Part 3

Inside the Haunted

Part 3

---------------------------------

“Gloria!” Bernie and I screamed. We fell to our knees beside her while we heard cries coming from Gus and the others. Gloria remained motionless while a fire raged on the front of the boat.

“Madigan, stay here with Gloria while I go help the others.” Bernie said to me. He got up to go, but I pulled on his arm and stood up slowly.

“No Bernie, let me do it.” I said. Bernie shook his head.

“You’ll get lost. Stay here.” He said.

“Okay, let’s both go.” I said.

“No, we can’t leave Gloria.”

“We can put her on our shoulders.”

“No Madigan, you’re too weak.”

“Bernie, come on! We’re wasting time!” I shouted. I picked up Gloria on one side and draped her arm over my shoulder. Bernie hesitated, and then grabbed the other side.

“Are you okay?” he asked me.

“Yep. Fine. C’mon Bernie.” I said. We began walking, Gloria’s feet trailing behind us, to the opening in the Seahawk. Bernie led the way to the front of the ship and there we saw a huge fire surrounded by oil kegs that were spilled.

“Madigan, don’t argue, but you need to go back. It’s too dangerous here for you and Gloria.” Bernie said to me. I sighed and took Gloria back the way that we had come…except, which way did we come from? I was lost in complete darkness with an unconscious woman on my shoulders on a broken boat. Oh great. Now what was I supposed to do? I heard a footstep behind me…

--------------------------------------

“Who’s there?” I said, whipping around to the noise. No one. I circled around and saw or heard no one again. I stopped and thought. Okay, now how am I going to get out of here…then…what was that?

“There you are. You must leave now. He’s after you.” Emily said behind me. There was a shining glow around her and it comforted me.

“Well, Emily I could if I knew the way out.” I said.

“I’ll help you…OH NO!” Emily gasped again. I looked at her face: there was the blood again.

“RUN MADIGAN!” she screamed.

“How do you know my name?!” I shouted at her.

“FORGET ABOUT THAT! RUN, BEFORE HE CATCHES YOU!” Emily screamed. She pointed down a long corridor before vanished again. I trusted her direction and ran down it. I looked behind me for a second and saw blood appearing on the walls…yikes! I sprinted down the corridor before falling down a deep hole. I felt like time stopped when I was falling. Thanks a lot Emily…OUCH! I fell to the ground with Gloria’s wrist still clutched in my arm. Phew, safe for now I guess.

“KEEP RUNNING! HE’S STILL THERE!” Emily’s voice called out to me from the walls and yet again I saw the blood on the walls behind me, rushing towards me.

“Oh s**t!” I cried. I got up and ran and ran and ran until I came to the opening where the ramp connecting the two boats was. I dropped on to it, completely exhausted.

-------------------------------------

There was a blinding light in the front of my eyelids. I raised my arm slowly to block it and I opened my eyes. It was daylight. I sat up quickly and saw Gloria awakening too. I crawled quickly on my hands and knees to her. She sat up, gasped and clutched her right side near her ribs.

“Gloria! Are you okay?” I asked her weakly. She looked at me blankly.

“Madigan? What are we doing here?” she asked me.

“Don’t you remember? Bernie and I heard this explosion last night so we came outside and we saw you. You whispered Sanchez’ name and then you fainted.” I explained. Gloria’s eyes clouded over. She knew what had happened to Sanchez…

“Gloria, what happened to Sanchez?” I asked forcefully. Gloria held her head in her scraped-up hands.

“Madigan…Sanchez died.” My insides froze. Sanchez…dead?

----------------------------------------

“Bernie, Sanchez, Charlie, Gus and I were on the top deck fixing the bow on the top floor. Bernie was worried about you by yourself, so he said he’d be back and he left to check on you. So after a few minutes, Sanchez said he forgot his flashlight and he asked me to go get it. He was near the oil kegs examining the bow interior; there was a huge hole that went down. So I went to go get it, but when I left, I heard something about someone spilling oil, but I ignored it. I kept going and when I reached the ramp…everything happened so fast. The ship exploded…a fire must have erupted from somewhere, I don’t know where, but it came from the spot that Sanchez was at.”

I was shocked, upset, confused, puzzled, etc. I couldn’t believe what had happened to Sanchez.

“How can you be sure he’s dead?” I asked hopefully. Even Gloria didn’t buy that one.

“He’s dead Madigan.” She said darkly.

“And what about the others? What about Bernie? What happened when we got back here?” I asked her.

“How am I supposed to know? I’ve been knocked out most of the night.” She said.

“Oh yeah. I hope they’re okay.” I said. Just then, I heard a mix of angry and scared voices coming from the opening. Everyone was there, except for of course Sanchez.

“Hey! You’re okay!” Bernie said relieved. I nodded.

“Bernie…Gloria says…says…” I choked on my words. I couldn’t say them. Bernie looked at Gloria.

“Gloria?”

“He’s dead sir. He was in the middle of the explosion.”

-----------------------------------------------

Although I heard the story a zillion times already, I couldn’t help but shed a few tears for Sanchez. He was a nice man, and now, he was gone.

“If you ask me, I think we should leave this boat to rot.” Gus said. We were back in his boat, discussing everything. I was only half listening.

“No. We have to fix it. Imagine what kind of money we could get from it…” Charlie said dreamily. Gus stood up to face him.

“Are you stupid?! We could die here (Sanchez already has), and all you care about is the money?!” Gus shouted. Charlie stood up too, his eyes full of anger.

“Guys guys! Relax! Sit down, both of you.” Bernie said to them. I couldn’t take it anymore. I had to get out of there. I excused myself and walked outside to the ramp. Surprise surprise, there was Emily again, standing in the opening.

“Hello Madigan.” She said carefully.

“Emily, how do you know my name?” I asked her.

“It’s no surprise. They talked about you so much…” she said softly. Who had? Bernie and the others?

“Who has?” I asked her. She looked at me sadly.

“It was a shame that they had to die.” She said. They?…

“Wait a second…Emily! Were my parents on this ship? Did they talk about me? Were they on this ship?” I repeated. She paused, and then nodded slowly.

“He’s changed the name so it appears different to everyone else, but it’s the exact same boat from the wreck of June 14th, 1907.” Emily said.

“Who’s changed the name?” I asked.

“Him. The one who haunts this ship.” She said. My heart froze. A HAUNTED SHIP?!
