Random Walk

Chapter II

“So, “ Alex looked at him, “can you give me a tour?”

“A tour?”

“Yeah, you work here right?”

Luca found that it was difficult for him to say no especially because Alex was looking at him with a pair of wide, hopeful eyes. He sighed. “Fine.”

“Yes!”

Alex was so enthusiastic during the tour. The boy really knew a lot about Italian’s history. Alex’s knowledge about Renaissance era probably could match his.

“How far have you got with the sightseeing?” he asked.

“Actually, I’m just about to start,” Alex replied. “I stay at the hotel near here so I came to visit this palazzo first. This palazzo is really amazing.”

“You think so?”

“Yeah,” the boy replied eagerly. “This place makes my mouth water it’s so full of history and beauty. You could sum up the history of Florence in this house. Even now, the head of Martelli family still live in here. Who knew if I could meet with the Duke of Florence?”

Luca almost choked. The duke of Florence. It was true, his ancestor, Francesco Martelli married with Vittoria de Medici so with the extinction of the Medici family the title to Florence passed to Martelli family. He wondered what Alex would do if the boy found out who he really was.

“You don’t look like a history maniac,” he commented.

Alex had to laugh. The boy had a delightful laugh, full of sun, lusty with life. “No, I believe I don’t look like a seventy year old man with thick glasses and white long beard,” Alex said jokingly.

They laughed together and then continued to explore the palazzo. It’s already dark when they finished the tour.

“You’re a very good guide but I think you already knew it,” Alex said. “Thanks a lot for accompanying me.”

“How long you will stay here?” he asked.

“For the next three months.”

“That’s enough time for sightseeing. So, what’re you going to do tomorrow?”

“Well, I have a plan to visit Palazzo Pitti. I want to see its Boboli gardens.”

“I can take you there.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

He didn’t know why he offered himself to take Alex sightseeing around Florence. The words just jumped out from his mouth and from Alex’s reaction, he couldn’t take his offer back. But that was okay; he liked having Alex as his company. It’s probably weird, considering they two had just known each other for a day but he could talk with Alex easily, the meeting of true mind, he supposed.

It never happened when he spent his time with a woman. Those women knew about the latest gossips, Valentino’s fashion show in Milan, new cosmetics and stuff but they knew nothing about economy, politics, and arts. Oh, he often met with an intellectual woman too but they were too occupied with another thing let alone to talk properly. That was his fault actually. He wanted to have a fun and in order to do that it was not possible for him to engage with a kind hearted woman. A lady deserved a better man and beside that they also wanted commitment. Meanwhile all he ever wanted was a few good times together. Nothing more. Nothing less. Not to mention the fact that he already had a fiancée. He quickly pushed the thought away. The last thing he wanted to think now was Donatella Rinnuci, his fiancé.

Alex was practically like a kid in a candy shop. He beamed at everything he saw in Palazzo Pitti. They spent all day in the museum. It seemed that they were privileged visitor and indeed, he had contacted a few people so they could get into the museum easily.

As they were leaving Palazzo Pitti at length, Alex asked. “How about a dinner?”

He agreed and they went to Piazza della Repubblica to have a dinner. The piazza was bordered by cafes, and one side was arcaded, giving shelter to booksellers, newspaper dealers, expensive shops, a cinema and the central post office. They chose to eat in one of the café. . Alex insisted that he would pay the food because Luca was so kind to accompany him around, neglecting his job. If only Alex knew.

“It’s really delicious!” Alex exclaimed after the boy swallowed one spoon of spaghetti. “It’s really different with spaghetti that I usually eat.”

Of course it was different. Those American cooked spaghetti differently, just like pizza. Italian pizza and pizza hut was totally two different thing.

“Hey Luca, is it okay with you accompany me around? I mean is how about your job?”

He thought fast. “It’s okay. Actually I work as finance manager at the museum. And, it ‘s very pleasant to show one’s hometown to someone who is really interested in it.”

Alex nodded. “Figures out,” the boy said. “You look nothing like a tour guide.”

“Really?”

“Yeah! You look different. The atmosphere around you, somehow it’s different with any other people.”

He quickly changed the topic. “Where’re you going to tomorrow?”

Alex thought for a while. “Galleria degli Uffizi.”

He leaned back in his chair and looked at Alex thoughtfully. “If you like history that much, why do you teach math? You should be a history teacher,” he commented dryly.

“I don’t have a time for that,” Alex replied. “Math is really useful but history...” the boy trailed off awkwardly. “That’s my favorite, that’s all.”

The next day he went to pick Alex up. When he came Alex hadn’t had his breakfast yet so they went to cafe together.

“Prego, signore?”

“Una spremuta d’arancia e torta di ciocalata, per favore.”

“Subito, signore.”

After the waiter left, he turned to Alex. “You didn’t say that you can speak Italian.”

Shrugging, Alex said. “You never asked.”

After breakfast, they went to Uffizi. Uffizi was art museum in Florence that had the world’s finest collection of Italian Renaissance paintings. And now they were standing in front of ‘the Birth of Venus,’ the most famous of Boticelli’s paintings.

“This must be the standard of beauty in Renaissance era,” Alex commented dryly. “Not my taste, though. Man nowadays likes ultra slim woman,” Alex said, adding, by the way of explanation. ”You know, like those supermodel, Naomi Campbell or Kate Moss but,” the boy paused, “you’re Italian so I suppose you like curvy females, with hour glass figures. Just like Monica Belluci perhaps?”

Luca tried to hide his smile. “Most people’s ideas about Italians come straight out of cliché.”

Alex stared and then laughed. “Yeah, you’re right.”

Their visit to Uffizi was fun. Luca really like to have Alex as his companion. Now they were walking across the street, towards the parking lot, not hurrying their steps.

“I love being here in Florence,” Alex stated suddenly.

He stopped to look at Alex, smiling faintly. “And why is that?” He prompted.

Two lazy hazel eyes twinkled at him. “I’m free. I feel like I can do anything I want without someone telling me that I have obligations to do.” Alex paused and added seriously. “Isn’t it funny the way we’re talking, just as though we’ve known each other for years and years.”

He replied easily. “Well, I’m a great believer in instant friendship.” Actually he wasn’t. But with Alex it was different. He decided it was because he hadn’t met anyone with whom he had felt so relaxed before.

Alex snickered. “I never thought I would hear that from someone like you. I hope we will soon be old friends. I have the strangest feeling that I’ve known you for a very long time.”

He was about to reply but his words died as he found that Alex had leaned closer. The boy was as tall as him so now they were face to face.

“Thank you for the tour,” the boy breathed out and leaned to kiss him. It was just a little peck on the lips. Luca froze on his spot. Had the boy really kissed him? He should feel disgusted by it; after all he was a normal man. He didn’t swing that way. But strangely, the kiss itself felt good.
