Chapter 3

Where the Fish Swim

Chapter 3

As I watch the blood slowly drip into its expanding puddle, I feel suddenly sick. Kari is covering her mouth with both hands and tears are glistening as the flow freely from her fragile eyes in small pulses. As the others around me start to scream, cry, and panic, my world starts to spin and I keel over and vomit profusely onto the tatami mat. My vomit mixes with the pool of blood and I vomit again at the disgusting sight.

I finish vomiting and feel a small hand gently rest on my shoulder. I look up and see the tear soaked face of Kari. I expected to see fear and panic in her face, but all I saw was concern…concern for me.

“Are you ok Kiroshi?” she asks with concern clearly apparent in her voice.

I look up and nod.

“I’ll be ok, but something is going on. I’m not sure exactly what has conspired, but we must go get the village elder immediately!”

“Right” she says as I grab her hand and we both run off into the village.

When we exit the building I am immediately struck with the feeling that something is wrong. The usually bustling village is completely silent and devoid of a single soul.

“Wha…What is going on here? Where is everyone?” says Kari with concern clearly present in her voice.

“I’m not sure Kari, but I don’t like it. First the blood and now the village is deserted. Something is definitely wrong.” I said while holding Kari’s trembling hand.

After taking a few steps Kari looks at me confused. I don’t have to ask what is confusing her because I already know. Even though it is a sunny day, the ground is wet. What is even more confusing is that the ground seems sticky. We look at each other and our eyes grow wide as we smell that familiar smell once again. Blood is in the air. At this realization, Kari starts to tear up and starts to run off towards her house. Knowing that this was not a time to be splitting up, I hurry after her.

As I trail Kari to the edge of her home, she suddenly stops. As I catch up with her, I am about to ask why she stopped when my question is answered by the scene before me. The front door to the house has been completely ripped off and thrown across the yard. The animals are all strewn about the yard with pieces missing from them and their blood staining the earth. The most horrific sight here is not the animal slaughter, but the figure in front of the doorway. There in the entry lay the headless body of none other than the Father of Kari.

Kari is overcome with horror and dashes into her house. Giving the body of her father one last glance, I charge into the house after her.

I run from room to room looking for Kari, but with no success. After searching the entire first floor, I run up the stairs to the second floor. As I round the corner, I see Kari kneeling down on the floor with her hands over her mouth. Tears are streaming freely down her pale face. As I slowly walk up to her my world suddenly freezes as a sickly feeling invades my entire being. In front of Kari lay her mom’s torso. Several feet to the side of the torso lay the top half of my mother, her eyes still wide in fear as her mouth is open in an eternal scream that never will be heard. The waist of her kimono is torn and the torn edge is soaked in fresh blood. Trailing out of the ripped edge are her torn intestines. They are strewn about the room in what appears to be the path of a drunken snake and seem to go out the window.

The air seems to have been taken from my lungs. My whole body feels cold as if there is ice water in my veins. My whole reality is spinning as my mind processes the unthinkable.

Suddenly Kari softly speaks from behind me. ”How could this happen? What would do such a horrible act?”

I was wondering these same thoughts. Before I got a chance to really ponder these things, my mother jerks forward. I jump back in shock as I look upon my mother’s body, which is starting to slide across the floor. It takes me a moment to realize that my mom isn’t moving on her own accord, but is being pulled by her intestines. Something outside the window is pulling them.

The intestines suddenly snag the window glass still in the frame and rip open. The moment the intestines rip, blood splatters across the room. As horrified as I am, I must know what is doing this. I stand on shaky legs as I slowly walk to the window. As I peer out the window, I am greeted with the sight of a creature biting my dad’s head in half with a sickening “crunch”.

The creature eating the remains of my father is like none I have seen before. It stands at about ten feet tall. It appears to be some sort of skeleton with the muscles filling the inner body..

As I look down at it, it must have seen me. I t turns it’s ugly head up towards the window and stares.. I stare back into it’s eyes momentarily and then rush back to Kari as the creature jumps in the broken window and stares at us. As it stares at us, I stand in front of Kari who is now paralyzed with fear.

The creature emits a gurgling growl and suddenly charges. Before I have time to react, I am struck with the claws of the creature and flung back into the wall. As I hit the wall the pang of pain spreads throughout my body a I feel the warm flow of blood come out of the new cuts across my chest. The terrified scream of Kari breaks my warm daze. I look up and see that the beast is almost upon her.

Against all survival instinct and all logic, I rush towards Kari. I jump between the beast and her and stand there. The beast then raises it’s huge clawed hand to strike. The first blow didn’t kill me, but at this range it can’t fail. I don’t move. I can’t just leave Kari.

I close my eyes and brace for the final blow, but I suddenly feel a warm feeling and am surrounded in an all-enveloping light.
