Confessions
Arsenia sat on the deck of her two story home, staring into the night sky, thinking about the previous day. All she could remember about attacking the girl was pinning her on the wall and telling her to leave her and her friends alone. From what she hears, she hospitalized the girl and Lisa and Travis got her out of the school fast enough to avoid school security.
‘What’s going on?’ She thought to herself. The last time she had a lapse of memory was when she was eleven years old, shortly after the death of her natural mother; she was told she had attacked her shrink, but she couldn’t remember a bit of it.
She closed her eyes and thought back to that house and the woods she could remember hiding in. she suddenly saw a flash of her natural father’s sneering face and then the vision of her mother’s body, lifeless on the kitchen floor.
The wind stirred the leaves of the trees above her and Arsenia distinctly heard a harsh whisper from behind her, ‘This isn’t happening.’
Arsenia’s eyes shot open as she reared to face the sliding glass door behind her. No on was there and the wind kept blowing steadily through the trees. ‘Arsenia…’ the whisper came from the trees this time and once again Arsenia reared to search for the source of the voice. ‘It’s not your fault, your old enough, Arsenia, pay him back.’
Arsenia heard the sliding glass door slam open behind her. She sat bolt upright in her chair, shaking. “It was only a dream…” she whispered to herself as she turned to see who the visitor was.
“Hey Arsenia, why didn’t you come to school today?” Travis asked as he took a seat in one of the other lawn chairs.
“You know the answer to that, Travis. I would have been arrested or something.” Arsenia rolled her eyes and relaxed back into her chair.
“You wouldn’t have been arrested, Arsenia… but they do have you on the list of suspended students. According to the list you have another 3 weeks.”
Arsenia gave a stunned look to Travis, “But that’s enough time to fail me for this grading period! I’ll never pass any of my classes!”
“Yeah, I know… maybe you should call the dean and convince her to at least let you get all the work from your teachers.”
“Yeah, maybe I should.” Arsenia looked towards the trees again. “Do you remember what those people said about me?”
“You mean the bitch you mauled? Yeah, something about your dad murdering your mom, but I know that’s a load. Your mom is still alive, you live with her for Christ’s sake.” Travis looked at Arsenia as she blankly stared into the trees “They’re just a bunch of fucking assholes trying to spread rumors.”
“No, you’re wrong. I never told you but I’m adopted.”
“Are you serious?” Travis said shocked, “Wait, do you mean those assholes were telling the truth? Was your mom murdered?”
“Yeah,” Arsenia said and faced Travis “My real dad murdered her. He used to beat both of us. I saw her body ripped apart and mutilated across the kitchen floor. I was only eleven…”
Travis sat speechless as Arsenia told the story she hadn’t told for years. “I’m sorry, it it’s worth anything; I would have never guessed…”
“No, it’s Ok.” Arsenia said and stared into Travis’ eyes, “The funny thing is I cant remember attacking that girl and I’ve done something like that before and I cant remember that either. I have this weird feeling that it has something to do with my asshole of a father.”
Travis looked at Arsenia for a short while, staring at her eyes. “I never noticed how blue your eyes were.” He said at last.
Arsenia was started at the comment. “My eyes aren’t blue, they’re grey.” She said slowly.
“Well they are blue now. Wait, you know I didn’t believe her until now, but Lisa’s all freaked out; she said something about your eyes… she said they were a bright orange when you were attacking that girl, then when you calmed down before passing out they faded to yellow and then back to grey.”
Arsenia stood up at this. She had been told the same thing twice before. Once from the detective that worked on her mother’s murder case, and once from the shrink that she attacked. “That decides it then; I have to go visit my father.”
