The Sewer

The Sewer…

When Casey came to, she was in a dark room. There were broken water pipes, and it smelled like a sewer. She head kept beat with the water dripping off of the pipes. There were old greenish, yellow algae on the ground; the rocks around her were wet and slippery. They were covered in thick, chunks of green slime. And Casey could hear the distinct sound of rats in the far distance. The walls were old looking and cracked. There was mud and garbage shoved in the open gaps between the walls. She opened her eyes more, trying to remember what had happened to her. She drew a blank. She sat up, too quickly, “Ouch! What the--” she felt her head and looked at her hand; blood, thick red blood was clearly visible. Sure enough, she had been hit hard; whatever happened to her it wasn’t pretty…she knew she had better get going, before whatever hit her comes back. “I’m going to have a concussion for sure,” she said to herself. She looked at her stomach making sure that her baby was all right she didn’t need another miscarriage.

Even though the baby wasn’t Kyle’s. “Oh Kyle! He must be a worried sick.” She looked around again, “where am I??” she didn’t recognize this place at all. “This must be one of those under sewers,” she thought to herself. She looked at her engagement ring and smiled upon it. All Casey had with her was a backpack, which had: a notebook (for her poems), a picture of Kyle and the ultrasound picture, her wallet (that is if whoever did this to her didn’t steal it) which had about three hundred dollars in it, a bad of chips, and her cell phone. “Oh! My cell phone, which will come in handy.” She opened her bad and reached for her phone. She turned it on, and it said “no service.” “Shit! Damn sewers are blocking the transmission…I wonder if I still have my wallet” she sat down and opened the pouch that her wallet was always place. It was still there. “Good. Now at least when I get out of here I can call Kyle and tell him what happened, or what I can remember, and then call for a cab.” She felt her head again, this time more blood. She decided to rip off part of her shirt and rap it around her head to stop the bleeding somewhat…

She looked on the ground to find a safe place to step. She was laying on a big rock, which was surrounded by a stream of water filled with human wastes. “Yuck! This is the grossest thing I have ever smelled.” The hair had a sour, sticky, damp scent, mixed with the smell of old rotting feces and human urine. If she were to step in the wrong place, she would slip and fall in this water, and be covered in human waste!

She looked around carefully. She chose her steps very carefully. Then all of a sudden she heard a beeping, coming from her bag. She opened it up and it was her cell phone. She looked on the screen; “low batt power turned off…” she just stared at her only hope for communication fade away as it died…

“Well this is just great! Now I am stuck in a place I don’t even know, for a reason I don’t even know, and now I have no way of contacting Kyle or my parents unless I can find a pay phone! When is luck going to go my wa--” she fell to the ground holding her stomach, a sharp pain struck her like lightning. She had the wind knocked out of her, when she finally found the strength to stand up she looked at her pants and there was blood all around her genital area and all around the inside of her thighs…

“oh my sweet Jesus in heaven…it happened again.” Casey was in shock and denial. Her and Kyle planned so hard to keep this baby, “why does this keep happening!!?” she collapsed to the ground and curled up into a little ball, and cried until her ribs ached. She cried until she didn’t have any more tears to shed. “I HATE YOU WORLD! I HATE YOU AND WHAT YOU KEEP PUTTING ME THROUGH!!!” she screamed furiously. And she started to cry again, she was about to scream more words of wrath until she heard that laugh…she took a deep breath and held it in, not making a sound. “You’re going to die Casey…” she sat up quickly and attentively. It was the same voice she had heard on the phone…

It was all starting to come back to her now. She was in the park waiting for Kyle. She had received a note earlier that day to meet him there at midnight. Casey thought nothing of it, since he was always doing romantic stuff like that. Then she remembered she heard a small child crying in the woods, or what sounded like a small child. She went to see what it was and if it needed help. Then when she found nothing, she turned around and a tall man, about 6’0, wore a black ski toque, and a black jump suit. He just smiled disturbingly, that’s all she could see, which was provided by the moonlight. He grabbed a club and knocked her out cold. “And this is where she woke up…” she whispered making sure not to make a sound above a whisper. She quietly stood up, holding her aching stomach…and started to tip toe forward. “If you think you can get away from me Casey Lee Gamble you have another thing coming…I have monitors all over this place, and when I see you are getting to close to the exits, which by the way I have blocked off. But should you find a way past the blockade I will come and get you Casey, I will come and get you then kill you.” The voice said maliciously. “Where are you!?” she asked inoffensively. Again the same evil, malevolent, nasty laugh, “now you didn’t think I was going to tell you did ya?” the voice said frankly. And then continued to laugh. “It’s not funny! You think this is funny messing with peoples lives!??” Casey asked in vehemence. No reply. She continued to walk down the narrow passage, in this revolting sewer.

