A few days later Eshrenn, Enishi and Oreata started to work on the house. By the end of the second week, the cabin seemed almost done. While they where working on the room that was going to be the kitchen, the local guards came by. "Good day sirs." Oreata said.
"Maybe for us but not for you." One of them said.
"Do you have a permit for building that house?" The other asked.
"Yes I do, It's right here."
"You do realize that your building on an area that's haunted, don't you?" The first guard said, looking around dubiously. Eshrenn and Enishi looked at eachother mischievously, and nodded their heads in unison, agreeing on what they were going to do.
"No, I didn't know that. Here's my permit." he said, handimg the permit to the guard.
"Do you see any permit?" he asked his partner as he ripped the permit up.
"No, I didn't see any permit, why-OW!" He yelled looking for the offender that had thrown the rock at him. He looked up at Eshrenn and Enishi, who were still standing there.
"Did you throw that rock at me?"
"How could we? We're standing right here, the rock came from over there." Enishi said pointing towards the woods across the road.
Looking thoughtful Eshrenn said, "Didn't you say that this place was haunted? Maybe it was the ghosts."
"Lets get outta here." The first guard said to his partner.
"Ok, I'm with you, outta here!" The second guard said running off. When the guards where out of sight, Eshrenn and Enishi started laughing.
"What's so funny?" Oreata asked.
"We'll tell you some other time." Eshrenn said calming down. "Let's just get the house done first."
A couple days later as they were putting the finishing touches on the outside of the house, Sakuya decided to pay them a visit with refreshments and all. Chaisa had decided to follow her, carrying more drinks. As they got to the pathway that led up to the house, a horrible scream tore through the air causing everyone to jump. Looking up, the saw a wraith flying towards them very quickly. It reached Sakuya and Chaisa and knocked Chaisa over in it's effort to get to Sakuya. Oreata charged it with his sword drawn, but the wraith just knocked him back with a sweep of it's hand. Eshrenn looked around for his father's sword, which he always carried with him these days, and saw it sitting next to the door. As he grabbed it, his scar exploded in pain. Staggering, he had to use the sword as a type of crutch. As if by some unknown coincidence, the wraith looked right at him, and Eshrenn knew that this wraith was the very same one that had attacked him a year ago, and he had a feeling that the phoenix wasn't going to be there to save him this time.
Mustering up his strength, Eshrenn looked up at the wraith and saw Sakuya struggling in its hand, trying to free herself from it's vicelike grip. suddenly it was like all the pain just dissapeared and there was nothing in the world except for him, Sakuya and the wraith that was trying to kill her. As he drew his father's sword, Eshrenn let out a battle cry and charged the wraith. Again the wraith tried to knock him back with a sweep of it's hand, but Eshrenn had been anticipating this and dived to the side just as the gust went by him. Standing up straight, Eshrenn drew back his sword to stike the wraith's back, but the wraith was one step ahead of him. It had already turned around and drew it's hand back again. As Eshrenn dived again, the wraith anticipated his move and adjusted to hit him in mid roll. As he lay dazed, Eshrenn heard the wraith give a scream of triumph as it raced away. Glancing once more at the retreating figure, Eshrenn saw Sakuya with a look of horror and something that shook him to the core, dissapointment. As he got up again, Eshrenn gathered all of his strength and willed himself to get in front of the wraith.
When he opened his eyes, he saw the wraith racing towards him, suprise etched into it's face. Gathering itself, it raised it's hand, but Eshrenn beat it at it's own game. He raised his own hand, and let his anger flow into his attack. As he brought his hand down, he felt a tingle of power go through his arm as a gust of wind flowed through his hand. The wind hit the wraith and it flew backwards a little, dropping Sakuya. Eshrenn saw the fury in the wraith's red eyes, but when he looked down at Sakuya's limp form, his own anger built up into fury. As the wraith raised it's hand for another attack, Eshrenn dropped both of his hands to his side and let his anger flow through him again. This time when he felt his arms tingle, a burst of heat erupted around his hands. Looking down, he saw that both of his hands were surrounded by flames. As the wraith brought it's hand down, Eshrenn jumped up as hard as he could. The gust of wind missed him, but just when he thought that he should be going back down towards the earth, he found that he was still going up. Willing himself to stop, he realized that he was flying. When the wraith looked up at him, he saw fear etched all over it's face. Smiling at this unexpected turn of events, Eshrenn raised both of his hands over his head and felt the flames combine, and focusd his energy once more, causing the flame to jump in size. With a final scream of defiance, the wraith flew up towards him. Bringing his hands down, Eshrenn pushed the flames away from him towards the wraith. The fireball flew out of his hands with amazing speed, and when it collided with the wraith, there was a huge explosion that rocked Eshrenn to the bones. When the smoke cleared, the wraith was gone, destroyed by the flames.
As he dropped towards the ground, he saw Oreata, Chaisa and Enishi all running towards Sakuya. Landing, he saw her sit up and shake her head, as if trying to get rid of some annoying noise in her head. When she had assured them that she was all right, she looked over at him and mouthed the words 'Thank You', and then Eshrenn fainted.
