Chapter 3
Sam unlocked the door, it had been a long night and Annabelle was still staying at his flat, the grief had taken over, she slept mostly, when she was awake, she’d rock back and forth clinging onto her legs, and muttering, she hadn’t eaten anything for three days. She’d been there for four nights now, he wanted to cheer her up, and so on the way home had nipped into tesco’s and bought her favorite…Phish Food Ice-cream.
“Anna?” he called softly, there was no answer, just like the last three nights he came home from work. He’d be home every day for the next week, he’d taken the time off to stay look after Anna, she shouldn’t be alone at a time like this he thought. He hung up his coat, and noticed the sitting room door ajar and the light on, he saw a shadow cross the door way, and smiled to himself. She’s up. Good. He crept to the door way and watched her as she lay the table, Candles? She was setting the table wonderfully, He stepped over the threshold.
“Hey, why the candles?” He asked softly.
“You really are male,” Anna replied kindly “Don’t you recognize a candlelit dinner when you see one?” She smiled sweetly.
“Yes I do!?” He said indignantly. “But why?” Annabelle walked over to Sam and took the bag from his hand, and disappeared into the kitchen. When she returned Sam was still lent against the door frame, she had removed the dressing gown, if he had not been lent against the door frame he was sure he’d have fallen over, she looked stunning, involuntarily his jaw dropped. She was wearing a black translucent vest top and a flowing black skirt.
“What?” Annabelle smiled wickedly. “Oi you… stop looking like a goldfish, and sit down. Like steak?” She gently pushed his jaw up, then took his hand and led him to the table. He sat down stunned, she was amazing. Only four days after her parents death she was looking fine bar the cut on her arm. Just the one, she had said as if it was ok.
When the steak was before him and she had sat down, he finally decided to speak.
“Anna, you didn’t have to do this.”
“I wanted to. Try the food.” She spoke softly, her voice caressing him, his heart began to race and the sound of her voice soothed his mind, after the busy and stressful day he’d had.
He couldn’t help but watch her as he ate the meat and veg on his plate.
“Sam?” She asked looking him in the eye, not like the other day, he couldn’t work out this look.
“Yeah?”
“Who killed my parents?” She spoke very matter-of-factly.
“Well, I shouldn’t be telling you this yet, because we’re really not certain…”
“Sam, tell me. They were the last of my family.”
“I know. Anna, it appears that there were two killers, from your mothers post mortem, it appears that her wounds were afflicted by an animal…”
“What animal could do that? A lion perhaps?”
“I’m afraid that seems unlikely the claw fragment found doesn’t match with any animal species humans have cataloged. It’s a mystery. Your father was wounded with blades, you wouldn’t have seen but there was a six and a half inch blade imbedded in his back it’s a miracle he lasted till you arrived especially considering they also took his eyes. Other than that I can’t tell you anything more, because we don’t know.” He paused and looked at the sturdiness of her shoulders, she wasn’t shaking anymore. “I’m sorry. Anna I really am.”
“Don’t be. It wasn’t your fault any of my family died; I was different from them, wasn’t I? Have been really, the black hair, always being strong, I could pick my Dad up when I was six, they couldn’t. There’s something different about me compared to everyone.”
Sam was confused he didn’t know what she was talking about, yes she was a little different, but that had always made her more attractive to him, she was beautiful.
“I think I love you.” He whispered un-intentionally, he thought he’d only said in his mind.
“Pardon?” Anna looked at him, slightly bewildered. “Sam, did you just say what I think you said?”
“Err…shit, did I say that out loud?”
“Yes you did…” Sam looked at the young woman in front of him, stunned. Shit, I can’t believe I said it.
“ I think I love you Anna” She smiled as he spoke,. Suddenly, she stood up and pulled Sam to his feet, pushed him against the wall and kissed him. His heart skipped a beat as their lips met. His pulse raced, and thoughts swam through his mind but he heard none of them. After what felt like a lifetime, Anna slowly pulled out of the kiss and looked him in the eye, a glint in her own eyes.
“I’ll clear that up when you’re at work tomorrow.”
“I’ve got the next week off. Thought you’d need the company.” Anna smiled.
