The Third Wheel
It was late, and Alex had just gotten home and was seated in front of the fireplace, his laptop in front of him. He had found a wealth of information on this girl, she graduated from Oxford last year, and was now assisting with the schooling of disadvantaged juveniles. Tomorrow was the observatory period. He would watch her from a distance, know her lifestyle. What she did in her free time, down to how she liked her coffee. He had a month, so there wasn’t any reason to rush. He could work with ease. Something inside of him however kept pulling at him. This was an assignment like no other, most of his clients were straight-laced businessmen who were faceless to him. This one had a face though, a very smooth, bright…He shook off the sentiment, this was just like any other job. He knew when he entered this business that’s what it took. Just cold, hard reality.
Alex rose early the next day to grab a coffee at the café across the street. At 9:00 he would see Jordan Noble for the first time, entering the Turner Street Academy for Disadvantaged Youth. She would be there for six hours, working with children with autism and various other handicaps. She left for lunch at 3:00, and then returned to consult with the children’s parents. Then she had an appointment with her nail technician followed by a meeting with a friend at the local art exhibition. From there the pair would go and do a little shopping at Downtown Square perhaps and dine at The Don, and afterwards a little nightlife at a club called Carpe p.m. All this Alex knew before he headed out the door.
He flipped the pages of The Morning Star, his eyes quickly scanning the pages as he feigned interest in its contents. He peered over the top of the front page to see Jordan as she approached the large building. She pulled up in a classic red Mini Cooper, and wrapped her long navy peacoat around her to cut off the chill of the morning air. She appeared exactly as he had pictured her, and she was indeed effortlessly beautiful. She entered into the school, and all he had to do was wait.
It didn’t take long. Alex had just reached the Editorial section when recess let out into the courtyard. He watched with what appeared to be casual interest as Jordan engaged in finger painting with a few little girls. She laughed when one of them joked and tried to paint on her arm, it was clear how much she loved her job. One of the girls gave her a picture, and she grinned broadly and gave her a hug. Alex involuntarily smiled, it was an endearing image. And for a moment, just a brief stitch in time, he wanted to leave. Get far away from this girl and her happy life and this job of his that was about to take that all away from her. But that was only a moment.
So far he had managed to avoid looking suspicious. He was observing a bronzed sculpture of a man and his dog when he caught Jordan and her friend out the corner of his eye. He had expected to see a female, but this was a man. A very attractive man, and vaguely familiar. He had short brown hair, a moderate amount of facial hair, and a tanned flawless face that appeared to be as young as hers was. His brown eyes flashed when he saw her, and they exchanged a polite kiss. This was new, apparently Jordan had a lover. They walked through the exhibition arm in arm, they both seemed to have a passion for the arts- and for each other.
Alex had seen enough bronze statues and interpretive paintings. He was relieved when the couple left to go to their next destination, dinner at The Don. The shopping trip was erased from the itinerary, for apparent reasons. He let her out of his sight for an hour while the couple went back to her apartment to change clothes. Alex made sure he caught up with them entering the five-star restaurant later, then decided to lay low for awhile until they left. He did however check up on them from the outside window, and once again Jordan looked so vibrant. In a sleek black dress, she was stunning. She had this effervescent manner that drew people to her, lighting up the room wherever she went. And the man. He couldn't take his eyes off her. When she talked she made vibrant hand gestures, and the man just soaked it all up, his deep brown eyes evaluating every word that came out of her perfectly puckered lips. They were in love, though shy about showing it in the museum they certainly didn’t hide it now. Alex pulled out his Blackberry and made a few notes, the customary procedure for each assignment. These would have to be emailed to Michael after his job was complete for an in-depth evaluation of his work. His work. This girl was about to die, and she had not even the slightest idea. She unknowingly was having a full series of lasts- last steak dinner, maybe even last kiss. He was reading too much into it however, he had to get these ridiculous assumptions out of his head before they caused him to do something foolish- like walk out of this thing for good.
