Romance Blossoms
Chapter 3: Romance blossoms
The next few pints passed uneventfully. The four girls became inseparable. They were always together, always whispering and always sharing secrets with each other. Rorie could not ever remember being as happy as she was these past pints. The girls practiced their magic together and became stronger than they realized they could ever be. One morning they even wished together that a rainstorm would come so they would not have to participate in a weekly game of crackle ball. They sat in line waiting to be picked for one of the teams and they joined hands as they frequently did. They had started doing this to make the girls believe that they were involved with each other and to help keep to themselves. As soon as their hands were joined the sky became dark and lightning rose up from the earth. The wind rose higher and stronger and with a loud clap of thunder the rain began to cascade down around them. The four girls stood slowly following the mob of sodden girls back into the castle. Each was smiling and they never let go of the other’s hands.
Inside their room they were very happy. They placed silencing charms on the room they shared and would practice their spells and incantations deep into the circle. By the end of three septs the girls were able to use May’s power to coat the walls and floor with sand from thin air. Then Trella would use her power to put a thin sheet of pure invisible air over the sand. In the center of the room Rorie would light a small fire. Then Ray would fill the room with water and it would touch nothing but the girls themselves. The four elementals would swim until they were too weary to speak. The four would then clear the room of the earth air water and fire and push their four mattresses together and sleep. No one in the castle ever expected how close the girls were becoming.
Rorie woke to a quiet sniffling sound. Ray was crumpled in a heap at the foot of the four beds sobbing softly. Quietly Rorie slipped out from under the quilts and slowly made her way over to where Ray was crying. Rorie had become accustomed to comforting ray in the first lights of morning. She often had to hold the other girl in her arms for hours before she finally became still and slept. Rorie never asked Ray why it was she was crying and Ray was grateful to her. She wept for the parents she had never known. She wept for the friends she had left behind in her old realm, but most of all she wept for the love that she longed to express. She was terrified that if she were ever to speak of her true feelings the other girls would cast her out. Sometimes Rorie would sob silently with Ray. For she too felt a love greater than she had ever known. She too loved another and was too afraid to speak her mind.
Sniffling quietly and whipping her eyes Ray sat up and looked into Rorie’s eyes. “Thank you for…um…that” she whispered hoping not to wake the other two up. “No problem” Rorie said trying not to let her own tears be seen in the dim, flickering candlelight. The two girls stared into one another’s eyes. Each knowing what the other was feeling. Each knowing the other’s reason for tears. Rorie swallowed hard and noticed that her mouth suddenly felt very dry and her palms were beginning to shimmer with sweat. She was still holding Ray tightly in her arms. Ray opened her mouth to speak, blushing slightly. But no sound came out and she looked away for a moment before locking gazes with Rorie again. Rorie brushed a lose strand of raven hair out of Ray’s face and smiled shyly. At the same moment both girls leaned closer to one another and their lips brushed against each other’s slightly. Ray pulled away and looked into Rorie’s eyes and they both leaned in once again. This time the kiss was more passionate. They had been longing for this moment for such a long time. Each girl’s mind was racing. Thoughts of love and sex and what ifs flashed by. At that moment May sat straight up in the bed Yawning loudly. The girls jumped apart and picked up a schoolbook that was lying nearby pretending to be studying. May looked down at the two who’s heads were stuck in the book. “Good girls always study” she sneered at them before heading off towards the water room to get cleaned for school. Trella remained in the bed. She had seen the whole scene that had taken place. “This can not go on,” she thought sadly to herself. “I will not let anyone hurt Ray again.”
