chapter 3
Discalimer: This story is completely original, any similarities with real events or other work of fiction is merely coincidential.
The rush was one of a river, except it flowed between her temples. Though it was not that what woke her up but the incessant poking on her shoulder. “Stop it, or I’ll rip it off.” Jackie heard a fearful gasp accompanied by the absence of the poking. She cracked an eye open, and as light slithered between the lids the rushing became louder and painful.
There was little girl standing beside her with her hand still in the air, positioned for, what she guessed was, poking. “Sorry.” Said she in a tiny voice.
She started to sit up. “No. Don’t. You’ll puke. And you’re facing my way.” She made an imaginary square with her hands, “Aiming zone.” The girl nodded her head vigorously, as if proving a very critical point.
“Who are you?” Jackie asked her as she took into consideration what the child had said, she was in the danger zone.
“My name’s Nat, but mostly known as Ness.” she smiled and tilted her head to the side, much like dogs do when offered a treat. “What’s yours?”
“Jackie.”
“Hi Jackie.” Innocence, she missed how it looked, sounded, felt, spoke. It didn’t exist in her home, her family was found wanted of it.
“Why do you have two names?” was the only thing she could thin k of saying to this child. “What should I call you?”
She shrugged her shoulders, “Whatever you like the most. I don’t have a name anyways. It’s just what people call me.” She shifted the rag doll she was holding in her lap, “They need to call me something so that I know they’re talking to me.”
“What’s the one used the most?”
“Ness, definitely.” Again with the vigorous nodding “All the kids in the Academy use it.”
Academy? “Where am I?” It hit her, she had woken up in a strange room not her one with an unknown child on her bedside. Panic settled in her chest. “Where’s Marvin?”
“Who?”
“My cousin Marvin.” His body lying on the ground in Will’s arms as he wailed to the world. “Where are they?”
Ness looked scared and began to walk backwards, as if not wanting to take her eyes off of the suddenly hysterical lady “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” A few more steps and she would be safely out the door.
Noticing this Jackie leapt forward to grab her “Wait, come back.” The child yelp and with a jump was out the door screaming someone’s name, leaving her all alone in a strange stone room.