When he woke up, Eshrenn, looked around his room and saw that the sun was rising and realized that he must have been asleep for the rest of the day. When he went downstairs, he saw everyone sitting in various places around the room looking like they hadn't slept in days. "Good morning." He said, hoping that he sounded cheerful. At the sound of his voice, everyone in the room jumped and the first one up and running towards him was Sakuya, followed closely by his mother. Eshrenn was shocked when Sakuya threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly.
"That's for saving me." She whispered in his ear just before she let go. Then she moved out of the way and Eshrenn's mother jumped him, but she didn't hug him. Instead, she slapped him. "That's for worrying me. The doctor came by, but he didn't know what was wrong with you. We thought that you where going to die." And then she hugged him fiercly. "Don't ever scare me like that again." She sobbed.
'"But mom, I was only out half a day, wasn't I?" He asked as everybody choked.
"No. You were out for three days." Sakuya said. "We thought that you had just exhausted yourself, but the doctor said that wasn't what was happening. He said that something was going on in your body, some kind of change. And the whole time, you where moaning about dragons and phoenixs, like there are more than one phoenix."
"I was?" Eshrenn asked, trying to remember the dreams that he had had. "I can't remember what I was dreaming about." And before anybody could say anything else, the front door burst open and Ja'aku, Chaisa's father burst in, his face red from anger and to much alcohol.
"So." he began." This is how you betray me, eh? By favoring your first born over our child! I was gratious enough to give those bastards of yours a home and the first chance one of them does something funny, you turn your back on me! I won't take it any more!" And as he raised his hand to hit Kyre, Eshrenn had enough.
"You better put your hand down Ja'aku, or I'll make you regret it." Eshrenn said, all the years of torment that him, Enishi and Kyre had suffered coming up at once.
"Taking a stand for yourself now are you boy? Fine, then I'll knock you on your ass so fast, you won't know what hit you!" And letting out a loud yell, Ja'aku brought his hand down to hit Eshrenn instead. Eshrenn grabbed Ja'aku's hand while it was still coming down, and wrenched it behind the man's back, causing the bone to snap. Ja'aku let out a moan of pain that was mixed with surprise. Ja'aku wasn't a small man. He was the town boxing champion for five years in a row and the man that everyone called on when they needed protection, so he was the most surprised when this 19 year old had got him so quickly and so surely, that he hadn't even had time to stop him.
"Do you yeild, Ja'aku?" Eshrenn whispered in his ear.
Ja'aku gulped and then answered, "Yes, I yield." Immidiatly, the pressure on his arm dissapeared and he slowly brought it around to the front. When he had it in front of him, he saw that nothing was broken. Eshrenn had used a mind trick that made him think that his arm was broken. He looked up and saw that everybody had already went outside. Getting up, he let out a yell of rage and raced out to beat his wive's son. When he got outside, he saw that Eshrenn was waiting for him, and he charged. When he was in striking distance, he raised his arm, and felt a sudden blow to his stomach. Looking down, he saw Eshrenn's fist in his stomach, pulling out. When it was all the way out of his stomach, it went straight up and nailed him in the jaw, knocking him out.
"That's what happens when you don't yield." Eshrenn said, looking down at his stepfather. Even Chaisa looked at her father with disgust on her face. "Well, looks like we can't stay here anymore, doesn't it?" Enishi asked, going in the house to get his stuff. Eshrenn soon felt exhaustion take over his body. Looking up, he saw Sakuya standing in front of him with worry in her eyes.
"Are you ok?" She asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He said, swaying a little. "Looks like we're going to be staying at your house for a little bit doesn't it?" He said with a smile.
"Good. Now I can get that secret from you at last." Sakuya said, returning the smile.
"Good luck. I'm as sealed as an air tight box." Eshrenn said.
"Trust me, I'll find your triggers." Sakuya said with a wink.
A few days later when everybody else was asleep, Eshrenn went outside for a little bit of fresh air. When he got outside, he realized that he was shaking. "It would probably help if you put a shirt on." A voice behind him said. Turning around, he saw Sakuya walking towards him with a nightgown on and a shirt in her hands. "Here." She said, throwing the shirt at him.
"What are you doing up?" Eshrenn asked, catching the shirt.
"I saw you come out here so I got up and followed you out here."
"Ah, another attempt to get the secret from me?" He asked, smiling.
"No, I wanted to really thank you for saving me." She said.
"Didn't you already thank me?" Eshrenn asked.
"Not the way that I wanted to." She said. Eshrenn looked at her and saw something in her eyes that he hadn't seen there before, fear.
"I havn't told anybody this, but when you were unconcious, I was scared to death. I know that it sounds crazy, but I didn't want to loose you so soon after finding you." She said, walking over to him.
"What do you mean?" Eshrenn asked, his heart racing from the answer he wanted to hear. The answer never came in words though. Sakuya walked up to him and looked up at him. Looking down at her, Eshrenn realized what she was trying to say. Bending down, he lightly brushed his lips against hers, and then, looking at her to see if that was what she meant, he kissed her. When she finally pulled away, her face was red.
"Did I do something wrong?" Eshrenn asked.
