then we won’t even know where they are until after they’re gone!”
“Nobody’s that good all the time. Look we almost got them this time. We need to start thinking smarter than them. There is evidence in this room, it would be impossible for them to not have left anything behind. And now we can even nail them for murder. Put them away for good.” Detective Shaw clenched her fist with that thought and began to step toward the bed. “I want everything in this room that can be bagged brought into the lab. The bedding included,” she said staring into the sheets.
“There’s nothing in the bathroom Detective,” declared the cop that just emerged from said room.
Detective Shaw cocked her head in the direction of the officer conveying the bizarre news. She began walking toward the bathroom when Detective Aspen blurted out what everyone was thinking.
“What?! How can there be nothing in the fucking bathroom? That doesn’t make any sense.”
The officer inspecting the bathroom replied, “Unless they didn’t use the bathroom…”
“The hotel manager said that the guy that checked into this room had been here for two weeks. There’s no fucking way that he didn’t use the bathroom.” Detective Aspen was growing increasingly irritable with the seeming lack of evidence at the crime scene.
Detective Shaw stared blankly into the bathroom when she spoke, “There’s two of them remember. They must have cleaned the place before they took off. Unbelievable.” She threw her arms up over her head, thoughts milling around in her mind. “Do we at least have the video feed of them leaving the building? Maybe then we can get an ID on the second one too.
“Yeah the manager’s getting it for us, everything since they checked in,” said one of the many officers still in the room.
“Good. Let’s pack it up, take what we can, and try to figure something out.” Detective Shaw was clearly exhausting every bit of cop-sense that she had to solve this case. It was time for some rest.
