Repent Before You Die

AN: I'm almost done with this story.

When Kyle opened the door to Alex’s apartment, he met a very angry Alex sitting on the couch. Before Alex could say anything, Kyle held up his hand. “Save it. I did what I thought was right, and it was a very enlightening experience.” Kyle continued to tell Eric’s story.

After Kyle was finished, Alex still wore the frown. “That doesn’t make what he did to you okay.”

“I never said it did, but I understand him better. On the way back, I came to a decision. I do not want to file charges against him.” Alex tried to protest, but Kyle wouldn’t have it. “In a way, I feel sorry for him. I think, maybe it’s possible…we could reconcile and become actual brothers again. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but it’s not totally out of the question. We’ve been through too much to just give up on a relationship. I’m the kind of person who always believes in giving second chances. If he really tries, we can make it work.” Kyle took deep breaths to calm his raging emotions.

Alex was not giving in so easily. “It’s his fault you don’t trust me.”

Kyle shook his head. “It’s not strictly his fault. If you truly cared about me, you wouldn’t need all of those partners. If you can’t be fulfilled without them, then we shouldn’t be together. I don’t feel like you care about me.”

Alex gestured. “You don’t feel like I care about you? Are you that clueless? I’m in love with you!”

Both went silent at that admission. Alex looked at his feet, and took a few shallow breaths. He continued almost inaudibly, but nonetheless, Kyle heard him. “I never said that to anyone but family before.”

Kyle was blushing slightly. “Did you mean it though?” He asked in an uncertain voice.

At last, their eyes met. “I have never been so sure of anything else in my life. You know what? You were right. Why do I need all of those other partners?”

Kyle’s heart skipped a beat, and then he ran to Alex, hugging him with all his might. “Do you really mean that?”

“Yes, I got the best thing right here. I don’t need anyone that comes second to you.”

Without feeling any sort of apprehension, Kyle tilted his head up. His lips gently met Alex’s in a sweet kiss before growing more passionate. Kyle’s hands found their way underneath Alex’s short, massaging the soft skin. Alex groaned into the kiss, pressing his clothed nether regions forcefully against Kyle’s. Even with that, Kyle did not snap out of his frenzy, only becoming more turned on. Under the shirt, Kyle tweaked Alex’s already pert nipples. His hands travel down and began to unbutton Alex’s pants.

Alex so wanted to take it further, but he did not want to take advantage of Kyle’s delirious happiness. He gently pulled Kyle’s hands away, and then pushed him to stand a distance away. Kyle’s eyes showed hurt. “Am I not attractive enough for you?”

Alex wanted to smack himself. He had to remember to be sensitive to Kyle’s extremely low self-esteem. “Don’t think that about yourself. You are so above me, and could do a lot better than me. That’s why I want to do whatever I can to make you happy. I want to sever any relationships with my former partners before we make love, and I want them to meet you so they know why.”

“Really?”

“Really, I want you to have my whole heart and soul before I give you my body.”

Kyle blushed at the image of him possessing Alex’s perfect body. Just then, Kyle realized he forgotten something. “With all the excitement, I forgot to tell you something.” Alex looked curious. “I love you too.”

Alex opened him arms, and Kyle hugged him. “I never doubted your feelings.”

****************************************************************************************************

The next day was spent dissolving connections with Alex’s former partners. Most of them were very understanding, hoping to someday find love with a single person as well. They took an instant liking to Kyle’s quiet persona. On Kyle’s part, he liked them too. He said that he had no problem with the idea of Alex keeping friendships with them.

There was only one who took it really bad, Steven. He went into a jealous rage when the couple went to talk to him at Anything Music. The rage was so vulgar and obnoxious that two co-workers who under him demanded that he leave before they called the police. Alex came so close to punching him after he insulted Kyle. The only thing that stopped Alex was Kyle gently holding him. Steven threatened Kyle, telling him that he would regret it. In return, Alex threatened that if he did anything to harm Kyle, Steven would be the one to regret it, even if Alex ended up going to prison.

