Out of the Dust
Chapter three.
Crawling across the rocks he could now see the tips of the buildings in the distance. Not much further and he would be there. The journey had taken a lot out of him though. Maybe a short rest wouldn’t be too bad. He needed to be at his best to get there in time. He had to make it. He just had to
Lacey took her friend arm and helped her out of the chair. She hated seeing Sandy like this, she was so down. In the beginning she had been happy fun and easy then her pregnancy had started to take it out of her. She could now hardly move she was complaining of back pains and joint aches. It wasn’t surprising having to sleep on the cold hard floor in her condition. There were beds upstairs she was sure of it but being above ground meant it was easier to be found and that just couldn’t happen. Lacey would let the minds of these children be corrupted the way the others had. She was going to hopefully give them the best life possible.
Sandy rubbed the aching spot in her back it had gradually got worse in the past hour it was sitting on that chair so long she should have moved but she didn’t have the energy. The kids were now happily munching away at their sweets. That should keep them quite for at least twenty minutes. Sandy had wanted to ask Lacey when they were going to be moving upstairs but by the way Lacey had returned so flustered it was obvious it was still too unstable yet. What she wouldn’t give for a comfy bed and a hot bath. Lacey came to her side and steered her into a secluded corner where the children wouldn’t over hear them.
‘It’s getting really ruff out there I was nearly run down by the Helics , Azreal has them wound up over something it’s probably the usual fighting over an area of the city with the Argons. It’s so stupid why do they think in this situation that its easier to fight then to just live I peace and share the things we have.’
‘I don’t know you would have to ask them that!’
‘I’m going to have to go out again for food I didn’t get enough. The hill groups are moving further and further away from the city edges they are scare that they will b the next targets. It’s going to get very hard very quickly. I don’t know what to do for the best!’
‘You do the best you can and we could ask anymore from you. You are like a mother to those kids but they wouldn’t want you to get yourself killed for them.’
‘Thanks but I know that soon we are going to have to find alternative food sources. But for now I have a few things in mind for us.’
He reached the city limits. The smell of smoke was so strong he had encountered it a half mile away but here it was enough to make his eyes water. How could this be? This was suppose to be a safe place. They had said they would be safe here.
