Chapter 2 – Interest
All that I could think of was his hand on mine, and where that blush came from. Until now, I never gave it a second thought concerning my sexuality, I was absolutely confident I was straight, but I guess I was wrong. It was only now when we walked into the room just in the nick of time, that I actually noticed what Nick looked like.
He wasn’t hard on the eyes, with a warm, genuine smile that fit perfectly with his brilliant blue eyes. He had short, blonde hair that comes over the front of his head a few inches. He was of average height, around 6 feet, and his build suggested that he played some kind of brutal sport, probably football.
I made sure not to meet his eyes, as he sat down behind his friends from the hallway, motioning for me to sit in the chair beside him. I complied, though I was still deep in thought, and still more than a little bit flustered.

Man, I’m excited! I actually met someone who I could relate to in this damned school, another “Shadow.” But I guess I’m luckier than most of us. I found out about my powers a few days after the accident, so my parents got the orders to move earlier than most.
I took a lot of measures to fit in, like joining the football team in the time I had during the summer. That’s where I met Zach and Jeff. I’m not saying I’m the smartest kid out there, but they're in the running for the stupidest. But they’re loyal, and fun to be around, even if they can be asses.
But Kevin, he changes things. After he ran into me, it finally clicked. There must be a lot of us here at this school, but I don’t know why whoever sent us here wanted us all in one place. I was practically jumping with anticipation, I couldn’t wait to get to know him better, maybe I could learn a little bit more about why we could do what we could do.
Zach and Jeff were talking about the first game of the season this Friday, so I took the opportunity to meet the man who bowled me over just earlier today.
I turn around to talk, but he’s just rocking back and forth, chewing nervously on his nails, obviously in a different world. It’s only when I wave my hand in front of his face that he wakes up and glances at me, dazed.
“Hey, Kevin, you awake there?”
“Huh? Oh, ya, just thinking out things, it’s a lot to take in.”
“Um, let’s keep it quiet here, no one knows about me right now, and I’d like to keep it that way.”
“Ya, well thanks to an asshole named Steve, I don’t have the pleasure of keeping my own secret.”
“I’m sorry about that, but we should still probably talk where no one can hear us or anything.”
“How about one of our houses? Mine’s free all the time.”
~ Kevin ~
As soon as I said those words, I knew that I couldn’t take them back. I had to put my head down to hide the blush that returned to my face. I lifted my head just enough to see his response, and he looked at me with a laugh, and nodded. For some reason I felt better, and with that I lifted my head, okay for now.
Laughing outwardly at myself for how awkward that looked, I said, “Cool, I can tell that we’re going to have a lot to talk about. By the way, what other classes do you have?”
Glad to have something to distract from my actions, I glanced over our schedules.
“We have one other class together, 8th period um… I’m not sure what this class is, its just a bunch of numbers and letters, but they’re the same as the ones on yours.”
He took his sheet back, and looked at it himself.
“Well, there’s a room number, but there isn’t a teacher name. I guess we can fill in the blanks at the end of the day.” Glancing at his watch, he whispered in my ear, “Oh, well, it was nice to meet you Kevin. Next time though, try to contain yourself whenever you see me. If you keep tackling me down, people might start talking.”
With that, the bell rang and he left with a mocking wink, Zach and Jeff following closely behind. I think I burnt out my hormones for the period, so I just laughed off his comment and we went our separate ways for now.

