“Are you sure this is safe.” Kali said with a shaky voice. She was sitting on her horse, called Duke, scared to death.
“I’m sure you’re safe.” He said confidentially to her. “Are you ready to move?”
“No not just yet.” She said. Actually she had been saying this about 10 minutes ago, too.
“OK tell me when you’re ready.” He said patiently.
He had been patient all afternoon with her. At first she was too scared to even touch the horse. When he told her for the millionth time that it wasn’t going to hurt her she managed to get the courage to pet it. When they saddled the horse he had her watch as he tightened the girth, he had her try, even though she was hesitant. Nathan bridled the horse for her and led her and the horse out to the ring. With that he gave her encouraging words until she had the guts to climb onto his back. He even gave her a leg up so she didn’t have to struggle onto the horses back. She had been extremely scared when she had first climbed on, because she had been ready for the horse to bolt. But to her surprise and delight, he didn’t, actually Duke just stood there.
A couple minutes later she though she was ready, her heart had regained its steady beat and she felt a little more relaxed than she first had. Nate had been incredibly nice this whole time and freakishly patient. She couldn’t keep her eyes off his body either. He was really gorgeous. She stared at his ripped body with awe. He had even caught her staring at him once. That had caused her to blush, madly.
With a sigh she said. “I think I’m ready.” He smiled his encouragement and rode his horse over to her.
“Ok so when you’re ready, nudge Duke with your legs and he will walk.”
She took a deep breath and pushed her legs gently on Duke. He started to walk, slowly. How could she have been so afraid of this! She just HAD to make a total fool of herself. Nate was sitting on his horse that was walking right by her and he grinned.
“Now was that so bad?” He asked.
“No, but I guess, I might have been overreacting, I mean it’s been a long time since I’ve been on a horse and… well I wasn’t sure what to do…”
“It’s ok I’m proud you for just getting on the horse, by the looks you were giving me and the horse eailier today I would of thought you would’ve quit by now.”
“Your confidence in me is charming.” She said sarcastically.
Laughing he said, “So you want to try and trot your horse?”
“Er… ok… are you sure I’ll be ok.”
“I do this everyday; Duke won’t do anything you don’t want him to.”
“Ok, well… ok.”
“Ok kiss to Duke and nudge him with your legs again.”
She did as she was told and Duke trotted very slowly for her. She liked that Nate was by her side through all of this. He had been so nice to help her, but right now he was staring at her lips.
Nate watched Kali kiss her lips to Duke and found that he couldn’t get his eyes off them. Her lips looked so soft and full. He had only met her yesterday but he felt so much ease with her. She was very pretty; her light green eyes had sent a funny feeling through him. He knew the moment he saw her that he had to get to know her better. All this stuff might sound too mushy for him with other girls but the first time he touched her he knew she had the same feelings too, well he hoped she did at least. That is why he had asked her to come and ride horses with him. He decided he wanted to spend time with her, even though, they had only known each other for a couple of hours. Nate was brought back from his thought by Kali asking him a question.
“How do you stop this thing?” She asked.
“Say whhhooooaaa and pull back on the reigns a little bit to tell him to stop.”
“Ok thanks.” She said while bringing him to a stop.
“Do you think you would like to go on a trail ride?” He asked her.
“Trail…ride.” She said like she didn’t have any idea of what that was.
“It’s just going outside and riding on a trail, it sort of implys that in the name.” He said, smiling.
“Oh ok, yeah I think I’d like that.” She said. The truth was she really was charmed by him. Even though she didn’t really show she was excited to be with him, she was. She wanted to get to know him, very badly. And she had all summer to do it.
He led her to the large door of the ring where they could exit without getting off of the horse. There, they took a trail that fit two horses easily on it. They rode side by side.
“So tell me something about yourself.” Kali broke the silence.
“What would you like to know?”
“I don’t know anything, like how long have you worked here or something really embarrassing.” She said.
“How about you ask me one that I have to answer and then I ask you something that you have to answer.”
“Ok sounds like a deal.” She really wanted to tell him everything about her, and him to everything to her. She really liked talking to him, and he was absolutely gorgeous. She felt, awed in his presence, like he knew something more than he would ever tell. This added to her curiosity of him.
“Good, you start?”
“Alright, how long have you worked here?” She asked.
“All my life, my family owns the ranch, Eddie is my father, I have a few brothers and a sister and my moms name is Kathy. The reason you don’t see them today is because they are at a rodeo.”
“Wow that is so great, I always wondered what it would be like to have one of those ‘farm’ families. You know... I\'ve never seen a rodeo... or even been remotly close to one... They look pretty intresting. ”
“Yeah, they are, maybe you would like to come see one one day? My treat. I’ve loved it since the day I was born. Speakin of which, where did you move from?\"
“Long Island, the country side is very calming to me. I got tired of the cramped homes and going into New York all the time.” She said truthfully.
New York was seriously just too much for her these days. She also was estatic to get away from the city; it was too polluted... figurativly and literally.
“Well I hope you’ll like it a lot here.”
“Thanks, I hope I do too. Sooo... What is the craziest thing you have ever done?”
“Hmmm, I can’t tell you, I swore to keep it secret and it’s not something I am to proud of.”
“Well, I guess that’s ok but I get a ‘get out of jail free’ card to for a question I don’t like, then.” She compromised.
By now they had gone farther into the plains and she noticed that it was very hot out. It really was pretty land. Yellow and green grass covered it and you could see for miles. A river ran right by them, and on the other side of the river was a forest trail. There was a bridge to their left. They turned around here, and went back on the trail that they came on before.
“Why don’t you tell me about your family?”
Nate knew the second he had asked that question that it had been a bad decision. He saw a sad look pass over her face and he felt bad, very bad. But Kali sucked it up and told him as much as she could without giving everything away.
“I used to live with both of my parents until I was about 10, then my dad left us, and married, someone else. My mom was left with 3 children, my brother who is the oldest, my older sister, and myself. My dad is a bad person, he used to drink and…”
“Oh I’m so sorry.” he said sincerely, effectively cutting her off.
“It’s ok really. I have to talk about it sometimes, so in way you helped me, every time I talk about it, it gets easier.”
“Well I shouldn’t make you talk about things that make you uncomfortable.”
“It’s fine really.” She said. But he knew she really wasn’t fine with it, he had hit a tender spot. Nate truly felt horrible about it and decided to stay away from family issues for now.
“So,” He said to lighten up the mood that had settled down on them. “What’s the funniest thing you have done to a stranger?”
Kali burst out laughing at this. She must have done something really funny then, if just thinking about it makes her laugh, he thought. He grinned at her
The rest of the trail ride they talked about funny and stupid things, she was so happy that they had related so well to each other. He had respected her when she didn’t want to talk about her family and he had a great sense of humor. She would conquer her fear of horses 80 times over again just to spend another day with Nathan.
