Zack glared at his injured leg. Dawn had placed him on bed rest till he could walk without a limp; the pain was gone only for that day. Damn. He glanced out the window; the snow was still going crazy. He sighed. “Araghhhh! I’m so fucking bored!”

There was a laugh from the door and he saw Ray. “Hi. Thought I’d come play a game with you.” He held up a checkers game.

“Right bring one that I’d never beat you at.”

“It’s been forever so don’t worry. You might beat me.” They picked their colors and set the board up.

“I go first.” He moved and Ray smiled as he moved one of his. “So why are you here?”

“Hmmm, I need someone to talk to, plus Rune would kick my ass if I played against him.”

Zack sighed as he moved another piece and muttered, “You just want to kick mine.”

“Not really.” He jumped Zack’s piece and sat it off to the side. “I need advice.”

“On?”

“I met someone.”

It grew quiet, Zack’s red eyes were locked on the board and he moved. When he pulled his hand back he asked, “Male or female?”

“Male.” The black piece moved and then Zack sighed.

“Go on.”

“He’s okay. It’s just I don’t know what to do.”

Zack looked up at Ray. “Explain.” His piece moved.

“You know I like girls I mean I’ve always been with girls.” Ray’s piece moved. “I think I might like him.”

“I see.”

“I’m confused.”

“I figured since you always play checkers when you are.”

“I miss having someone to talk to. Mom and dad wouldn’t understand since they want me to be perfect.”

“So what’s he like.”

“He’s about the same height as Rune maybe taller.”

“What else?”

“He’s on the soccer team. Is always surrounded by girls and is the most popular person in the school, while I’m the one who knows people but only has a few friends.”

Zack glared at the board when Ray took two of his pieces, “Damn. So you have talked to him?”

“Yes. I got into it with another asshole. He pulled me off before I started to beat the shit out of the guy with a book.”

“Whoa, little guy moved you.”

“I’m not that heavy. I only weigh one…” he glanced up at the ceiling, “thirty? I think it’s been awhile.”

“What are you doing? Not eating.”

“No I eat… Mom hates it. She says I’m going to get fat.”

“Bullshit. She just wants you to be her image son. I can’t because of what happened to me.”

“Do you still have nightmares?”

“Always.” He sighed and smiled. “Now tell me more about this person.”

“Okay.”

“And then I’ll tell you if you need to go talk to Rune.”

He sighed, “Fine.”
~~~~
Rune laid on the bed staring at the ceiling, he was in a room down stairs and Dawn was looking at him. “Okay, Rune. Let’s try this one more time.”
“Okay.” She smiled.
“I’m going to say a word I want you to say the first thing that comes to mind.”
“Okay.”
“Fun.”
“Animals.”
“Love.”
“Keir.”
“Hate.”
“Basement.”
“Funny.”
“Sunny.”
“Sad.”
“Lonely.”
“Life.”
“Death.”
“Scared.”
“Blood.”
“Fight.”
“Live.”
“Anger.”
“…”
“Rune?” He looked at her.
“Yeah.”
“You okay?” He smiled and nodded. “You want to talk.”
“When you said anger I couldn’t think of anything.”
“I see.”
Rune turned his head and went back to looking at the ceiling. She looked at the machine that was beeping. “Momma Dawn.”
“Yes Rune.”
“I can’t hear him anymore.”
“Who?”
“Fear.”
“Who’s Fear?”
“The voice. He makes the scary things go away. It’s kind of lonely now, but I guess it’s good.”
“Rune.”
“Hmmm…”
“Tell me about him.”
He sat up and grinned, “Okay. I guess you could say he’s everything I’m not. He’s not afraid of anything except for the death. He’s always saying ‘get over it.’ But I couldn’t do it. So he helps me out, he’s got red eyes and looks like me. I wonder if he’s asleep.”
“Asleep?”
“Yeah he said he was going to sleep for a long time.” His feet played at the floor as he talked. “Told me to stay here and forget about my mom, to live my life the way I wanted. But he’s always there, even when I sleep. Then we talk till I wake up, now it’s quiet and I miss it.”
“You think he’ll be back?”
“I don’t know.”
Dawn smiled and leaned forward. “So what was the last thing he told you.”
“We talked about me and Zack. He was telling me how we have almost the same DNA makeup, the same animal DNA and everything. But he couldn’t figure out why mine is dormant and Zack’s isn’t.” His eyebrows drew closer causing winkles to form on his forehead. “It’s confusing to me also. He kept on going into how mine was slowly waking up, and he couldn’t tell when it would be fully awake or what would happen.”
“So this DNA is not active?”
“Yeah… but now it’s waking up.” Rune gave a sad smile. “I’m scared of what would happen.”
“Whatever happens we’ll be there.”
“Thanks.”
There was a knock at the door, “Yes.”
Caden walked in. “There you are I’ve been looking for you.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, we need to talk.”
“Okay.” She stood up and looked at Rune. “We’ll talk later okay.”
The door closed and he looked at the ground, it was just like the institute. Talk, talk, talk, he covered his face. It won’t help, it never will help. There was a hand on his shoulder and he quickly turned around. Keir slipped his arms around his shoulders and hugged him.
“You okay?”
“I’m fine.”
His chin rested on his head. “Doesn’t look like it.”
“I know.”
Rune found himself up in the air and in Keir’s arms. “Come on.”
“Where are we going?”
“You’ll see.”
~~~~

Zack glared at the board, his brother had beating him three times. “Damn it.”

