Chapter Seven
“Rowan,” Cat said grabbing her friend’s arm and dragging her backstage. “What took you so long?”
Rowan grabbed her guitar and followed the others on stage. “It’s a really long story. I don’t want to talk about it.”
“That’s cool,” Cat shrugged.
“Everyone ready here?” Mr. Conner asked.
“Yeah,” Cat called.
He stepped up to the microphone. “Ladies and gentleman. Please welcome, Nyx!”
“Hello,” Cat said stepping up to microphone. “I’m Cat, on guitar we have Rowan, on bass guitar Maya, on back up guitar we have Polaris, on drums is Cherish, and on keyboard is Lupe.” They then launched into “Welcome to My World,” which was the first song the group had written.
“Have you ever woken up at night
And stared at the ceiling?
Waiting but never knowing
What you’re waiting for
Welcome to my world
Have you ever winced
At the sunlight?
Finding yourself wishing
For the moon’s glow
Welcome to my world
Oh it’s cold
It’s lonely
And you’ll never know
If you’ll live or die
Welcome to my world
Have nights come too slow
And days come too quick?
Have you ever wished
For death?
Welcome to my world
Do you ever need
To feel the moon upon your face?
To see the moon’s blood
Drenched upon the land?
Welcome to my world
Oh it’s cold
And it’s lonely
And you’ll never know
If you’ll live or die
Welcome to my world
Yes…
Welcome to my world...”
The applause was thunderous. Cat grinned and stepped over towards Rowan. She quietly told her which song to sing. Rowan had written it for Jesse before she had turned him. It was called “Death is the Only Thing that Separates Us.” It was a soft ballad.
“You are beside me
Closer than anyone
And yet so far away
I can’t keep away from you
I try to
But your light draws me in
And death is the only thing that separates us
I can’t stay away
I care too much
We’re in danger
Our love puts us there
And death is the only thing that separates us
You believe that love conquers all
That if we love
We’ll never truly be apart
I’d like to believe that
But it’s too hard to be optimistic
After I’ve seen so much
Known so much
The only thing I know now is that
Death is the only thing that separates us”
Their next song was unexpected. Lupe started to play a song that they had never even practiced before. Cherish quickly picked up the beat and Rowan tentatively strummed her guitar. Lupe sang, which was unusual for her since she was always kind of shy.
“We’re too different
You tell me
It’s like the night and day
If you’ll come close you’ll only hurt me
But I know different
You hide
Back among the shadows
So I can’t see you
Can’t see how much this hurts you
Like it hurts me
You claim
Our love is forbidden
That they won’t let us be together
But we can
Just try to believe
Love can win, we’re never alone
As long as we have our love
I know it’s hard to believe
But we can make it
Our love will see us through
I know I’m not brave
I know I’m not smart
But together we can make it
Together we can fly
Soar above everyone
We can be free
Be together
Finally…
Completely…
We can leave
If they’d only let us go
But they won’t let us escape
So take my hand
Let’s make a run for it
We can make it
Baby we can make it
…Just believe…”
Rowan was slightly confused by the time that the song was done; there was something there. They played two sets before Cat said, “For our last song we’re going to play a song that I’m sure all of you know.” We then sang Concrete Blonde’s song “Bloodletting (the Vampire Song.)
“There’s a crack in the mirror and a bloodstain on the bed
There’s a crack in the mirror and a bloodstain on the bed
O you were a vampire and baby I am walking dead
O you were a vampire and baby I am walking dead
I’ve got the ways and means to New Orleans
I’m goin’ down by the river where it’s warm and green
Gonna have a drink, walk around
I’ve got a lot to think about oh yeah
There’s a rocking chair by the window down the hall
I hear something screaming in the shadow down the hall
O you were a vampire and I am nothing at all
O you were a vampire and I am nothing at all
I’ve got the ways and means to New Orleans
I’m goin’ down by the river where it’s warm and green
Gonna have a drink, walk around
I’ve got a lot to think about oh yeah
They used to dance in the garden in the middle of the night
They used to dance in the garden in the middle of the night
O you were a vampire and I may never see the light
O you were a vampire and I may never see the light again
I’ve got the ways and means to New Orleans
I’m goin’ down by the river where it’s warm and green
Gonna have a drink, walk around
I’ve got a lot to think about oh yeah”
The vampire crowd went wild. “Actually,” Nick said stepping onto the stage and up to the microphone. “Our vampire friends are wrong. This is our last song.” With that the ‘shifters launched into “Werewolves of London.”
“I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mien
Ah-oooh - Werewolves of London - ah-oooh (Repeat)
If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Ah-oooh - Werewolves of London - ah-oooh (Repeat)
He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Ah-oooh - Werewolves of London - ah-oooh (Repeat)
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Ah-oooh - Werewolves of London - ah-oooh
Draw blood
Ah-oooh - Werewolves of London - ah-oooh”
Cat smiled rolling her eyes. “If we had the time I’d respond to that,” Cat announced. “Goodnight everyone.” They bowed to almost deafening applause and then stepped off of the stage. Brayden, Tristan, and Mr. Conner walked over to greet them.
“That was great,” Mr. Conner said. “I’d like you guys to start after break, playing Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.”
“That’s fine,” Cat announced. After a few moments most of the group left to go hunt. They invited Rowan to come along but hanging out with a bunch of couples wasn’t her idea of a good time.
“Rowan,” Cat said grabbing her friend’s arm and dragging her backstage. “What took you so long?”