~ Nick ~
I spent a good part of the next few periods zoned out. I vaguely wondered how many of us there were exactly, and of all the places to be sent, why here? Classes went by so damn slow, but it wasn’t long before 6th period, the class before lunch, came around.
As if math couldn’t get any worse, it turned out that the asshole that Kevin was talking about was in it. I didn’t give him any reason to think that I was a Shadow, so I could sit back and see for myself how bad he was.
I leaned it, mocking interest, and he wasn’t kidding. The amount of shit that left that kid’s mouth made me want to knock him out on the spot.
“Hey, my dad got promoted after they discovered those freaks. He got put in charge of them. If you ask me, they should all be killed on the spot. Locking them up won’t do any good, they could just go right through the walls, like the mutants they are.”
One of his satellites piped up in a worshipping tone, “Wow, so you mean the rumors about those people are true? I thought some people were just reading too many comic books.”
High and mighty on his soapbox, he said, “Oh, they’re true, and they need to be stopped before they get out of hand. Who knows what else they can do?”
I was really pissed by now; it was all I could do just to reply in a low growl, “How would you know anyway? Just because your dad’s new job got you money, you think you’re so good? It’s not like the Shadows had a choice to be the way they are!”
“Hmm… why do you care, are you one of them too?”
“Oh… no, I just don’t think it’s fair that you judge them before you really get to know any of them, that’s all.”
“As a matter of fact, I have met one of them; he’s a weird kid if you ask me. He didn’t even need to be a Shadow for him to be weird, you can just tell.”
I was angry, I don’t know why, but I couldn’t stand him making fun of Kevin for no reason at all, and he already put him through hell this morning. Before I could say anything about it, the teacher got fed up with us talking, and proceeded to throw an eraser at Steve to get our attention. He didn’t look any happy about it either. I think I’m going to like math this year.

~ Kevin ~
Lunch, finally! I wouldn’t admit to myself that it wasn’t because I was hungry, but I still ran for the cafeteria anyway. Nick was in line when I got there, and I cut up behind him.
“Hey Nick, how’re your other classes so far?”
“Eh, pretty boring, but math was interesting at least. Steve’s in that class and he’s worse than what you said. The teacher got pissed and threw an eraser at him though. So, how about you?”
I was thinking that I missed his company, but I quelled those thoughts. “I’m fine, but none of my other classes are really any special. I’m just glad that the day’s almost over.”
“Tell me about it. At least I don’t have any homework. I thought about it some, how ‘bout we hit the town after school, see what this city has to offer?”
“Sounds good, my parents won’t have a problem with it, and I didn’t get any homework either.”
We paid and looked for a table to sit. After looking for a bit, Nick found Zach and Jeff and they led us to an empty table. To our grief, the table was right next to the one where Steve was sitting.
Before we even had the opportunity to sit down, he spotted us, and with his friends behind him, he sauntered menacingly towards us.
“If it isn’t the Shadow, and his caretaker.”
All I wanted was to get out of there, I didn’t want a conflict to start, and I looked pleadingly at Nick to let it go.
Nick looked pretty torn between beating the living shit out of this guy, or just walking away. He came up close to Steve and whispered in his ear, “You leave us, especially him, alone, or I won’t just leave next time.”
“Ha, what are you going to do if I don’t, freak boy?”
He was already walking back towards me, but before I could do anything to stop him from doing something stupid, he swung around, and nailed Steve in the nose, causing it to bleed.
“Freaking shit, you bastard, you broke my nose.” Blood was freely flowing from his nostrils as he looked at us, bewildered. “Go to hell freak, and take your Shadows with you!”
He rushed towards the nurse’s room, his satellites orbiting around him with fake concern.
“Nick, you retard, why did you go and do something like that?”
He casually wiped his hand off on his black shirt. “I didn’t like him making fun of me, and I really didn’t like him making fun of you. Besides, he’s not going to tell anyone, it would hurt his pride.”
“That’s fine, but I really don’t need you to protect me like that, I can handle myself just fine.”
“Hmm… I’ll keep that in mind, but let’s go. I think we made a scene.”
I looked around, and he was right. I didn’t even wait for him; I bolted out of there, and trusted that he would follow me.

That took a little bit longer than I planned, but until summer, I won’t be able to write/update regularly. As always, reviews are greatly appreciated, but it doesn’t matter. I’ll continue this story to the end, regardless of the amount of reviews.
