The Cynical

“Aw, Uncle, I don’t want to hear it.” I pouted at him, hoping he wouldn’t tell me the story. Before my slave came into my life, I hated fairy tales with a passion. The ones they wrote in books ended in happiness. Why should they be happy when I wasn’t? Why was my own story filled with grief? Why did my parents have to die when I was so small? I could vaguely remember them, but it wasn’t my fault. Who could I blame? Nobody, really, but I hated when things were so happy. That’s probably why most of the maids, the guards, and everyone kept their face from showing any emotion. They knew.

He looked at me for a moment before nodding. “It doesn’t end happy.”

I sighed. Didn’t matter right at that moment anyway if it was a fairy tale or not. I just wanted to leave the castle so I could be on my own and rest. After 3 hours of studying and learning etiquette, I was downright tired. After my free time was over, I had another 3 hours, but that was for fighting. Couldn’t have the future king be weak and all.

Whining just didn’t cut it with my uncle. I was happy for that even though it didn’t go my way. Everyone did what I said except for my uncle. No one ever told me “no” and sometimes that irritated me.

“Sit,” he ordered, those black eyes of his daring me to say no. Wisely, I sat. “This is more or less a fairy tale, and it is also more or less real.”

When I snorted, he simply hit my on the back of my head. Only he could do and be free of consequences.

“Listen, Yurius.”

“Yes, sir.” I felt like grinning, but didn’t, schooling my face to boredom.

“Once long ago, there were two kingdoms. The north kingdom from here was once called the Moon Kingdom. No one is sure why, but they say that the royal family had hair as pure as silver. Their castle was marbled in white, and at night, the moon often shone over it, brightening the very sky from the reflection it cast not just from the castle but the vast lakes, rivers, and ponds that graced their land.

“Our kingdom is the south kingdom, once called the Kingdom of Gaea. Our castle was like it is now, made of black and violets crystal with diamonds embedded into its making, but then, when the Moon Kingdom shone brightly at night, the diamonds in the crystal would glitter like stars from the light of the moon.

“The two kingdoms lived in peace for many years for both these kingdoms thrived from the delectable elements that came from the deep earth and underwater. They traded within each other, a citizen from Gaea able to drink safely within a tavern in the the Moon Kingdom and vice versa.”

Uncle stopped talking for a bit, his dark eyes staring off passed me that I wondered if someone was behind me. I looked back, but surely enough, no one was there. Unconsciously, he brushed his fingers through the ebony hair that was tied back in a thong, falling just as it touched to his shoulder blades. He turned away from me, his leaning form walking to the only window in the room, the back of his violet clothes to me.

He continued again. “The peace was not to last. The people could get along with one another, but they could not stand the thought of their royalty to become one with the other. Deep in their hearts, the people of each kingdom had a sense of pride to their royalty.

“There was a prince of the Moon Kingdom, who was in love with our princess, and she was in love with him. Their love was forbidden. Quickly, the princess was given an arranged marriage, and was threatened with an assassination plot against the prince if she did not go through with it. For the love of the life of her prince, she married.

“The prince, sorrowful of her marriage, ran away and disappeared. As the last prince, the royal line was severed in the Moon Kingdom, and that kingdom fell into chaos once the king and queen both died. The people wanted redemption and forgiveness for the turmoil they brought on themselves when they forbid their prince to love his princess. They prayed for the return of their prince. Alas, slowly, the land dried up, the happiness fell into depression, and many became refugees to live in the south kingdom.

“Even when the princess’ line continued, many people began seeing the changes that happened to the Kingdom of Gaea as well. Not quite as fast as that of its rival kingdom, but slowly, even now.”

“Do you know where he went, Uncle?” I asked, intrigued by the story.

My Uncle smiled, but shook his head, and he left me alone.

I fell in love with that story, even though I didn’t believe it could be real. Not real, that is, until I laid my eyes upon him, the only one whose body, heart, and soul I wanted very much to own.
