Three

He wrapped his arms around me and my world ceased to exist. There was only him and the power that surrounded us.

He held me tightly to him and I felt my feet leave the ground. Upward we went, above the fog. I could see the lights of the streetlamps grow smaller and fainter as we ascended toward the heavens. His cloak swirled and flapped around us like that of huge wings. I thought to myself that perhaps they were…..

Before I knew it, we were descending, coming to rest gently at the foot of an enormous structure. It was a symphony of arches and spires, reaching and stabbing at the sky.

“Behold your new home,” he said, “It took the best masons and carpenters countless seasons to complete it. And now it is yours to enjoy.”

“For me?,” I asked, completely awestruck by the magnificence of this new place, “you built this for me?”

“For us, my beauty, for us,” and with that he led me up a seemingly endless flight of steps to the entrance.

The doors to this palace were twenty feet tall, hewn from the blackest wood I had ever seen and engraved upon their faces were twin dragons, back to back. Their eyes were inlaid sapphires the size of my fists. I reached out to touch one and the doors swung slowly open.

I couldn’t believe my eyes!!! The foyer was like a huge cavern, the sound of our footsteps echoed back from everywhere. Crystal chandeliers and pewter wall sconces lit our path to a majestic staircase that spiraled up to the floors above.

We climbed the stairs to the second floor and circled around to the left. It was a bit darker here, so I followed closely behind my beloved. We came to a stop in front of the last of about twelve doors. Again, there were dragons carved into the door. This he opened with but a touch of a hand. It slid silently open and revealed what was to be our quarters.

I started to walk around Ladislao and into the room. He stopped me with a look.

“You have reached the point of no return, Elianna. Once you pass over this threshold, the life you know will be changed forever.”

“My life changed the moment I saw you,” I said, and stepped through the door.

Ladislao followed me through the door and it closed unnoticed. I walked to the only light in the room; moonlight streaming in through a window.

I heard Ladislao’s cloak fall to the floor behind me, and my heart began to pound. He snapped his fingers and a fire exploded to life in the fireplace on the adjoining wall. His approaching footsteps were muffled by a large Turkish rug, I nearly ran right into him when I whirled around toward the fire.

He caught my elbows in his hands, and I could feel the heat of them through my cloak. I watched as his hands slid up my arms, and across my shoulders, finally coming to rest on the clasp at my throat. With a flick of his wrist, my cloak was a pool of cloth at my feet.