“Looks like I still have it.”

“Damn you.”

“Stop being a sour puss.” He was setting the game up again. “So what should I do?”

“Don’t jump too soon and if you want to know how to find out if he likes you go ask Rune. He’s better at this stuff than I am.”

“The game or the dating.”

He glared at him.

“I’ll take that as both.”

“Go talk to Rune!”

“Fine.” He pushed the pieces into the box and folded the board up. “I’ll go talk to Rune.”

Ray had made it to the door when Zack called out. He turned around, “Good luck.”

He smiled and nodded.
~~~~
Rune found himself in the bathroom. Keir was filling the very big tub with water and making sure it was warm enough. “There.” He turned the water off and looked at Rune. “Cloths off.”
“O-okay.” He watched as the small male blushed and pulled his shirt off. His pants fell to the ground and then his underwear followed. A smirk found its way on his lips and he moved over. “What are you d-doing?”
He kissed his stomach and then he rubbed his thumb over the barcode tattoo on his left hip. “Relax okay?”
“Okay.” He stifled a moan when Keir brushed his fingers over his back and down his spine.
Pulling away he picked the small male up and placed him in the tub. “I’ll be right back, so relax.” When the door closed he turned bright red and covered his face.
“Okay, relax. Relax. Relax.” It wasn’t working. There was a knock at the door that caused Rune to jump. “C-come in.” The door opened and he saw Ray poke his head in.”Damn it, Ray! Don’t do that.”
“Sorry, Rune.” He walked into the bathroom and closed the door. “I need to talk to you.”
“About?”
“I think I like a guy.” Rune just looked at him. “Zack said you could help.” The small male sighed and sunk lower in the water.
“Okay what is this person’s name?”
“Robert.”
“What is he like?”
“Nice.” His head tipped to the side when Rune just looked at him. “He plays soccer.”
“Really?”
“Yeah, he’s really good.”
"That's good.”
“Really?”
He saw the frown, “Sorry. He started talking to me… it was at lunch. I was alone because my ex-girlfriend broke up with me. Said I was too random and needed to grow up.”
“She has a point. Nice tongue ring by the way.”
“How?”
“Nuri heard the whole argument and then told me.”
He rubbed the back of his head, “Heh, sorry.” The younger male lowered the toilet lid and sat down.
“Tell me more.”
“He sits with me at lunch and he talks, I listen.” The board game was sitting on his lap. “He’s really good and he helped me out when I got into a fight.”
“What do you want to know?” He could feel his muscles relaxing.
“I want to know if he likes me or if I’m just some big dare he’s trying to accomplish.”
Rune folded his arms on the ledge of the tub and looked at him. “What day was it when you were taken?”
“A little over a week ago. Why?”
“When you get back if he noticed you missing then he likes you but it also goes both ways, that’s if it was a dare.”
“I see.”
“But if he went to your home every day since you’ve been gone then he might like you or he considers you a really close friend.”
“Either way I don’t know.”
“Yeah. Just don’t jump; it might blow up in your face.”
“Okay.”
“Wait till you move out before you say anything to mom.”
“Got it.”
The door opened and Keir looked at the two of them. “Hey Keir.”
“Yo. I’m going to leave now. Thanks for the advice.”
Keir moved to the side as he walked out and he looked at Rune. “That was the youngest right?”
“Yeah.”
He smiled and sat down where Ray was sitting. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t want the same things that happened to me to happen to him.”
“I doubt it. You should have seen how he handled himself when that one guy held a gun to his head.”
“I guess.”
Rune felt a hand run through his hair and he smiled. “You looked relaxed.”
“Hmmm… if you keep petting my head I’m going to fall asleep.”
The hand stopped and he sighed, he didn’t notice Keir had climbed in till he was pulled closer. He grew red in the face and Keir smirked. “You okay?”
“You really didn’t need to…”
“But I want to.” Keir turned Rune around and pulled him closer to his body. The small male felt his body relax again and he smiled. He figured a bath with Keir would be okay.
^^^^
Zack yawned and with a crutch made his way down the hall. He stopped and looked out the window, the snowfall was starting to slow down. A smile spread across his face it had been almost a week since that attack. Moving faster he went to the kitchen, ‘Mom and dad can finally get the hell out of here.’ Dawn was there looking at a phone on the table. “What is it?”
“It’s Keir’s phone. It keeps buzzing.”
Walking over He picked it up and looked at the name. He flipped it open and his eyes widened.
“Rune!!” The crutch fell and he was running up to the stairs, even with the pain he didn’t stop. Dawn reached over and looked at the phone that Zack had dropped on the counter. It was a text and when she read it her whole body became tensed.
Willow had a premonition. The city is in danger!
