chapter three: a mute

He had barely left when I heard someone in banging on my door. “Lily! Lily are you okay in there? I just saw Core! What was he doing here? What did he say to you? Did he try anything?” under the bombardment of questions, I picked him up by the waste and threw him over my shoulder, “how did you get out of bed?” Bane twisted around indignantly, “hey! Answer my questions! Put me down! I can walk!” I walked back to his room, “I’m sure you can. But if you ever want to heal, you’ll get some rest instead of walking around in the middle of the night. If you really want to know, he stopped by to tell me that he trusted me to care for you until you healed.” I laid him on the bed, and sat down in a nearby chair. “You’re not going to tell me that you believe him are you? Bane asked quizzically, he tilted his head to the side and squinted his eyes at me. “Let me see your neck.” I let out an exasperated sigh and rolled my eyes, pulling down my collar and leaning close, so he could see my unmarked neck. “See? You’re so possessive. And I don’t even know you.” He craned his neck to get a good look for bite-marks, and quietly replied. “I am not possessive, just…protective. And my fiancé would not approve of this if she were here.” My brain did a little double take. “Fiancé? I didn’t know you were engaged…what will she say when you go home to tell her that you’ve lived with a female healer as you recovered? He looked me straight in the eyes. And replied. “Nothing.” After an awkward silence he explained. “She is a mute,” then what were you doing out here? I held my question, and asked instead, “how did you meet? Is she a dragon?” he looked away from me, so I couldn’t read his expression, “we met briefly, it was…my mother’s decision. She is a normal human, like you. But as I’ve heard, not like you, she is the daughter of a powerful lycanthrope hunter. And has a reputation of hunting with her father for sport.”

He looked back at me, his eyes full of pain, “they hunted out mother’s domain, there were many wolves that had settled and formed a treaty with my father, we…couldn’t help them.” I cast my gaze down. Was this the reason? His friends…the wolves…he must have had to abandon them at his mother’s order.

Technically, she was the queen of the group if his father was the highest class. But still…I could see how that must have been painful. “So, how did you get the arrows in your side? If…you don’t mind telling me.” He nodded, “I'll try to tell you in the morning.”

After I went to bed, I stayed up for a long time, thinking about my own betrothal, how it had been to an idiotic farm boy, more of a marriage of convenience for a well off family than anything else. My parents had little say in the matter, since the particular family controlled the food supply in the little town. But I had protested it so strongly that they allowed me to pack some of my belongings, and run off into the night, so they could say that I had escaped, and not have to worry about the repercussions of denying a rich farm family of a bride. I lay awake for a long time, thinking about my parents, and how this whole mess could turn out. I drifted off to sleep and into my dream.
