Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Bryan ran as fast as he could through the dark corridor but he wasn't getting any closer to the door at the far end. There was something there, something important that he had to get to. He didn't know what it was, he just knew that he needed it. Suddenly the sound of breaking glass echoed behind him, and then there was the sound of a woman screaming. There was a gunshot, and the screaming stopped. Bryan continued to run, still trying to reach the door at the end of the hallway. Someone began to laugh. It was a cold, humorless laugh, there was the sound of a new clip being loaded into a gun. Then there was a "˜bang', so loud it shook the walls, and Bryan fell to the floor, blood dripping from a wound in his left leg.

Bryan woke with a start. There was sweat dripping off his forehead and his breathing was harsh. He had that dragaiagain, the memory that wouldn't leave him no matter how hard he tried to erase it from his mind. After he calmed himself a little he looked around and realized something. He didn't recognize the room he was in, he looked around and tried to remember where he was. The room was lighted by buzzing florescent bulbs, the mattress beneath him was had and anything but comfortable, the room smelled like ammonia, and there was blood on his jacket.
Oh, right the hospital... Jamie. "Jamie!" He exclaimed, and jumped off the small bed he had slept on. He stopped right as his hand grasped the door handle. There was blood on his jacket and he probably looked like he had just murdered someone. He normally wouldn't have given a damn what he looked like, but there was no way he was going to scare the poor girl by walking in to her room looking like death.
There was a small door which lead to what he supposed was a bathroom. He entered the room and flicked the light switch. The tiny room was illuminated by the light from a single, bare lightbulb, which gave Bryan just enough light to examine his reflection. He had been right, he did look like death. His hair was sticking up at odd angles from sleeping on it wrong. There was sweat on his brow and a smudge of dirt on his left cheek. And, there was dried blood from Jamie's wrist on the front of his jacket.
He stripped of the jacket, revealing his tight, dark red t-shirt underneath. He tossed the jacket on to the toilet and turned on the water in the sink. He splashed his face with cold water to wash away the sweat and dirt. He ran his wet hands through his hair in an effort to tame it, and only partiasuccsucceeded. Sighing he picked up his jacket and dug around in the pockets for his cigarettes and lighter. After finding them he put them in the pocket of his jeans and dropped the jacket on to the bathroom floor. It could stay there for all he cared, he had another one at home.
He turned to the door and nearly jumped out of his skin. Nurse Anne stood in the doorway, her hands on her hips and her foot was tapping impatiently. "What are you doing up?" Bryan just stared at her, so she continued. "I came in here to check up on you, and I find you here, looking as if you're getting ready to go somewhere." Bryan raised an eyebrow and she scowled at him. "You have only been asleep for four hours. You were exhausted when you came in here so I want you to get your ass back on that bed and go to sleep."
"I was asleep for four hours? Wow, I can't remember the last time I slept for that long at one time." He said dryly. "And I wasn't planning on going anywhere. I was going to check on Jamie and plant my "˜ass', as you so delicately put it, in a chair next to her bed. So if you would be so kind as to move..." He let his voice trail off, his right hand gestured toward the door. Anne stepped aside and Bryan brushed past her. Heked ked out of the small hospital room and found himself in a hallway that reminded him of his dream. He shivered slightly and walked toward the main lobby.
Jamie's room was easy to find because it was the only one with the door closed. He opened the door and slipped it inside, closing the door softly behind him. The curtains around her bed were not drawn closed and Bryan could see her face clearly. She looked so pale. An IV was connected to her right wrist, and her left was heavily bandaged. Bryan pulled a chair from the corner of the room and placed it next to her bed. In a sudden urge for privacy, Bryan pulled the curtains around her bed shut. Then he sat down next to her bed, put his head in his hands, and did something he hadn't done for a long time. He prayed.
