Chenbaro Fuji
The three best friends sat at a small table outside of a little café in town. They were smiling, and laughing, and boy watching, though two of the three girl’s minds were on something else. Well, let’s be honest, Fuji’s mind was on something else as well, but it was nothing nearly as interesting as what Yuki and Shai were thinking.
Yuki was thinking up new ways to get Kago to notice her, while Shai was thinking of the things Mr. Tennison had done to her at tennis practice the other day. Fuji was thinking about her English homework and wondering if she had broken down the sentences in the correct formula. She shuddered at the thought and began to excuse herself so she could go and fix the homework, but re-thought that strategy out. She was supposed to be enjoying her weekend with her best friend’s, not rushing off to re-do homework she had already finished.
“Fuji,” Yuki called softly, her eyes suddenly focused on a figure across the street. “That guy over there is totally digging you.”
Fuji turned around, even while Yuki hissed, “Don’t look,” and focused on the ‘guy across the street’. Even Fuji nearly tumbled over when here legs went weak from shock and her heart began to pound with an efficiency she had not felt before. She slid her eyes slowly away, not wanting to make eye contact with the gorgeous creature, but his face was permanently etched on her mind. He had the chiseled features of a man who played sports, while not being too bulky like a football player. He had dark brown hair that was cut so it fell elegantly around his face, but was out of his eyes, and shorter in the back. His eyes were the same shade of aqua marine as Fuji’s, and he was perfect.
“He’s coming over,” Shai hissed quietly across the table.
“He can not be,” Fuji shook her head, reaching for her glass to take a sip, but instead went for her spoon. She looked into the reflective surface of the silver to see him walking towards the girls, a friend of his following closely behind.
“Looks like he thinks you are pretty,” Yuki said, half-jealous, and half-teasing. “Come on Shai, we have to get moving.”
“What?” Fuji nearly screamed. Realizing the pitch her voice had taken she lowered her voice a few octaves. “You can not leave me now.”
“We’ll meet you in the music store,” Yuki said, and then she and Shai hurried off to leave Fuji to fend for herself.
Fuji began to stand, unaware of how to handle a man on her own, and unaccustomed to her friend’s leaving it to do it herself. Usually when a man came to flirt with the girl she was surrounded by her friends, and it gave her courage to be polite and blow him off. This man, he was different, and she did not have the courage to say yes or no, because she did not know what she was leaping into, head first.
“Hello,” he said, and his voice was like a love song playing against her heart. She could not believe the way she was feeling over just one simple word.
She turned to him, to look up in those aquamarine eyes that were so like hers, at those lips with a smile that could melt hearts, and panties right off of girls. She barely squeaked out, “Hi,” before nearly having to sit down once more. She pretended there was a steel rod in her spine and hurried to stand up straight and meet his gaze.
“I’m sorry, I am not usually this forward, but I saw you from across the street, and noticed you were reading Elizabeth Haydon’s, Symphony of Ages series,” he said to her. Somehow Fuji’s heart sank and she did not know why she had been so foolish as to think a handsome man like him would come over just to meet her. She picked up the book she had nearly left on the table and showed him the cover of, Destiny.
“Yes,” she said, hugging it to her breasts. “It is one of my favorite series’. Rhapsody’s naivety makes her the perfect heroine.”
The man crossed his arms against his chest and leaned against the table, and she even noticed him looking her up and down appreciatively. “I’ve never read it,” he said honestly. “My sister has, and bugs me to, but I always thought it was a little too feminine for me.”
“Oh,” Fuji said lamely. Why could she not think with this beautiful stranger looking at her that way? “Then why did you come over?”
“Because I needed an excuse to talk to you,” he said, gripping the edge of the table tightly. “You are beautiful, and you look like someone who might be a little more intelligent than a typical girl, and I just had to meet you.”
“I’m Fuji, Chenbaro Fuji,” she offered her hand, taking control of her own thoughts and body once more.
The guy looked down at her, a bit pleased with himself, and even more pleased with her. “I am Amatsu. Inperiaru Amatsu.”
“Well Inperiaru Amatsu, it is my pleasure to meet you.”
“No, I assure you, the pleasure is all mine.”
