Chapter Twenty-Six

Chapter Twenty-Six

Rowan had hoped that she and Garret could have one night out without anything going wrong. She should have known that that wouldn’t be possible. They woke up at twelve and went out to lunch, then a movie. Much to her surprise Garret then drove to a playground. “What are we doing here?” she asked.

“When’s the last time you went to the playground?” he asked with a grin.

“Probably when I was ten.”

“Too long ago,” he hopped out of the car. Her door opened of it’s own accord.

“Show off,” she snorted. He stuck his tongue out at her. “What did you say to me when I did that?”

He laughed giving her a quick once over as he walked over to her. “But I do know how to use it, would you like proof?”

“That’s... okay.”

“Are you sure?” he asked wrapping an arm around her waist.

“Positive.”

“Because, believe me, I don’t mind, in fact I would quite enjoy myself.”

“Jerk.”

“Thanks.” We spent over an hour there, on the swings then playing a game of basketball. He won. This was a side of Garret she had never seen before; he was just happy and playful. Rowan realized as we sat on the swings, as the sky began to grow dark, she was starting to fall in love with him. “What?” he asked when she had grown silent for a few moments.

“Nothing.”

“C’mon, tell me,” he said.

“Really,” she smiled, “it’s nothing.”

“Every time a woman says that she’s lying.”

She laughed. “Moron. Really, there’s nothing wrong, I’m fine. Actually, I’m happy, very happy.” He smiled pulling her swing close enough so he could kiss her cheek.

“That’s good to know. Ready to head back?”

“Yeah.” she stood stretching. They walked back to the car and he opened her door for me. “You know, you don’t have to do that.”

“Hey, as long as I’m around all doors will open.” She rolled her eyes. “Most women like gentlemen.”

“I love how you take care of me,” she admitted. “You always make me feel so safe.”

“But?”

“But I want you to know that I can take care of myself.”

“Baby, remember that you fought me.”

“Yeah?”

“You could stand to learn a little more in hand-to-hand.”

“What?”

“You were good, believe me, but her clan... they’d kill you. You fight honorably, which is great but not very practical.”

“What do you mean?”

“With her training I could have taken you out in twenty seconds.” She looked at him raising an eyebrow. “I’m not bragging, trust me on that. But this has been engrained on me since Liam took me in. When you fight you do whatever it takes to win. You left me with so many openings you were damn lucky I wasn’t out to hurt you.” She was silent for a few moments letting that sink in. “And that is why I’m not letting you get involved in this battle.”

“’Letting me’?” she repeated dully. “You’re not letting me get involved?”

“I could have chosen better wording but I mean it.”

“You are so... full of it, Tarzan. We’re in the twenty-first century, idiot, I’m not going to sit by and… and knit or something while you go off and fight wars. Either we’re partners or this isn’t going to work.”

He sighed. “As usual, you’re right.”

“I know.”

“And modesty is definitely not your strong point.”

“Oh, bite me.”

“Haven’t you learned yet?” he purred pulling her closer and nipping her neck.

“Hey! Paws off, Tarzan.” He laughed letting go. she got into the car and he shut the door before going around to the other side. He drove us back to his dorm. By the time we got to his room Garret was quiet. “What’s wrong?”

“Stay here.”

“Figure the odds, remember what I said less than ten minutes ago. We’re partners.”

“Fine, just stay behind me.” she rolled her eyes but figured that this was at least a compromise. “Rae,” he said once he walked through the door. “Get out of here.” Her eyes snapped to his in annoyance, that’s when she noticed the man.

He was sitting lounging lazily on the chair in the living room. He was dressed incredibly nice, a pair of black fitted slacks and a dark blue button up, long sleeved shirt. The shirt contrasted nicely with his green eyes. He was wearing a smirk on a pair of lips that looked like they had been built for that smirk. “Hi,” he said. He still smiled but Rowan could see worry in his eyes. “Garret, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”

“No way in Hell,” Garret turned back to her. “Baby, get out of here.”

She scowled up at him. “When will you get it through that thick skull of yours? I am not going to leave you!”

“A month ago you would have jumped at the chance.”

“Things change.”

“A girl refusing you,” the man asked interested. “You have to tell me who this is.”

“No.”

“I’m Ayden,” the man said getting to his feet in a slow lazy move. “Garret and I are old friends.”

“And for old times’ sake could you leave and never come back?”

“Mmm... no. And might I say that it’s pretty damn rude for you to even suggest something like that. I’m hurt.”

Garret snorted. “Bull. Now, why are you here?”

“Liam wants to talk to you. You haven’t called him back.” Hurt touched the man’s eyes. “Or me.”

“Really?” Garret asked. “Then why did Micah send hunters after me?”

“Those boys needed to be taken out,” Ayden shrugged. “They were crazy. You must have sensed that.”

Garret gave a stiff nod. “I could smell the blood.”

“What blood?”

Both men ignored her as Garret continued. “So, you’re saying that you sent them to me for an execution.”

“Basically. We knew you’d take care of it somehow. Liam himself trained you, bro, he knew two humans wouldn’t have been able to take you down.”

“So this wasn’t an attempt on my life?”

“If we wanted you dead, Gar, we’d do it ourselves. Liam has too much pride to have someone else do the dirty work, and I have too much respect for you to send someone else, I’d come myself.”

“And I’d kick your ass.”

“So, why’d you leave us?”

Garret sighed. “That girl, the one you guys were going to kill, I knew her.”

“Damn it, Gar, you should have said something!”

“I couldn’t... I know the view you guys have on weakness.”

“Well... yeah, but you’re family.”

“Ayden... things have changed.”

“No. None of that ‘I’m not the man I used to be’ shit. We’re best friends, brothers, if you’re going to walk down the path of righteousness for a girl with great legs and a nice rack-”

“Ayden!” Garret snapped.

Rowan blinked. “Excuse me?”

“I’m going with you,” Ayden finished.
