Waking Up
Nersa collapsed onto the floor next to his cot. He was exhausted from all of the excitement the stranger had caused, but his bed was taken up by a stranger. The young man had stumbled in noisily and attempted to throw himself into the fire. Regardless of his apparent weakness, the newcomer had put up quite a fight. Had it not been for Jilen administering the sedative, Nersa was sure that the attractive man sleeping in his bed that moment would have been burned alive. Jilen finished checking the intruder\'s vital signs before sitting down next to his leader.
\"He\'s ill, but I think he\'ll live.\" Jilen stated calmly. Nersa nodded in acknowledgement. The two watched the shadows cast by the campfire while Jilen silently wondered if he should mention the bruises that he had found on the sickly man\'s arms and chest..
\"How do you know so much about medicine?\" He querried suddenly, catching Jilen off guard. The redhead laughed at his own reaction before answering.
\"I don\'t know much, actually. I use to work for Nune,\" Jilen explained. Nersa did a double take and started paying more attention.
\"You worked for Dr. Nune?\" He asked curiously. A sheepish grin grew on Jilen\'s face, and he coughed uneasily.
\"I wasn\'t very good. He dismissed after a year.\" Jilen concluded, \"I was too slow of a learner.\"
Nersa yawned and looked again at the stranger. \"You know, he\'s kind of small. He might make a good thief when he recovers.\"
\"Is that why you\'re letting him stay with us?\" Jilen inquired.
\"I suppose, yes.\" Nersa shrugged, pulling the ribbon out of his hair and putting in his bag. He stood up and yawned, then offered a hand to help Jilen up. \"We\'d best get some sleep.\"

Nersa woke up on the hard stone floor, and was momentarily confused as to why he was not in his cot. Sitting up, he noticed the young stranger in his bed stirring slightly. He had been sleeping for the past week, waking only once in a great while for food or medicine. Nersa sat next to the man and waited for him to wake fully.
\"Where am I?\" The confused youth asked groggily. Nersa was taken slightly aback (as these were the first words that the youth had spoken since he arrived), and smiled at the attempted bravery; the stranger was apparently not as fearless as he would have liked Nersa to believe.
\"You\'ve got some luck. This cave happens to be the hideout for a band of merciless cutthroats,\" Nersa joked, though his companion didn\'t seem to realize that. \"Who are you?\"
\"Evan Miratus,\" He answered slowly, before he could catch himself. \"Are you going to kill me?\"
\"If we were going to kill you,\" Nersa assured him, \"Do you think you\'d be sleeping in my cot?\" Evan gave a weak half-smile and sat up, grimacing in pain as he did so.
\"Are you really criminals?\" Evan wanted to know. Nersa shook his head and laughed.
\"I was just pulling your leg,\" Nersa answered. \"We\'re adventurers.\" Nersa\'s gaze lingered on the young man before him as the conversation paused. Something in Evan\'s manner made Nersa curious about him. Evan was looking out the enterance of the cave, but seemed to feel the weight of Nersa\'s eyes just the same.
\"Do you have to stare?\" He asked, shifting self-consciously. Nersa looked away, feeling just as uncomfortable. A cold wind whistled through the cave, and Nersa decided to try and start a new fire.
\"How are you feeling?\" Nersa asked, otherwise focused on the task at hand.
\"Like shit,\" Evan replied gloomily, rubbing his head. Nersa nodded, and put down his tools in frustration.
\"I was never good at building fires,\" He muttered under his breath. Turning to Evan, he replied, \"Well, that\'s understandable. You\'ve been asleep for a week.\"
\"A week?\" Evan asked incredulously. Nersa nodded again, rising to his feet.
\"We\'ll give you a a day or so to rest,\" He stated, \"Then we\'ll put you to the test.\" Evan eyed the taller man suspiciously.
\"What kind of test?\" Evan wanted to know.
\"Just a simple mission. You have to get something for us,\" Nersa explained. Giving Evan a quick once-over, Nersa added, \"You\'re small, and you look fast enough.\"
\"What exactly am I supposed to get?\" Evan asked, infuriated by being referred to as \'small\'. Nersa laughed gently.
\"Don\'t worry about that right now,\" He told Evan, patting his shoulder as he walked past.

A/N - Ok, I\'m not entirely pleased with this chapter (or at all pleased, to be honest), especially not the ending. It seems to be lacking something...
Any comments would be appreciated!
