Chapter Three: Saturday Morning

"Hello," Vashon mumbled when he answered the phone. By this time he was already in a drunken stupor. "Umm, hi," said the voice on the other end. Stumbling to sit up Vashon sort of yelled, "You call me and bring me out of my drunkenness and all you can say is 'umm hi'?"

Scott on the other end was having trouble understanding him. "Vashon? You OK? This is Scott."

"Scott?" Vashon shouted in surprise. Suddenly he felt pretty sober. "What's up?" Vashon sat in his easy chair listening intently to Scott's story. Vashon could tell he was upset due to the cracking of Scott's voice. It sounded as if he was trying not to cry. Trying to be a tuff guy. Vashon said his 'uh huhs' and 'yeahs' when appropriate so that Scott would know that he was listening. Although at the same time he was attempting to hide the eagerness in his voice. 'Finally, that boy will be mine!' Vashon kept thinking to himself.

"So, what do you think I should do? Win her back or what?" Scott asked Vashon. Vashon took a long pause, making it seem that he was actually listening to Scott's story and thinking of a solution. After a while he replied, "Well, I feel your pain man. Believe me I do. But honestly I believe that, considering she has already moved on before considering your feelings, that you should do the same. I know it's going to be hard but trust me this has to be done. Or you'll always live with this and trust me you don't want that." Scott answered with a 'yeah ok'. Sounding very disappointed.

"Tell you what, since I'm such a good friend why don't you come over and hang tomorrow? I just got a new bike that I've been itching to drive; maybe I'll give ya a ride. Sound like a plan?"

"Actually, yes it does. Thanks Vashon. I'll take you up on that offer. Getting out of this gloomy apartment would do me good." Scott got directions to Vashon’s place and told him he'd be there around 10 in the morning. Scott hung up the phone and felt slightly better. "At least tomorrow will be better. Or so I hope."

Vashon was lifting his coffee cup to his lips when the doorbell rang. His excitement taking over he gulped down what was left and got up from the kitchen table. Leaving his cup behind he answered the front door and Scott was standing there. "Hey man," Vashon said cool like, the excitement bubbling inside.

Scott waved and mustered a quiet "Hello". Vashon crossed his arms across his chest and gave Scott a disappointed look. "Now, today is supposed to be a good day so get that gloomy look off your face. And it looks like you didn't get a wink last night. Come in and I'll make you a cup of coffee." Vashon stepped aside and raised his hand as an offer for Scott to come in.

Scott followed Vashon inside and into the kitchen. He sat down at the table as Vashon reached into the cabinet and grabbed another cup. Then placing that in front of Scott he turned around and grabbed the coffee pot, pouring the first cup for Scott then refilling his.

Scott mustered a 'thank you' as he took a sip. Then looking back to Vashon he said, "This is quite a place you got here. How long you've been here?" Vashon smiled and answered, "Since I was born. My rents left it for me when they moved out of state. That was shortly after I graduated from high school. Nice way to start out as a bachelor huh?"

Scott chuckled and nodded his head. In silence they both finished their coffee. Vashon stretched in his chair and sighed loudly. "Well now, let me give you the grand tour!" Scott smiled and said 'sure' and they both got up from the kitchen table.

"Obviously, this is the kitchen, and the room to the left of the door is the living room. Bathroom is down the hall under the stairs." Vashon said this as they walked into the living room and he pointed down the hall. "Up the stairs are the guest bedrooms and the master bedroom. Off the master bedroom is the master bath and you can see that later. As for now what would you like to do?"

Scott stood there at the bottom of the stairs and thought. The only thing that popped into his mind was Cynthia, and the last thing she said to him. Tears began to form in his eyes once more and Scott closed them tightly. ‘No, I will not cry.’ he thought. After a few minutes he opened his eyes and Vashon looked at him curiously. “Sorry, the only thing that comes to mind is… uh… well…” Scott’s voice trailed off.

Looking at Scott just loose himself in the middle of his sentence, Vashon knew instantly why. “It’s ok, for now let’s just sit in the kitchen, and drink some coffee. I’ll make us something to eat. I’m sure you’re hungry. Even if not you’ve got to eat.” Vashon then turned and headed to his left back to the kitchen. Hearing Scott’s footsteps behind made him smile. ‘Good, got his attention back.’

Once in the kitchen Vashon refilled their cups with coffee and found his cast iron skillet. Going to the fridge he grabbed some eggs and bacon. Turning back to the stove he turned it on and laid the bacon on the skillet. “So, how you like your eggs?” Vashon asked Scott.

Scott sat there looking at Vashon at the stove. “Runny, sunny-side up I think is what that’s called.” Scott answered. While Vashon cooked their breakfast Scott couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off of him. The way his shirt stuck to his back sent chills down his spine. Scott kept looking as he tried to imagine what his back looked like without his shirt on. Or even his chest. He seemed to work out, so he might have some toned muscles.

Scott smiled as the thought crossed his mind then quickly shook his head. ‘Why am I thinking about Vashon in this way? Am I just looking for a way to cope?’

“Breakfast is served,” Vashon snapped Scott back when he placed the plate in front of him. “So you’re very quiet this morning. What you thinking about?”

Scott blushed violently when the thoughts popped back into his mind. “Oh! Well, umm… nothing… really!” Scott flustered.

Vashon laughed as his face turned beat red. ‘I wonder?’ “Alright, alright. Calm down. Just eat up. I made your eggs they way you like. I think I know what we’re going to do today but it’s going to be a surprise.” Vashon said with a big smile on his face.

“I’m not going to like this am I?” Scott asked with a slight wine in his voice. The only reply he got from Vashon was a sly grin. “Today’s going to be interesting.”
