Jimmy's Girl

She the last books and shoved them at him, quickly standing up and walking to class.

Devin was walking on air. She’d spoken to him! She’d said, “Oh I’m so sorry” and she’d said… well, that was all she’d said, but still! It had to be some kind of sign, that he met her within his first week of high school. His grin almost split his face. High school was going to be so terrific!

A few weeks later…

Regina swung into the football players locker room to meet Jimmy, who she’d picked as her boyfriend.

The locker room was empty. She glanced at the clock. Early.

“Morons!” she whirled around and saw a figure scrunched up behind some lockers in a little alcove, engrossed in a book. Deciphering that the ‘morons!’ wasn’t to her, or rather to the book, she walked over.

“Hey”

The figure lifted its head and blinked bemusedly, in a just-returning-to-the-here-and-now way.

“Oh, you, hi” she smiled a little. It was the freshman from in front of the bathroom.

He smiled, showing white teeth, and she smiled widely back: his grin was infectious.

Devin felt like a he had been punched in the gut when she smiled, a feeling that was getting common when he was around her. He opened his mouth and stuttered, “h-hi”

“Can I sit?”

He nodded dumbly.

“Watcha reading?” she asked, friendly.

“Uh, well it’s this mystery novel, about – well, there’s this guy and his aunt…”

Several minutes later Regina was laughing so hard she was afraid she was ruining her make up.

Devin was grinning, finally at ease.

“So, who are morons?”

“Huh?”

“When I came in here…”

“Ohh… I said that? I sometimes get a little carried away. It’s just these people, they’re running around trying to catch this guy, and right in front of them… it’s so obvious, it’s unrealistic actually”

Regina smiled uncertainly, thinking, it is?

“What’s your name?” she suddenly realized she didn’t know yet.

“Devin Williams”

“Regina Jackson”

“I know” he blurted, then blushed.

“How do you know my name?” she smiled, he was actually blushing!

“Oh, um I heard it somewhere…” he flushed and blurted out, “so after the incident in the warehouse the uncle goes and confronts the clergyman…”

“Hey Jimmy, you coming to Kelley’s?” Kelley’s was a hangout for the entire high school.

“Sorry man, I’m taking my girlfriend to the movies…” he grinned, and everyone catcalled and slapped his back.

“That chick, Regina Johnson?”

“Yeah, man, I call her Gin cause, man, is she INTOXICATING!” everyone laughed at his clever joke.

“Oooh-ooh! She is HOT!”

Jimmy basked in the pats and even envious glances from a few JUNIORS. It was all going his way, he was the prodigy of the team and his girlfriend was the hottest number he’d ever seen, except in –

He froze as they turned around the corner and were met with the site of Regina smiling and laughing at some scrawny bastard. They looked up and Gin smiled flounced to him.

“Jimmy, sweetie, had a good practice?” she tried to sound more stupid, as she did around him, but she could feel Devin’s eyes on her back and for some reason she didn’t want him to think her stupid…

“Yeah. Babe, meet the team” he said shortly, and she was immediately surrounded by football players shaking her hand, patting her ass and introducing themselves. It was like she was in a thicket of trees, she could even see Devin, or Jimmy anymore.

Devin had felt an unbeatable fatality when she had skipped to Jimmy’s side… One more thing he wanted that Jimmy had. He bookmarked his book and put it in his bag. When he looked up again Jimmy was descending on him, three burly guys behind him.

“Listen scrawny, you stay away from my girl, you got that” his fist lifted and –

“Hey,” burly on the right spoke up, “that’s Coach Williams’ runt son” the fist froze. Jimmy dropped Devin hard. He glared down on him and then stomped away, burlies following.

Devin stumbled to his feet and grabbed his backpack and left.

Regina finally untangled herself from the mass of sweaty muscle and looked around for Devin.

“Looking for someone?” she turned and met Jimmy’s chest.

“Sure, you honey” she smiled winningly and his features relaxed into a grin and he grabbed her to him in a bone crushing kiss, tongue in full working order. She thought, “like hugging a soggy cornchip” Everyone cheered and hooted, and finally Jimmy released her and returned guy looks with his teammates.

“Ohh, sweetie, now I’m all sweaty…”

“Hell, babe, I’ll share the shower” Jimmy grinned and everyone guffawed.

She smiled charmingly, “I’ll wait outside” and swung out with a lot of flip in her skirt.
