'This is thinking'
"This is speaking"
Where we left off...
It was only from afar that I could watch my sisters. I have never seen them since that rainy day. It was the day I left everything behind. It was the day that I could never forget.
Sighing, I took in the fresh salty air as the sun began to peek from the other side of the Aretha Mountains. It must have been about ten in the morning. I stretched and then lowered my gaze to the valley below me. While looking over the vast plains, I noticed that the scenery was indeed beautiful. It was filled with colors I had not even taken the time to notice before. The very sunrise was what made it so breathtaking. The warm sun touched the leaves of the tree so gently and caressed the fresh grass that lay over the hillsides. Cotton-like clouds covered the warmth that was once present, and let a chill creep by with the small wind. The smell of pine was the only scent in the wind, for it overpowered even the flowers. This moment was the first truly pure moment I had had since I left. I closed my eyes, taking in the warmth, the smell, and the beauty. I wanted this moment to last, but I knew it wouldn’t. As if on cue I noticed the gathering of townspeople that I lived high above. My father was the elder of the town until he passed away, but I was soon watched over by the new elder, Lord Makoto. His wife and daughter were wonderful people and they did so much for me. My only wish was to pay them back.
Below me I could make out Lord Makoto in the center of the bustle of people. He was speaking to them about the Fusion Gods coming through our town. I knew this only because he always tells me what’s happening so I can give advice. That is, only when I decide it’s the right time to speak.
My curiosity got the better of me when I noticed three men standing in the crowd. They were men that I had never seen before. I stood straight up on my balcony and shielded my eyes from the sun so as to see them better. The men were indeed strangers. They had on robes that suggested they were from somewhere high ranking, like My Lord’s castle. I looked down at my apparel and tried to see if it was fitting for me to go out in.
I fell asleep early last night after my training so I was wearing black slacks that ended at my knees and a white button up shirt that was loose on me. The top two buttons were undone, but it didn’t look too revealing. I quickly pulled back my hair and held it up with two black chopsticks that were sitting on my bedside table. I grabbed my staff from the corner of the room which was wrapped in a black cloth. My boots were slipped on soon after and I made my way out of my room. I then entered the living area and left it just as quickly. From my position in the living room the front door, and my black robe, were in view seeing as how they were right next to each other. When I made it to the door I quickly grabbed my robe and threw it over myself, covering me from head to toe. In fact, the robe even ventured a little bit too much onto the floor. I fastened my robe around my neck and then exited the door to my home, closing it tightly behind me. Much to my surprise there was what seemed like a commotion in the town square still.
I walked down the hill to the settlement hurriedly and arrived on time for the speech Lord Makoto was about to present.
In the small town of the Aretha Mountains the large disturbance was very unbecoming. This town was usually a quiet and simple place. The people all knew each other, the children all played together in the town square every night before bedtime, and no other towns ever come to the Aretha Mountains for any harmful reason. This was a very peaceful place, and it was safe. So why was there restlessness in the air?
The peace and fairness of the town was upheld by the elder. He had been ruler of this town for only twenty years, and ever since his younger years, has protected his people by keeping a fair and just law system. The event that was about to be announced would cause quite a disturbance to Lord Makoto, and his family.
The rambling crowd was soon hushed as their ruler stood before them, along with his wife. Lord Makoto was fifty six years of age and withering quickly. Sometimes I even wondered how long it would be until his passing. The old wise man’s kind grey eyes looked over his loyal subjects. When it was completely silent his emaciated body shifted, and his smooth voice was heard loud and clear to all. “I have received an important message that I believe the whole town should be aware of.” He began slowly. He ran an old hand through his balding grey hair, and then continued. “Word has been received from our neighboring towns that an unknown army of demons are…” Lord Makoto paused for a moment to cough while leaving the townspeople on the edge of their nerve. “The Fusion Gods have been sighted on the southern border and are moving north to the castle of Lord Yukio…We are in the direct path and they will have no mercy for us.” Lord Makoto finished.
A buzz was heard throughout the mass of townspeople. Quickly, the entirety of the city became quiet as Lord Makoto raised his hands for the attention of the people. “I have arranged for our protection. You all have nothing to fear. Please, I beg you all not to fret over this small mishap. Everything is under my control…” With this being said, a sigh of relief was felt from the once tense people before him. Lord Makoto turned to his wife. She looked questionably at him, but said nothing.
Usually the women of this town look young, but Lord Makoto’s wife didn’t. Kura was forty two and she acquired aging marks throughout her younger years quicker than most. What really gave away her age though was her hair. She had beautiful raven black hair with wisps of silver strands decorating the curly locks. She frowned, creating many more wrinkles on her skin. Still, she did look like the days of her youth did her justice.
Slowly the town gathered elsewhere and the normal order of things was returned. It was when Lord Makoto and Kura turned to walk up the hill to their home that they noticed me standing in an area, vacant of people. I stood with my staff held in the ground firmly and my head was held high as I looked around. My eyes finally landed on Lord Makoto and Lady Kura again and they began to approach me.
“Amaya, I’m glad to see that you made it to my speech.” He said happily. I smiled and nodded. He knew very well that he was welcome. “You must have noted the men that are here.” He said as he noticed my expression change into a more concerned one. I nodded again.
“Yes,” I stated bluntly. He looked at Lady Kura with an uncomfortable face. I noticed this and then closed the gap between us as I helped Lady Kura walk her husband home. I didn’t feel like having the uneasy feeling resting over us, so I decided to not let them say another word about it.
Slowly we made our way to the house. It was a long walk uphill, I demanded before that Lord Makoto move into another home, but he refused. He decided to move into the home with me, he was afraid that he was going to be a burden to me. He’s a stubborn old man, just as my father was. No matter how hard you fought with him, he would never give in.
I sighed heavily when they walked into the house as Lady Kura ushered him to slow down and take it easy. I turned back to the town, looking out into the distance. The three men stood there, staring back at me with shielded eyes. I gripped the door tighter and then entered my home, my eyes still fixed on them.
