night owl
New chapter!!! three in one night...
Marcus winced as Aurora screamed for the fifth time that night.
“It was just an owl, Sweetheart, nothing to get shook up about,” he said calmly. They were in the last stretch of forest before they would reach the outer edges of Ethlith, a small fishing village.
What was important about Ethlith was that it was the very first town travelers came across when passing into the Empire from the north mountain range. Marcus would be so much happier when they reached an inn and he didn’t have to hear one of the twins scream every time something moved in the forest. Adrian looked spooked and huddled a blanket with his sister. Aurora was crying again, he whole body shaking with her sobs.
Marcus sighed. They had to sell well. He’d kill himself if he didn’t make a fine profit off of babysitting these two.
“Where are we going?” Adrian asked. “When are we going to be there? What’s it like there? Are there other children? Where’s mama? Is she going to be there? Is it anything like home? Mama says there’s a war. Are we going to see soldiers? Are we going to see daddy? He’s a soldier. Is he fighting in a big battle? Are we going to be safe? What about…”
Marcus groaned. Every night, the same thing: Adrian would start down a line of questioning and wouldn’t stop for hours. He spoke clearly and loudly, demanding information. When Aurora spoke, she was quiet, barely whispering her words.
He mused over the differences in the twins. They had been on the road for a little over three months, and Marcus had watched them carefully. Adrian always took the lead; he spoke for his sister and always protected her.
Aurora was a weepy child; she would cry at the drop of a hat. She wouldn’t look Marcus in the eye when he spoke to her, but would push Adrian in front of her and made him answer. They were both blond haired with big blue eyes and pale skin. Both were beautiful to look at, and both promised to be beautiful when they grew up.
Marcus laid down on the grassy patch they had settle in and pulled his blanket up around him. he waited until the twins did the same before closing he eyes and falling asleep.
He wasn’t worried that they would run, fear at least would keep them from wandering or trying to run. He hadn’t mentioned that they were now technically his property, to be sold to someone as soon as they reached more civilized country. For now he was just Uncle Marcus.
Ethlith was fifty-two miles from the temple of Arisis, which in turn was roughly eighty miles from Norune. Lord Antoni lived in Norune, and with luck Marcus would be free of the twins within the month.