"No, It's just that I've never been kissed before." Sakuya said, turning a little redder.
"Why not?" Eshrenn asked, slipping his arm around her shoulders.
"My brother thinks that we're better than most of the guys that I've tried to go out with. When they would get to the place that we were staying, he'd get out his sword and chase them off."
"Boy that sucks." Eshrenn said. "Will he come after me to?"
"He better not." Sakuya said, wrapping her arm around his waist. "Or he'll have me to deal with." And they continued walking around the village like that, talking and getting to know each other better until almost dawn, when they returned home and after a quick kiss good night, went to their own rooms.
When he was woken up a few hours later by his sister ranting and raving about him staying in bed so late, Eshrenn wondered why he was so tired, but then he remembered the night before and smiled to himself as his sister continued to rave. Finally she asked, "What's with the funny face?"
"What funny face?" He asked.
"The one on your face right now." Then, putting her hands on her hips, Chaisa said seriously, "Your thinking about a girl aren't you?"
"Go away Chaisa. I need to get dressed." Eshrenn said swinging his feet out of his bed.
"Fine, but I'm not done with you yet." Chaisa said walking out of the room. Standing up and streching, Eshrenn realized how close he'd been to being caught and realized that he'd have to be better at hidding what he was thinking than that. When he was dressed, Eshrenn composed his face so that he thought that no one could read it it and went downstairs for breakfast.
As he was going down the stairs, Eshrenn heard humming coming from Sakuya's room and peeked his head in to catch a glimpse of her before eating. She was sitting in front of her mirror, brushing her hair. She didn't see him until he decided to take a chance and softly whistled. She looked up, surprised, but when she saw that it was him, she stuck her tounge out at him and winked. Taking this as his cue to leave, Eshrenn ducked his head out of her room and walked the rest of the way down the stairs to the kitchen where everybody else was eating. After getting himself something to eat, Eshrenn took one of the two empty seats and started eating, leaving one hand by his side. When Sakuya came down the stairs, he gave her a quick wink that she discreatly returned. After getting her own plate of food, she sat next to Eshrenn and let her own hand drop next to her and started eating. While they where eating, Sakuya's hand started searching for his under the table. Before anyone noticed how much that she was focusing to find his hand, Eshrenn clasped hers in his and thats how they finished breakfast, holding hands, but not saying anything that might give away what they were doing.
After Kyre left the table, Enishi asked, "Eshrenn, did you get a present for mom's birthday yet?"
"No, I'm going into the village today to get it, so can you cover for me while I'm gone?" Eshrenn answered.
"Yeah, just don't be to long." Enishi said returning to his food.
"Can I go with you?" Sakuya asked, causing her brother to look up suspiciously and ask "Why?"
"So I can get her something to. I still don't know her that well, but Eshrenn can help me pick something out, right Eshrenn?" Sakuya asked innocently.
"I guess I can help you out if you need it." Eshrenn said just as innocently.
"Well I suppose you can go then." Oreata said, still supicious.
"Thanks Oreata." She said standing up and giving her brother a quick kiss on the cheek. Enishi choked on his food when he saw Sakuya and Eshrenn holding hands before they let go. Just before he said something, Eshrenn gave him a look that said 'If you say anything to anyone, your going to regret it.' And he wisely kept his mouth shut.
As they were walking towards the village, Eshrenn said, "Good cover up for a reason to come into town with me."
"It was the truth, I do want to get something for your mom for her birthday." She said, wrapping her arm around his waist.
"That's good, because I think that she's expecting something from you." Eshrenn said, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. And while they walked like that, they didn't see the creature take wing from a tree behind them, a wicked, knowing gleam in its eyes. Nor did they see Oreata watch them, seething with anger that dispersed when he saw the creature take off.
When they returned to the house that night, Oreata quickly seperated Sakuya from Eshrenn and locked her in her room, not telling her why. As he got ready for bed that night, Eshrenn wondered where she went after they got home when someone quietly knocked one his door. At first he almost missed it, but when they knocked again, he answered the door, only to find Sakuya standing there. "Can I come in?" She asked.
"Sure." Eshrenn said standing to the side. She walked in and Eshrenn asked, "Whats up?"
"I'm leaving tonight. I wasn't supposed to tell you, but I can't leave you without telling you where we're going."
"Why are you leaving?" Eshrenn asked.
"That wraith you killed was looking for me and my brother. We're actually fugitives running from the forces of the Sorceress. We've been running for as long as I can remember. When you killed the wraith, she felt its death and sent someone to investigate. When they saw me, they went straight to her."
"Wait a minute, you saw it?" Eshrenn asked.
"Ah, no. My brother did. He followed us into the village. When I got home, man did I get an earfull."
"I'm sorry." Eshrenn said. "So you were going to tell me where your going?"
"The royal palace. If they come looking for you, flee to there. I'll take care of my brother when you get there." Then she reached up and kissed him. "Take care of yourself, and if you start feeling like somethings wrong, run." And with that, she was gone. Walking back to his bed, Eshrenn thought about what she had said. He finally fell asleep with the sound of the phoenix song going through his mind.
