The Wonder

Jason was the first of the two guys to arrive. He had brought his walking stick only because he hadn’t known who had called him. The night was colder than usual, but the stars seemed to shine brighter than he had ever seen. The moon cast an eerie glow on the park and so far he couldn’t see who had called him at this ridiculous time of night. Jason didn’t live far from the park the stranger had described to him, so he had walked about a quarter of a mile to get there.
He walked around the park for a few minutes and saw a car turn in to the parking lot. Jason was ready to fight if he had to. He wasn’t a weakling. He wasn’t going to run. He stood and watched as someone emerged from the car. He let out the breath he had been holding. It was only one of his friends, Austin.
They looked at each other for a moment and burst into relieved laughter. Jason was the first of the two to stop laughing.
“Why are you here anyway?” he asked as Austin calmed his laughter.
“Phone call.” Austin said “The number looked familiar. You?”
“Same, only the number didn’t look so familiar.” Jason said thinking for a second.
They sat on the swings facing the parking lot and shrugged.
“Glad the two of you could make it.”
Both Jason and Austin turned to see who had joined them. The figure was small. It was obviously a girl by the way she walked. She had red hair and was wearing the same old letter jacket she always did. The guys took a quick glance at one another then back at sophomore who had called them here.
“I’m breaking curfew for you. You had better have an explanation.” Jason said a bit oe ane angry side. He was still half asleep, and freezing.
“Aren’t the stars beautiful tonight?” she asked ignoring them for moment. “They really are wonderful. Look at that moon! Have you ever seen it so big, so close and . . .” she trailed off in a sigh staring at the black sky littered with diamonds.
Austin was confused. “I thought you wanted tot talk.” He said trying to get something to explain why they were there.
“Talk?” she asked thinking a moment. “Oh yeah… How could I forget?” she turned to face them with the hunting knife in her hand. Sharp and pointy the knife glowed in the eerie moonlight. Both Austin and Jason backed up a few inches.
Either one of them could take her on and win within seconds but they didn’t want to take that chance now.
“What the fuck?” was all they could manage.