“HAHAHAHAHA! You’ll never find a way out Casey…” the voice said finally. Casey was very frightened. She didn’t know what to do, or where to go. Then she remembered something; she has an expansion pack thingy for her cell phone. All she has to do is plug one end into her Discman and the other into the cell phone and the cell will use her Discmans power. It wouldn’t last very long of course but long enough for her to reach the outside world and get some help…she crouched down making sure to cover up what she was doing. Even if this man did have monitors everywhere around her, the position she was in he would never be able to see what she was doing. She plugged the first end into her Discman and the other into her cell. The screen lit up and made a small muffled beeping sound and on the screen read, “powered and ready.” She almost did a cartwheel but she vetoed herself from doing so. She managed to get her phone to work, and got through to Kyle, “Sweetheart! Where are you? Everyone is worried si--”

“I don’t have time to explain, and I am sorry to cut you off. That guy that phoned me the other day? The one I told ya about? Well he hit me over the head with something and I am now in some underground sewer…he said he has all the exits blockaded. And I am basically trapped…and, and…I lost the baby” Casey broke out in tears; she knew she only had about a minute left on the phone. “Honey, its ok. What sewer? Try to describe to me what it looks like and everything around you in as much detail as possible, and I will go to the nearest sanitation engineer and find out what sewer best matches the description.” Casey gave the best description she could conger up. He wrote everything down. He phone started to beep. “What’s that?” he asked. “It’s my phone, its giving its warning beeps before it disconnects us, we have about 20sec.” He sighed hopelessly, “don’t worry baby, we will find ya, try to stall…I love you will all my heart and soul.” He said in an affectionate voice. “I love you to Kyle with all my heart and sou--” just then her phone died. She began to cry; all she wanted to do is cry in Kyle’s arms all night long. She missed him so much. But at least he was safe, she thought. Now she thought of how she could stall this insane kidnapper. “What are you doing down there girl!” the voice bellowed interrupting her train of thought. She had to think fast…

“So what are your plans?” she asked naively. “Like who are you and what do you want from me?” She asked. The voice spoke up loudly, “You never answered my question…what were you doing,” he asked inquisitively. “Umm…just keeping warm, it’s really cold down here!” she replied. Quick thinking, she thought to herself.

She had managed to pussy foot around conversations for about three hours now. But his response time was increasing. It seemed like hours before he finally replied. And they were just short answers. She became very bored very fast. But finally the voice spoke up rather irritably, “How the hell did they find this place!?” Casey smiled. Kyle had come through for her. Now if she could only get her cell to work for 10 more seconds. She was sure that would be enough, at least she could tell him that it was the right sewer. She flipped her batteries around in her Discman, sometimes that works she thought. And thankfully, luck was on her side. It turned on. She went to her phone book on her cell, and pressed the coded number for Kyle’s cell. “Hello? Casey?” he asked apprehensively. Casey laughed, “I got to make this quick my phone is definitely going to die…are you at a sewer?” she asked. “Yes, I am, is it the right one?” just before she could respond her phone died again. “Shit, fuck, shit!!!” she cussed. She again flipped her batteries over. Now all she needed to do is say one word, just one, “yes.” It turned on again but the battery icon was flashing. She knew that if she could even get it to dial a number all she would be able to get through is a yes…so she dialled his number, and before he could use up her words she answered him, “Yes!” she shouted. “o--” her phone died. But this time she didn’t care because she would soon be in his arms sitting in front of a warm fire, drinking hot coca. “YOU HAVE A CELL PHONE!! NOW YOU’RE REALLY GOING TO DIE Casey! FORTUNATELY FOR ME I AM NOT FAR FROM YOU, AND YOU WILL BE DEAD BEFORE YOUR BELOVED RESCUES YOU!!!” he screamed, and then started to cackle. “Oh my goodness! Kyle please hurry”, she said quietly to herself. Then she closed her eyes and prayed to god that she would get out of here alive…

She wasn’t sure which way to walk…if she walked backwards she could be leading herself directly to this man. Or if she walked forward she could be leading herself away from him and closer to Kyle. But she didn’t even know where Kyle was. Then she heard the splish-splash of footsteps walking promptly through the sewer waters. She started to panic, the sound of the footsteps bounced off the walls around her so she still couldn’t tell which direction to run. And by the time she knew it would be too late, and she didn’t even know if this man had a weapon or not…

Just then she turned around, and he was lurking in the shadows of the sewer. Casey opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out. This was it; she was now face to face with the enemy. There was now no one around to save her; she looked more closely at the man. She recognized him. “Its, it’s you!!” she screamed.

Just then he raised his arm and started to strangle her. She managed to get him away and took deep overpowering breaths.

“Casey, I told you. I’m going to kill you…” the man said callously.

“ NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!” she screamed just before she was hit…

This story is a different format. It isn't as neatly presented as many of my other stories, but I think that's what makes the "Boyfriend Dearest" series so addicting. I hope all of you are enjoying reading this series so far and as always I want lots and lots of comments. I think every writer can use some constructive critisism or just plain out compliments... I would love more of the compliments, haha.