When they were finally finished, they were walking in the park together when they came across a crowd gathered in a huddle. Out of curiosity, they pushed their way through, and saw police officers holding everyone back. They looked pass the officers and spotted two figures laying crumpled on the ground. One was immediately recognized as Steven, whom they had left about four hours earlier. It was automatically noted even from their distance that Steven was not breathing. The other person was hidden from their sight by two paramedics.

A voice called out, “Kyle,” albeit weakly. Kyle froze, knowing it was his twin brother. He tried to push pass the cops, who wouldn’t budge. Suddenly, one of the paramedics came over and told the officers to let him pass.

Alex and Kyle walked quickly over to the body. At the sight of his brother’s bloody stomach and the pain filled eyes, Kyle collapsed next to him. He looked back and forth between the dead Steven and Eric, intuitively knowing that somehow it was his fault that his brother was near death.

Alex turned to the officer that had stridden over. The officer explained what happened as it was told from Eric.

Flashback

Eric was lying down on the grass, thinking about Darren’s words. He truly did love his brother, so why couldn’t he just like Kyle go. Suddenly, and empty beer can bounced off his stomach. He looked up to see a very drunk man who was glaring murderously at him.

Using instinct, he knew that he better practice caution when dealing with this man.

The man was having trouble standing up. “I told you that you would regret it.” He said with a heavy slur.

Eric raised his eyebrows. “Do I know you?”

“Am I so unimportant that you forget me after an hour and a half Kyle?”

Eric’s thoughts registered that this guy was very angry at his brother for whatever reason, and would hurt him. “I…know who you are, but why are you so mad?”

Steven pulled out a hand gun. “Well, my darling…maybe it’s because, I don’t know, you stole my man!!!” He pointed the gun straight at Eric’s heart.

Eric leapt up and lunged to wrestle the gun out of Steven’s hand. One shot ran out, hitting Eric square in the shoulder. Another shot hit Steven in the chest, going through his ribs and puncturing his lungs due to the close range. He collapsed, and started to gasp for breath. Eric threw the gun to the side and also collapsed.

“If I’m going to die, I want to make sure you die with me you lousy mother-fucking home wreaker!!”
Still gasping for breath, Steven pulled out a second gun he had hidden and aimed it at Eric’s chest. He pulled the trigger, and in the nick of time, Kyle moved slightly. Instead of the bullet going through his heart, it went in his stomach. Before Steven could pull the trigger again, the gun was wrestled from his hand by an officer who had answered a distress call. A minute later Steven was dead while Eric was still fighting for his life.

End Flashback

Kyle had tears streaming down his cheeks by the end of the story. He took a deep breath. “Why didn’t you just tell him that you were my twin?”

Eric smiled wryly. “That’s the oldest excuse in the book. Do you think he would really have believed that? Besides, I knew he would come after you. If I was going to die, I wanted to make sure you were safe from him.”

Kyle shook his head. “Don’t be silly. You’re not going to die.”

Eric reached for Kyle’s hand. “Are you trying to reassure me or yourself? I’m okay with dying. I deserve it after everything I put you through.” Eric started to breath heavier. He was losing blood quickly and knew his time was short. “Before I go, I want just want you to know how sorry I am, and tell you that I do love you. I hope you find happiness with Alex. He’s...good...for...you.” He gave Kyle’s hand a gentle squeeze before his eyes fluttered close for the final time.

Kyle attempted to shake him away. “Stop joking! Wake up!” Alex laid a hand gently on Kyle’s shoulder, but it was pushed away. Kyle looked at the lifeless body of his twin brother, and let out a heart wrenching scream as bystanders cried softly for the brothers.

AN: This was actually a hard chapter for me to write. I always have trouble killing off my characters, no matter how many bad things they do. What's worse is that I came to sympathize with Eric a little bit, as if he was a real person. I know it sounds kooky. Please R&R.
